Nippon Cargo 747-8F In Whitehorse (YXY)

Fri May 24, 2013 10:52 pm

A Nippon Cargo 747-8F en route from JFK to ANC diverted to Whitehorse (YXY), capital of Canada's Yukon Territory, on Thursday morning due ot an apparently false fire warning in the cargo hold. It's still there today, waiting for a maintenance check by someone from ANC. A couple of photos in the following news items, and video in the first link.

It's probably the first 747 to land at YXY (population about 23,000) since 2 KE 744s (one passenger, one cargo) diverted to YXY on 9/11.

News reports pretty much covers it. Big deal around here as the airport doesn't see anything this big very often. Take off was surprisingly short, I was expecting it to be longer, having never seen it done here before. Nice to see such a new aircraft in person and the thing that impressed me the most was how quiet it was, the hawker just before was deafening in comparison.

My feeble attempt at capturing the event is here:

I suspect that some light replacements may be necessary, and it appeared that some of the patching on the runway was displaced. Lots of photographers out to see, perhaps a nice photo will be uploaded sometime.

Nice video GMPEC. Is there a lot of gravel around the runwa? A lot of loose dirt around it to create the dust?

How long was it on the ground?

I guess they did not fly very far from there. And the 748 is powerful

We are just getting into spring and it's been quite dry, grass hasn't really begun to green up. The soil is very sandy and dry.

Looks to me like it only took about 4000' or so to get up.

It's initial destination was Anchorage, which is only 1 hour flight time from here and they only put a small amount of fuel in before it left, so I suspect it was relatively light and a lot of power was used. The strip is one you don't want to be short or long on with ravines on either end.

I meant how many hours the ground time was between the landing and the take off again

Yeah, sounds about right.

Right. Landed at about 7:30 am Thursday and left about 7:25 pm last night. It was expected to leave late Thursday night or early Friday morning, but it took a bit longer than expected to get people over from Anchorage, fortunately for us.
