New Runway In Fra?

Thu Oct 26, 2000 2:42 am

Recently there was an article in the German magazine "Focus", that the Frankfurt Airport Company and the government of the state Hessen did make a contract to force the construction of a new runway at FRA. It´s called the North-West Solution, a runway, just for landings, shorter than the existing ones, placed in the north-west of the LH-base.
Maybe anyone of you know more about this?
Thanks for your help

Over The Highway

Thu Oct 26, 2000 3:37 am

Back in 1998, I had heard about a runway on the other side of the highway (which is located at the North of the existing airport facilities).
The runway would cross the highway (like at CDG) and the additional terminal would be built on the other side of the runway as well.

Anyone confirming please?

Best regards,

FRA needs a new runway! But where the runway takes place...nobody knows.
There are also different opinions in the government, if FRA needs really a new runway.
Also the US Air Force leaves FRA in the next 5 years. Then FRA have new space to expand (a new passengerterminal?)

It's still gonna take a while until there'll be a "good" decision.

The projected runway shall be constructed about less than 2 miles from my home.

The rwy will be 2800 X 45 Meter. if the Northwest option is taken.
It is however not 100% final that it will be the so called North-west solution. Here in Germany and though it is a free market environment, the social aspect is far more than in many other countries. People living in the neighborhood are against this expansition.

What has been pushed through (finally!) is the fact that there will be a RWY bulit and completed by the year 2006.
The other option (which i consider better and less expensive) is the south east rwy near the village of
Zeppelinheim. This option will cause the moving of about 2000 people however it is still less likely to be done than going into debates with the rich and famous people of Frankfurt, a lot of whom lives in the are of Sachsenhausen (south of the city), the north-west option will mean that the flightpath will be directly above Sachsenhausen!

it is a pitty to see how much it takes to expand the airport while at the same time Amsterdam gets it's fifth rwy approved!

Hello Amir,

thanks for the help.

What you mentioned about the other option: Do you mean another 07/25 rwy, south of the US-Base? Then, I think, they´ll close 18, but you would have space(near Cargo City South) for another terminal: wouldn´t be bad!! but what´s do you think? Could and/or would they still use 18 with 3 rwys 07/25? I think, it should be possible. See crossing rwys in HAM or Zurich or even JFK.

Why do you say it is a pity it takes so long to decide ?

An expanding FRA means business and money for the region, but it means also environmental concerns for the people living near by...And if you just find out that wealthy people (Sachenshausen) are more powerful than others...Well that is a sad fact of life...

You might be happy to see the new runway close to your home, but I am sure 99% that your neighbours will be against...Also, if you own your house, you'll have the displeasure of seeing its market value going down pretty quickly soon if you are that close to FRA...

As a sidenote, Nice is quoted as a dangerous airport because of its final approach...Do you know why ? Because the overwhemingly weathly people of the Riviera can not stand to see jet over their mansions...Therefore new arrival path are periodically redesigned despites the safety concerns one might have....
