ANA 787 Engine Issue At Fukuoka

Mon Jun 10, 2013 12:04 pm

I can't quote on my iPad, but the news here is reporting a NH 787 at FUK had "engine error."
Flight 258 to HND, 232 people on board, was the flight involved. Anyone else with more info?

Is this Japanese news sensationalism?

Edit: news article I quoted was in Japanese. Also reported on the tv about 40 minutes ago.
Edit 2: finally able to link a news article.

I can't find anything other than the fact that the flight was cancelled.

...At least they didn't have to blow the slides and evacuate on the runway this time. Progress.

If we are going to get a newsflash every time an F/A spills coffee on a 787, then I think it's more like A.net sensationalism. But it is what it is.

The sky is falling!! The sky is falling!!!

Comon people. Yes, the 787 is having problems, but with this pattern, weather delays will be blamed on the 787.

C'Mon now, really? I guess this wouldn't be a good time to report the SJC-NRT 787 was 15 minutes late too!

I'm just waiting for the day where they ground it again because of a "strange odor" coming from the lavs.

Those 787's will have more, more, more, and more problems as time goes by.... Eventually something even worse than the battery problem they had...

Just wait ! 350 will enter into service soon and then all the eyes will turn to focus on this new bird. Will start from this week or next week with first flight event.

I don't know, from all outward appearances, Airbus seems to be managing the A350 project much better than the last two airframes that came out of A & B.

The above post was supposed to reference the story a few years back of the coffee spill on a UA ORD-FRA flight where a spilled cup of coffee in the cockpit let to an accidental declaration of hijacking.

For some reason I can't post the link or edit the post above?

And here's another one:

Maybe somebody will start another thread and then maybe even a "787 Delays and Turnback" forum.

. . . and above all, they manage the post EIS problems that will arise in a proper fashion, so that operators don't feel the need to spill the beans. Which could return the focus back to the allready high profile 380 and 787 problems . . .

Well, the A350 hasn't flown yet as of today but that's just about to change. That's when the microscope starts. A380 and 787 weren't helped by the fact that they were late of course.

since nobody seems to have looked at the subject and what prompted it here is a piece of that puzzle from Av Herald

"A JAL Japan Airlines Boeing 787-800, registration JA824J performing flight JL-35 from Tokyo Haneda (Japan) to Singapore (Singapore) with 155 passengers, was enroute at FL300 about 50nm southwest of Tokyo when the crew decided to return to Haneda Airport due to a left hand engine (GEnx-1B) anti ice indication. The aircraft landed safely back on Haneda's runway 34L about 30 minutes later.

A replacement Boeing 787-800 registration JA822J reached Singapore with a delay of 4.5 hours."

That was not the thread starter but the "next Issue" noted in reply 16 which tells the whole story.

Does anyone know how often airliners get engine indicators such that the flight needs to be cancelled? I suspect it is fairly common.

Speaking of tongue-in-cheek, apparently this disease is also affecting other aircraft types. Perhaps the 787 has something contagious??? It appears to be able to cross the A-B boundary. In today's news:

---"A Southwest Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Austin has been diverted to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, after reports of a suspicious package." (Boeing 737--does this model attract suspicious packages more often than any other models? Is it the batteries?)

---"A woman on United flight 1601 from Washington Dulles, began experiencing an unknown mental problem and threatened to strip on the airplane as it was making its decent into Houston." (B738 -- clearly another model that was put into service before it was ready, probably miswired IFE--or batteries?)

Swiss Airlines flight LX087 last Saturday, a brand new Airbus A330-300, while heading to the runway the aircraft hit one of the airport’s boarding bridges. (Probably Airbus' decision to use magnets in their "Sharklets" was not well thought out. But it may be the batteries.)

Remember all those 380 stories when she first came out? Bound to happen to any aircraft with a marred entry into service. The 787 will be plenty bad, but if she can get to the level of satisfaction that the 380 has come to enjoy then it'll all be water under the bridge.

With any luck the 350 will mark a new era of trouble-free introductions for both manufacturers. I can only hope that at some point someone will figure out how to do this correctly.

It didn't hit a bridge. It struck a parked vehicle, one of the large "mobile lounges" like those used at IAD to carry passengers between the terminal and aircraft parked at remote stands.

I recall reading early this morning that part of the issue was with the anti-ice system(s). That has traditionally been the responsibility of bleed air, but now is, like everything else on this plane, the responsibility of electrics. That isn't something that should be shucked off as insignificant (as it doesn't require locally freezing temps to be of critical use on a flight).

Actually the engine anti-ice system is still bleed air, the wing anti-ice is electrical. The problem was with the engine anti-ice system -- can't blame the fancy electrics on this one necessarily.

In this case, it sounds like the pax was the IFE...
