OAG Changes 6/7/2013: AA/DL/UA

Mon Jun 03, 2013 8:39 pm

INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: It appears that something changed recently and now we are seeing flights that are not available for sale such as scheduled charters. It does not appear there is any way to detect them as of now. They will now appear when they change.

What is with Silver? I know that they use the WP code but are really 3M. Is this a change now that they are hosted in Sabre or are they really dropping of of the ATL flights?

This would be the end of service to Nome--currently flown as Anchorage-Kotzebue-Nome.

Continental had flown CLE-AUS/SAT in the past, though I don't have details of when handy.

Incorrect, I see AS152 flown ANC-OME, in addition to AS151 & AS153 flown ANC-OTZ-OME.

I don't remember a CLE-AUS, but I know CLE-SAT was an ERJ, which strikes me as misery. Glad the AUS flight will be a CR7, at least you've got options like E+ and F.

CLE-AUS was a 735, according to the November-December 2000 CO timetable. Flight 1897 737-500 CLE-AUS.

What is with Silver? I know that they use the WP code but are really 3M. Is this a change now that they are hosted in Sabre or are they really dropping of of the ATL flights?

I believe what we're seeing here on Silver is them ending their UA* code sharing and no longer piggybacking on WP. A different recent a.net thread talks about this. Whatever they fly as (3M perhaps?) will perhaps show up here in future weeks.

I'm not aware of any substantial flying changes at Silver, and I believe the Florida flying will still be available for code-share connections with United (EYW-TPA-IAH). But it won't be for sale as a stand-alone United flight, similar to how Great Lakes operates in a market like PUB-DEN. You can fly PUB-ORD on a UA ticket with ZK operating PUB-DEN, but if you want a PUB-DEN stand-alone ticket it's Great Lakes only.

This would be the end of service to Nome--currently flown as Anchorage-Kotzebue-Nome.

Does AS reduce frequencies every year after the Summer to places like Nome and Kotzebue? This seems normal to me, just like the SEA-Sitka non-stop is Summer only. AS SEA-SIT SEP 0.3>0.1

It doesn't seem like this change is anything but a normal seasonal frequency revision.

I don't think this means the end of service to Nome; AS has two daily flights into OME and OTZ, and they are flown as triangles ANC-OTZ-OME-ANC or ANC-OME-OTZ-ANC. Given that neither ANC-OTZ nor ANC-OME showed up on the report as discontinued, this change must indicate the de-linking of OTZ and OME on one or both of these triangles.

Yes, it is crazy. It is all about having good times for connections. I mean given the state of MKE. UA is battling the same system with DL on the connection traffic. DL is split between MSP and DTW, so they route the east through DTW and west MSP. UA's best routing it taking all that traffic through ORD. Hence, they need more to one city. I just looked up DL, for today (Wednesday June 19th) DL has 6 non-stops to MSP and 7 to DTW from MKE. So a total of 13, which is more than UA. UA has little more than a token presence to the other hubs at MKE (ORDx9, EWR x3, IAHx3, CLEx5, DENx2, SFOx0, IADx0. LAXx0)

The UA Florida market cuts on Silver Air are due to the dropping of the Express handle. Some of these flights are converting to Silver Airlines own marketing. And not United's marketing. I can't remember if they will codeshare (interline) anymore, but these are no longer being marketed by United but by Silver.

DL operated 6x per day during the spring months. This summer DL will operate 5x per day (4x M88 + 1x 319). This fall, DL will operate 6x per day however all on A319s. Capacity-wise it is only about a 30 seat per day difference.

That being said, LGA-MIA is one of those routes with nearly infinite demand. Its safe place of DL to utilize LGA slots when demand in other routes drops off during slower periods of the year.

The drop in DTW capacity is pretty typical with normal fall capacity reductiond.

PIT-LGA is going from 6x (3x CR7, 2x E75, 1x M88) this summer to 7x (6x CR7, 1x E75) in the fall. Going to about 30 seats/day less than during the summer, but on more frequency as they pull the mainline flight.

Thanks. That seems like a lot of capacity on that route.

Great Smoky Mountains tourism is almost entirely a drive-market phenomenon, and there's not much of a market for it from the upper Midwest or other markets served by MSP.

Yes, it is crazy. It is all about having good times for connections. I mean given the state of MKE. UA is battling the same system with DL on the connection traffic. I don't think it is crazy there is demand there for all these non stops. Right now most of our ORD-MKE flights go out almost if not completely full so UA is catering to demand by increasing service. It use to be some years ago UA only had 4 or 5 flights a day to MKE and if you were connecting to a MKE flight from ORD you had to sit in the airport for 3-5 hours just waiting for your connecting flight home. Now days people do not want to wait that long. Also another reason why UA is increasing the number of non stops to MKE is because it is more convenient than driving and although it was said the drive is just an hour sometimes it can be a little be longer than depending on the time of day you are traveling and if you are coming to ORD in rush hour traffic then it takes a little bit more than a hour to get from MKE to ORD. So although it may seem like its overkill it really isn't. Milwaukee is a medium size city there are a lot of people living in the Milwaukee area and not everyone wishes to drive to ORD so I think that both UA and DL are fulfilling a need. I think the odd ball here is AA with 4 flights a day. With only 4 flights a day depending on when you arrive at ORD it probably would be quicker for you to drive to Milwaukee than sit at ORD for hours waiting for your connecting flight to MKE. And finally this might sound unbelievable but it is true UA does get a lot of bags from AA for our flights to MKE and vise versa we send a lot of bags to AA off our inbound flights from MKE so I think AA needs to increase their number of non stops because 4 flights a day is not enough.

PIT-LGA is going from 6x (3x CR7, 2x E75, 1x M88) this summer to 7x (6x CR7, 1x E75) in the fall. Going to about 30 seats/day less than during the summer, but on more frequency as they pull the mainline flight.

A couple of thoughts about LGA-PIT: It's a good place to park LGA slots since it doesn't use up much aircraft time and there's reasonable demand between the two markets. Also, I have to wonder if DL is trying to nudge US out of PIT-LGA -- one of the last point-to-point routes in the US system. DL offers two-class equipment on all flights while all but one of the US flights are on CR2's.

How many seats can this market sustain? What types are being used, is it all regional or a mix?
DL is going to what is essentially similar to the LGA shuttle, going to operate all E75s on the route.

So who blinks first on LAX-SFO?

The UA Florida market cuts on Silver Air are due to the dropping of the Express handle. Some of these flights are converting to Silver Airlines own marketing. And not United's marketing. I can't remember if they will codeshare (interline) anymore, but these are no longer being marketed by United but by Silver.

I believe this has to do with the new UA pilots contract which puts a hard cap on the number of regional aircraft that can operate under UAX.

Is it just me or does anyone else think this is kind of overkill? Are people really that lazy that they can't just drive an hour? AA only flies it 4x daily.

If they can fill the planes and make a profit then it's not over kill. I'm always jealous when I look at the UA options out of MKE into ORD for connections compared to those at AA. AA is the laggard here and I've heard several friends have chosen not to fly on AA because of limited connection options into ORD and longer connection times as a result of the infrequent service. Heck - AA has more flights to DFW now than ORD.

FYI - it's more than an hour drive to ORD from MKE - at least an hour and a half with door to door drop off if you're lucky enough to have a friend that's willing to spend 4 hours driving you back and forth to ORD and you're not driving yourself. Then you have to deal with the wonderful construction on I-94 S and N in Wisconsin, the FIB traffic, tolls, and extra time and the outrageous daily parking fees at ORD. Round trip on the bus is about $60 per person but takes even longer than an hour and a half due to several stops. Of course that all assumes you're starting at MKE - and you're not taking into account that may people are routinely driving at least 30-60 minutes from points north and west to get to MKE in the first place.

ORD may be more of a practical option for those who live South of MKE but for those who don't you're talking at least a 4-5 hour process before boarding your flight on good day for most people.

All well and good, but I'll continue buying a second *safety* ticket on AC or AS just to be sure I don't get stranded over the Thanksgiving holidays.
