Watch Your Favorite Airport's Expansion 1984-2012

Sat May 25, 2013 4:25 pm

There's a neat google tool that does time lapse high altitude (or satellite?) imagery over the period 1984-2012 that I used to look at how airports have changed during that time. EWR is an interesting one to look at!

Wow.. neat. Changi and Singapore in general changed so visibly since we keep reclaiming land from the sea!
The whole chunk of land beyond Changi Airport didn't exist in 1984.

Not much change for my hometown Halifax - YHZ, but growth at YYZ is quite a show!!!!

Finally a Google product that shows the new runway at FRA. I check Google Earth every now and then to see if it's up to date on FRA's changes but it's about a 10 year old image. This time lapse lacks a little detail but it's pretty good nonetheless.

I checked it out. For an airport of its size, FWA has seen a lot since 1984.

What stood out to me were:
-The extension of Runway 5/23 to the southwest and 11,981 ft, along with new taxiways
-The former Kitty Hawk hub, now known as the Air Trade Center and home to FedEx and other companies, at the southwest end of 5/23
-The extension of Runway 14/32 to the northwest, bringing it to 8,001 ft
-Runway 9/27 turning from a general runway into a narrower, shorter general aviation runway that is 4,001 ft
-The terminal expansion in 1994-97
-The closure of the airport Days Inn and conversion into a parking lot
-The expansion of the Air National Guard base

MIA will be something to see tons of changes since 1984. And the city of Miami would be even more interesting. I've seen google earth since 1995 but never 1984.

ABE is too small to really see much change in those images. But, still, a cool feature. I'll have to look at some other things.

I actually see more changes at SCE than at ABE... along with the building of US-322 W out to I-80 and the development of Innovation Park. Definitely cool to see this stuff.

SDF and MEM are quite interesting thanks to UPS and FDX. DEN of course, both airports! IAH and MSP grew alot.

IAH is pretty good to watch! Not only because of the airport, but because of the whole northern part of greater Houston! Especially Atascocita!
Not every day we find light winds. What do we do in these situations? Fly.

Stapleton reminded me of SimCity when a fire ravages the city. It is swallowed up and looks like it was never there. CVG was also a surprisingly dramatic change in runways. Maybe they should build an air force base there so that money doesn't go to waste.

It wouldn't let me zoom in enough on IND to see what I really wanted to see, which is how what is now the Fed Ex hub changes over time. But it was interesting to see how the runway configurations have changed there.

The city itself is crazy to watch on it. Where my house is was just a desert mountain slope in 1984 miles away from the city. I didn't zoom in too close on LAS but it looks like the runway configuration really hasn't changed much (added the second parallel runway closest to Sunset Road but that's about it on that) but of course Concourse D and Terminal 3 have both been built and I believe concourse C has been added onto.

ATL will probably be the next one I look at, that should be crazy how it went from a mid sized southern airport to the worlds busiest so quickly.

Very cool sight.

The new DEN (DIA) is fun to watch grow from nothing.
