Great news to see EY expanding, congrats to them. Be great to see another flight down to MEL at some point!

How is AUH handling all the expansion, are they keeping up too?

dont know what the reason for this is but from 01JUL, the new GRU route is already being reduced from daily A340 to 3 weekly only until the end of the S13 season i.e. till late OCT. This does not sound good...can somebody please elaborate further on this.

I think EY scheduling is definitely very tight with its current fleet. Especially on the ultra long-haul.

They certainly adapted the frequencies to the loads forecasts.

Is EY keeping their 345s? I think if they are intending on keeping them, they should pick up the ones that are sitting on the used aircraft market, often with low cycles and keep them for routes like this epic journey. If EY is not keeping the 345, then what will be operating routes like this with?

Surprised EY not using their 77W metal on this route. Any possible reason? or they have shortage of type to utilize?

You are right it’s because of the shortage
All the 2 class 77W are used on Asian routes BKK,MNL,KUL
And the newer 77W witch have 3 class are used on LHR,SYD & just recently NYC

AUH is keeping up as it’s currently went into expanding its current facility as an interim solution till the new midfield terminal opens late 2017.

The latest project which will open early 2014 is adding 20 more departure gates to terminal 3 (Etihad terminal) and adding a new business class lounge to accommodate the expansions of Etihad increasing pax numbers and its alliance airlines guests.

FYI, QR couldn't even fill 65% of a 260 seater B77L daily to GRU in 2012 even with a tag on to EZE. Etihad has a smaller network + fewer number of flights to SE Asia, Indian subcontinent and GCC versus QR hence it should not even consider sending a B77W to GRU under any circumstances.

For the route to be downgraded from the on set from daily to 3 weekly highlights that there is overcapacity existing in the market place and this in turn reflects on the low advanced bookings hence the frequency reduction.

Your 100% right that’s way Etihad downgrade the A/C from A346 to A345 and recently the frq to 3 times a week. Smart move by them

I really doubt EK or QR are making money to GRU right now. It's so far and the fares are very competitive to the major volume destinations.

I was surprised from the beginning that they got such good daily slots. Good it be that they loaded daily hoping to get the slots but were only granted 3 so they had to cut back?

Frequency reduced is a matter of GRU available slots, not because low bookings. Better slots will be ready by end of the year.

Great for Ethihad and Great for Sao Paulo, it now has all 3 Middle East airlines and Miami has none. I hope the Brazil is able to exploit new export markest in thet part of the world. When TAM joins OneWorld will it fly to Doha ? Interesting times we live in.

Yes, I understand that N854GT is operating this cargo routing but this aircraft is wearing the Atlas Air livery to my knowledge, is that correct? I'm waiting on their EY livery on the 747-8F  Do you know when this will be done?

It's an Atlas 747-8 painted in full EY livery operating MIA-VCP-UIO-AMS-AUH-HKG-ORD-MIA.

What is the fleet break down between the two types? Are EY due to receive anymore two class 77W or are they all there class from now on?

I would have thought however it would have been a very high yielding freight route, especially for meat!

Low demand probably. As you said QR is not performing that well and TK will use the A343 instead of the planned B77W as well as is selling Y fares GRU-EZE-GRU for as low as USD 139

And they realize such problem just a week before the first flight ?
Why they sold tickets for daily flights ? Just bad planning ?

I believe it is excessive. Etihad will probably need to add a tag. I can't believe they all (plus TK) can fill their planes during week days.
And not to forget, Ethiopian soon will add GIG and GRU to their network... less potential demand for Africa.
New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

I heard from someone working in QR's offices that they do quite well in Brazil. Now, I always keep that in perspective: Doing well is quite different from making money. On a relative basis it is probably a good route.

I can't help having the impression that TK is a house made of a deck of cards. Even US to Turkey had fares not too far from GRU-EZE. They have so much product on the shelf, they might as well give it for free.

What's the bilateral between Brazil and U.A.E. like?
Two airlines from U.A.E. flying 3 times per day (EK GRU, EK GIG-EZE, EY GRU) to Brazil.
Isn't usually one airline from each country or there's an open skies between Brazil and U.A.E.?
Would it come the time EK and EK will fight to see one of the two gone?
I'm not on CM's payroll.

I realize GRU is one of the largest cities in LatAm but EY should have gone to another city first instead becoming a "me too" at GRU. Perhaps they should have tried BOG, CCS or LIM first. The CCS yields should be stellar. Even something like PTY would have allowed them to be out front.

Probably bi-laterals, and they don't fly to the same city.

just one example if air panama decided to serve brazil to "compete" with CM I'm sure the gov would let them. (once again just an example).

None of these other cities comes close to SAO in wealth and ability to generate traffic, premium, and overall. GRU is a top-20 metro area in the world. One can add the economies around SCL, BOG, CCS and LIM together, and it is still not as big as Sao Paulo.
