Southern Airways Express Update

Fri Jun 07, 2013 3:00 am

https://www.iflysouthern.com

Website is up and running. I must say it's a nice looking website.

First flights start next week it looks like.

I always root for the underdog and I hope these guys are successfully able to find a niche.

(and as a resident of New Orleans, it's pretty interesting to see commercial air service restored to KNEW for the first time since 1946)

I wonder how Norfolk Southern likes them using the old Southern Railway slogan "Southern Serves the South"?

Sounds like a neat operation. I wish them well!

According to their FAQ page...
"Southern Airways Express has a fleet of Cessna 208 Caravans and 208B Grand Caravans" and it looks like they are a FBO so no TSA shenanigans.
I'm leavin on a jet plane. Don't know when I'll be back again....

Is the Pilatus a high cost airplane. Cessna 208 explains how they can carry 9 pax plus golf clubs.

Good luck to them. The Birmingham - Beach routes, at $129, are all quite drivable.

Anybody else notice that the online timetable seems to have changed? I could swear at some point in the last 36 hours or so the schedule showed more flights, including the Memphis-New Orleans flights. The current schedule is just the flights from Memphis, Olive Branch and Oxford Destin / Panama City and Gulf Shores, with between 1 and 4 flights per week in each market.

I give them credit for trying something different, but this definitely flies in the face of a lot of conventional wisdom. Memphis-Destin is about 2:15 flying time versus about 7:45 driving, so there's time savings. But is it enough time savings to offset the inconvenience of having to confirm to the airline's a-few-flights-per-week schedule, and also to offset the cost of renting a car?

it will be interesting to see how things go...

The are using an SA prefix (does the term IATA code apply to this operation?) for their flights. I wonder what South African Airways thinks about that?

Interesting. I've always thought there might be money to be made, flying routes from Tennessee and northern MS/AL/GA to the Gulf Coast. Lots of people drive those routes, but it's pretty much a full day's drive, and a lot of it is on secondary roads.

Well it is either with their blessing or NS let it expire and have no claim to it now.

In the FAQ section about their aircraft:

"Southern Airways Express has a fleet of Cessna 208 Caravans and 208B Grand Caravans. All aircraft are outfitted with nine luxury leather passenger seats, an iPad and Bose headset for each passenger, and space in the cabin for one personal item, such as a briefcase of purse. The planes are powered by 675-horsepower PT-6 turbojet engines, one of the most reliable engines in service throughout the world."

I wonder if those turbojet engines smoke like a P & W JT3C?

Just how many 208's do they have right now??

There are two C208s that have been flying out of OLV to the destinations of Southern so must be for them. They are listed as owned by JA Flight Services and/or BA Jacobs Flight Services (I assume same entity).

Nothing in the FAA database for Southern Airways Corporation or Southern Airways Express.

I do as well. I'm very excited about this. I'm certainly going to use them whenever I get a chance.

Pretty sure the scheduled NOLA and B'Ham flights start the last week in June.

Yeah, to avoid any copyright infringement they should probably use another slogan, and I can help here - "Southern Gives a Green Light to Innovation."
