Pinnacle Airlines Changing Name To Endeavor Air

Fri May 31, 2013 9:46 pm

No official press release yet but according to employees it will be rebranded with a company vote for the logo and it will be called Endeavor Air. Seems pretty cool to me

Sorry for the stupid question, but what is the point of rebranding an airline that does not operate flights under its own brand?

That's a very good question, let me try to address it the best I can.

Just like any other public company, this one has a customer base it must please.

Now, while they do not go to market as Pinnacle, they do have customers that recognize them under this brand, i.e. the major carriers who's flag they operate under. In the past, Pinnacle has been associated with carriers like Cogan who had a very messy accident and Pinnacle themselves has just gone through bankruptcy.

Just like most other companies who emerge from bankruptcy, they are trying to change the record so to speak.

As you note, they don't have a TON of public name power for many reasons including the fact that they typically don't go to market under their own name.

For all these reasons and more, some companies who emerge from bankruptcy change their name to help them change.

Does that help at all?

Thanks for the explanation. Maybe I am too naive, but I would expect that because of the customers they deal with - the handful of US legacy carriers that know the market inside out - any renaming exercise is more or less pointless.

Why not resurrect the Delta Express name? After all, most airlines use "Express" branding to refer to their regional affiliates or subsidiaries. DL was the lone exception, who used the Delta Express name for a low-cost subsidiary (which was eventually replaced by Song).

Because that just creates headaches later if/when Delta ever wants to get rid of them.

My matchsticks were on 9E taking the Mesaba name.

It is curious that a company comin out of bankruptcy would take on the unnecessary cost of renaming itself. I guess if Delta is picking up the tab now it really doesn't matter.

Cheers!

Endeavor Air? Really? Not a huge fan of that. I hope they keep Flagship as their call sign at least.

And when you think "Pinnacle" and "crash" together, there's one particular flight with no passengers that comes to mind...

I like the name. Endeavor was my favorite shuttle after Atlantis. Just a cool word.

What a waste of money. Hopefully this goes the way of Surejet.

After the debacle of renaming ASA/ExpressJet to SureJet happened and they rescinded the name after bad feedback. The company put up a vote online for employees with four choices. 2 being the original names Atlantic Southeast or ExpressJet and 2 new ones. Endeavor was one of the new ones to choose...

I thought superior airways would be good because Lake Superior connects the two states with the biggest pinnacle/Mesaba bases.

Ugh. I can't believe I did that. I knew it was spelled that way but probably got caught up because of the way Pinnacle is spelling it.

I don't think you are being naive at all. You are absolutely correct, changing your name does not erase your history. Pinnacle will always be remembered just as Airtran is remembered for being Valuejet. The only way for Pinnacle to escape their history will be for them to be merged into another airline.

As a wholly owned it is doubtful that their parent will forget who and what they are. Also doubtful they will have to be concerned about "other customers". In my opinion if they change their name it will be done in an attempt to create a new beginning for their employees. I also think the effort will fall flat, just another lame corporate attempt to manipulate culture with smoke & mirrors instead of any meaningful change.

How many people, even on this website, remember that Pinnacle was originally known as Express Airlines I, and flew under that name longer than they flew under the Pinnacle name?

Idiotic name. To me it connotes, "We're really trying, even though we still suck."

In a business in which trying hard isn't good enough -- where it has to be done right every time or people die.

"We're gonna try real hard to get you there safely!!"

Yikes. Good thing they aren't painting that name on any actual aircraft.

Or, given that these are the guys who brought you Club 41, "we're gonna try to get to the service ceiling!!"

And Delta (or any airline really) could not care less what Pinnacle is called or what their history is, especially since they are now a wholly owned subsidiary.

If DL were to sell Pinnacle in the future, the name Endeavour might be a more attractive name to potential investors than Pinnacle.

so the question remains: what's the point of renaming?

an attempt to improve employee morale? I'm sure they're thrilled.

So they'd be Delta Express flying under the Delta Connection banner? That sounds redundant and silly

No, what I meant was that DL was the only U.S. airline who used the word "Express" for something other than a regional subsidiary or affiliate.

Western Air Express (the original namesake of TWA (Transcontinental + Western Air Express))
Business Express
Chicago Express (flew for ATA out of MDW)

and I am sure there are a few more.

I agree with others about the waste of money. Put that money in the bank, or use some of it to treat the employees to a bonus. Rebranding is fine, but changing the name is a costly mistake IMO.

Different name... Has "express" in it...  stirthepot   stirthepot
