Back in the '70s, we flew show horses (and others) from ATL
to the west coast (scheduled ATL
) on the L382 (commercial version of the Lockheed C-130). Had several trips with 4-5 horses and their caretakers whose destination was SFO
On the last trip, the horses started acting up; trying to get out of their enclosed area, and rearing up and down even though they had been partially tranquilized.. They actually shook the aircraft like we were in light to moderated chop.
Several of them injured their shins so we checked with flight control and bypassed LAX
and went directly to SFO
. No major injuries and we (the crew) added on about 4 hours to our scheduled 34 hour layover in the city by the bay.
