FRA Worst Airport For Delays And Cancellations

Thu May 30, 2013 12:42 pm

According to a research carried out by a service provider which helps passengers to claim monetary compensation for flight delays and cancellations, passengers are more likely to suffer delays and cancellations at Frankfurt airport than at any other airport in the World.

Tokyo is the world's most on-time airport with 92 per cent of flights operating with no more than a 15 minute delay, followed by Munich (90 per cent) and Seattle (87 per cent).

I'm a little surprised by this, since LH seems to be a good performer in the field of delays/cancellations, and FRA is the main hub of LH. What is causing all this delays and cancellations at FRA ??

Doesn't sound like a very reliable way of survey sampling, using an app to encourage people to claim compensation. This indicates that LGW and MAN were ahead of LHR in delays. Maybe pax 'types' at charter/locost airports are more likely to make a claim than those that use LHR?

Also it seems biased towards German airports with FRA and DUS high on the list. Maybe travellers from there were 'promped' to make claims more than other airports.

Maybe also they were under impression of a lot of cancellations in FRA due to quite a few different kind of strikes within the last year there...

These two paragraphs probably offer the explanation.

The research was carried out by Refund.me, a service provider which helps passengers claim their right to monetary compensation for flight delays, cancellations, diversions and missed connections.

Refund.me revealed the list of airports after analysing data from users of its online widget and mobile app who had suffered the most inconveniences eligible for compensation.>

It just means that THEIR customers who are probably for some reason mostly from Germany suffer from delays at... surprise, surprise German airports. Frankly I would not trust one bit these "researches" because the methodology is always very dubious and primary goal is for a travel-related business to get its name into the news and get a free advertisement
There has been a similar "research" carried out by a local online ticket agency which "revealed" that tickets from PRG are the 4th most expensive in Europe in terms of price per 1km of flight (whatever relevance that has).
The article is in Czech but if you simply look at the list http://www.zkracovatko.cz/DdHt5r you will see they are comparing apples and oranges. Unfortunately even journalists in the "serious" media here are so clueless when it comes to aviation and so sensationalist at the same time that they took it at a face value. This botched "research" which was a mere PR release in disguise has been presented as a rock solid fact with bombastic headlines in most local news outlets.

I guess these poor numbers are not quite good. Well, there have been many, MANY cancellations due so the strikes, which of course ruins the statistics.

FRA is by far not the best airport, but I wouldn't say it is the worst.

I agree the method and the hidden interest of the researcher are an important factor, but if you have good performance those factors should be less important.

Probably this is the most realistic analysis, some sort of point of balance between the infamous statistics and the reality.

Don't worry, I find FRA very entertaining and fun to connect in!

Cheers.

That is a good way to express it

I am flying quite often out of FRA and we usually are pretty much on time. I don't have much delay. Couple of minutes sometimes, but my personal statistic is not representative for the whole airport.

I once made it from Thai 747 via immigration to baggage claim and the ICE train station in 25 minutes. I was astonished to see how long you walk. Transferring is certainly not better.
