Fri Jun 07, 2013 5:51 pm

EK fly to KBL in the coming months, can anyone confirm this? aircraft will be A330 frequency?

EK cargo 744ERF currently fly Dubai-Kabul-Hong Kong twice weekly.

Fly Dubai currently operate Dubai- Kabul and is very popular with contractor worker operations in Afganistan.

Would seem a bit of over-kill to have two operators on that route.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Why is it not possible, three Afghan carrier fly to DXB there was also a fourth which shut down, maybe they want to compete with TK by offering a better product than fly Dubai, TK also use A333/340 on the route at times.

I would be very surprised to see EK add KBL at this point. The demand for even EK's smallest, least premium aircraft - the 2 class A330-200 (27J/251Y) - likely just isn't there. Yet. Perhaps the situation will be different in a few years.

Look at what happened with BGW, a much larger and wealthier market with similar security concerns plaguing both the city and country. EK only began BGW at the end of 2011, long after several other reputable foreign network carrier airlines had successfully established service there. EK had previously announced but then postponed service more than a year earlier, citing lack of demand for the service.

Aside from TK, KBL has yet to see service from anyone other than local airlines, Indian Subcontinent network carriers (that many avoid due to poor service), and LCCs. EK doesn't even serve KTM, which is a pretty big source of foreign laborers for the GCC countries and a fairly big draw for Western tourists. I just don't think KBL has enough demand - especially when it comes to premium pax - for EK service at this time. Maybe the market is ready for narrowbody service on QR or EY, though.

And this is where QR is better to serve these smaller markets from the GCC with the right size aircrafts

There should be a separate forum for "rumors". IMHO rumors have no place here.

That's rich, do you know forum rules state add Rumor in title regarding such topics., or would it have been acceptable if the rumor was about a North American route or some other popular region?

If and when conditions in Afghanistan stabilise in Kabul I see no reason why EK would not consider Kabul. That is not the same as saying that they are about to start a service.

I am not employed by EK, nor am I located in DXB at present, so I am not a party to the various rumours. But what we can tell from the past record is that EK will respond to market conditions where they believe there is some value in providing a service, and they will just as rapidly withdraw from one.

The fact that flydubai currently serves Kabul need not be seen as a barrier. There are other routes that are served by both FZ and EK. Clearly the determining factor is whether the route can serve both low cost and premium passengers. At the moment the demand may not be there.

There is definitely a sizable market between Dubai and Kabul. There are currently seven daily flights between the two cities (3 on flydubai, 2 on Safi, and 1 each on Kam Air and Ariana). Air Arabia also has a daily roundtrip out of Sharjah.

In fact, I wonder if there is any other destination with as many flights that Emirates does not serve.

There is already precedent for Emirates sharing destinations with flydubai. For example, both fly to Karachi, Sana'a, Muscat, Riyadh, Kuwait, Amman, Beirut, and so on.

Well my rumor reply got deleted even though it's right in the title, but I am willing to bet it's a codeshare with a narrow body a/c.

Not sure if this plays into it, but having spoken to a few FlyDubai pilots some time back I remember them saying that operationally KBL is a difficult station to fly into, something about the high terrain around the airport vs. weather conditions and the capability to do a one engine go around on approach if need be. Something about a high bank angle as well I think, and maybe air density? It was over a lot of drinks in Dubai so its really fuzzy at this point!

Given how I've heard that yields on our flights to BGW are pretty good, I wonder if KBL has the same front cabin demand from similar contractors working in Afghanistan?

EK doesn't even serve KTM

Which I feel like is a gaping hole in our network? I mean FlyDubai flies there but I was in KTM recently on vacation and was astounded to hear that QR had 3 daily flights and a 4th one on certain days! (their crew get a layover in the city too which made me jealous). Etihad also has a rotation on the A330 I believe and I know that Oman Air and Air Arabia fly to KTM as well. That's massive demand, something a daily two class A332 or one of the 772's could grab? When I flew over on FZ the flight was a fair mix of tourists, business and labourers.

It makes sense for EK to add this flight if FlyDubai becomes a bit strained by increases in Loads.

All the more since Nepal Airlines quit Dubai.

Isn't Peshawar where the UAE elites take their falcons hunting? And every country has a certain number of people high up in the government who will fly J when they don't go on government aircraft.

Yep - 17x weekly.

EY from AUH: daily
G9 from SHJ: 17x weekly.

Quoting sq_ek_freak (Reply 13):

4x daily now, with Nepal flying 4x weekly. So, 32x weekly from DOH. This means 'wider Dubai' (DXB and SHJ) has more weekly frequencies to KTM than DXB. Still, I fully see your point: it's very odd that EK itself doesn't fly to KTM. Could it be a bilateral issue?!

No they do that in Rahim Yar Khan, fly in on their 744 and other aircraft sometimes even Etihad aircraft, the airport is also named after sheikh Zayed, no foreign airlines fly there.

Who are Saudia codesharing with to KTM now that Gulf air is out.

happened at Peshawar too many times including rocket attacks, not a single airline has pulled out some had temporarily suspended the service but returned, infact Emirates upgraded from A330 to 777.
