Will QR To Upgrade VIE Or Other Euro Destinations?

Mon May 27, 2013 6:50 am

Ever since Qatar Airways opened Vienna, it has been flying daily A320 fights. I wonder why they do not upgrade the aircraft to at least an A330 since they also fly cargo? Instead of A320 + cargo they could fly A330 and carry cargo in the belly. It seems to me VIE is a major city in Europe and it deserves an A330.

A lot of other destinations in Europe are A320's. Any chance of seeing them upgraded?

QR has the perfect strategy, open up new markets with a low capacity aircraft to see if loads would justify up-gauging. I imagine if VIE isn't an A330 by now they don't think the market can support it.

On a side note, last week, QR's BRU flights have frequently been downgauged from the regular A330 to an A319LR.

It's a significant differential in terms of seat numbers.

I'm not too sure that QR's loads are that good out of BRU when it's not holidays period...

Its partly due to lack of aircraft. The airline has been hit in a big way by the 787 delays and the delay of the new airport.

Do you know how many 787s should QR have by the end of this year?

Being a major city and capital doesn't mean flights are doing well or bad, if it was doing that well, i'm sure it would be a A330 by now.
Route probably suffers stiff competition from EK, LH, OS, LX.

Just a small correction: Vienna was not "always" operated with an A320. In 2003/2004 the flight was an A300, operating DOH-MUC-VIE vv.

Yeah, I know the operational problems QR is encountering due to this huge delay ! But since the 787 were just re-entering service, I was a bit puzzled to witness such a downgauge. Now if they can afford an A330-A319 swap, it sure means that the loads aren't that high for QR in BRU at the moment.

10 787s by year end. Expect to see massive expansion in 2014 if all things go as planned. 380 to enter service beginning next year followed closely by 350. And all this while the new airport opens. Vienna has been 320 for a while now, the only surprise is BRU on a 319, is it a one-off thing or is it going to be standard equipment? Seychelles is also stopping, however, that's because of high operating costs at the airport.

I think QR is still in its infancy in some regards. I recall reading on A.net whilst current expansion is still impressive, due to constraints at their current airport, they have yet to truly be able to rationalise their connection banks and leverage the benefits of EAST-WEST, WEST-EAST connection waves ala EK.

Perhaps with the 787 delays sorted and the fleet growing, a rehash of the timetable as they move into the new airport, ports across the network will be upgraded, if not directly including VIE, at least improving loads and flowing onto narrow-body mid-haul ports that maybe borderline for an up-gauge. I am sure QR would like to upgrade to a wide-body to offer a more premium experience, especially in business class, helping to increase their yields.

Has there been any reports of yield depression due to the product offered in J on the A320s on mid-haul routes?

What is the exact delivery dates? Any news on routes and cabin configuration, (LHR as one I presume)? Are QR still planning on phasing out first, or will it at least feature on the A380?

What is the planned date by which QR will move into the new airport? I can't image them being able to handle an A380 at the old airport!

QR started BEG like 6 months ago, flying A320. Now the default equipment became the A321.

Delivery dates are not confirmed because the 380 delivery will only happen when the new airport is in operation and no date has been set for the opening of the airport.

As far as I know first is being phased out slowly. First was really only used by the Qatari Royal Family and so I think that there will be some pressure for QR to maintain a few aircraft with the F product for their use.

It seems that QR is still growing nicely, just not as fast as the 2 UAE rivals.

I thought QR was already and continuing to rapidly increase its lead over EY? Obviously they have a lot of catching up to do with EK (although I am not sure they want the same scale), but I felt they were well ahead of EY.

Probably one of the reasons why Vienna is still served by A320 is because QR also has flights to many of the cities Vienna would traditionally have been used as a hub to get to. Budapest, Zagreb and Belgrade for example.

Interestingly, these three cities are regularly upgraded to A321 service.
Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you long to return
