Problems With MH A380s?

Fri May 24, 2013 7:35 am

Anyone know if there are any problems with MH A380s recently? I flew MH 0073 on 23 MAY and it operated 4 hrs late. Flight was operated by 9M-MNE and I noticed all four engines had white nacelles instead of the white/blue/silver nacelles it was delivered with. MH 0072/0073 today is operating 3 hrs late.

Are you sure about the white nacelles? Are there any pictures available?

Yes, I have a picture on my smart phone. I sat upperdeck in biz.

It's perhaps because the white/blue/silver stripes are only on the outside of the engines, the inner side is white.

that explains it for 9M-MNE but 9M-MND has coloring on both sides now as I flew that one last week. Can anyone comment on the multiple delays?

Ah, you were on that flight. The blue stripes on the nacelles are not visible from the inside of the aircraft.

Ok, that is new to me. I've checked and you're right:

No idea why.

Seems like 9M-MND is the only one with painted nacelles on the inside. Funny. But I don't think this means there is something wrong with MH A380s.

Since the first one I flew on was MND and used that as a frame of reference, I assumed that MNE had all four engines changed or something. I was booked on MH 0073 on 23 MAY and received notification from MAS of the delay the morning of 22 MAY, so they knew something major was up. Then, when I boarded MNE and noticed white nacelles instead of blue and white ones, I assume something major caused the delay.

Make sense now?

Wasn't MND the one that was rumored to be getting the oneWorld titles? Maybe that's why it has the nacelles painted on the inside.

More than likely a delayed service ex-LHR or CDG resulting in a roll on delay ex-KUL-HKG.

Yes it was. MND was delivered without the blue stripes in November last year and was re-painted in March 2013:

I checked and both of those were operating on time the day before and arrived on time the morning of 23 MAY. That was my first thought. And it doesn't help that today's MH 72/73 is also delayed 3+ hours.

Nothing spectacular shows up but if you're curious:

MH73/23May shows a delay with 9M-MNE requiring more time to rectify an engine exhaust gas temperature indication.

MH72/24May shows a delay with 9M-MND requiring more time for a heavy turbulence check.
I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences.

Just another day in aviation. Remarkable how little it takes for someone to assume all the wrong conclusions, especially when it's based entirely on observations of nacelle decals, or the lack thereof ....

Dude, there's around 100 A380s operating, it's almost a certainty one of them is going to throw a wobbly on any given day. Now imagine how many 737s or 320s are going temporarily tits up for reasons various, mostly non-serious, every hour of the day. Going to start a thread on that too?

Is the engine changed as an entire pod? In most cases the cowling is opened, engine exchanged, cowling closed again. Same cowl.

MH73/24 May (ex HKG) has been delayed almost 24 hours to 11am 25/May local time (+8) due to AOG issues

I actually watched MH 72 land yesterday and was in full colours.

Here's a video I took of the landing:

But when you only have 6 and you have 3 major delays in three days...hmmm
