Air Zimbabwe Plans To Take On An A380

Tue Jun 11, 2013 8:43 pm

First it thought it was a joke but these words are coming from an Air Zimbabwe's spokesman:

Quote:
Air Zimbabwe has announced that it plans to take on an A380-800 as part of its long-haul fleet, in time for the resumption of Harare Int'l to London Gatwick flights in July. According to a report in Zimbabwe's Financial Gazette, Air Zimbabwe spokesman, Shingai Taruvinga, said a deal for a new A380 was underway, but could not disclose the identity of the owner, rumoured to be France-based. However, industry specialists have poured scorn on the move given that Harare International Airport has not the infrastructure to handle such an enormous aircraft. The Zimbabwean carrier was linked to two other high-profile deals in the past. The first, a planned deal with Ilyushin Design Bureau (Moscow Zhukovsky) for three Il-96s in 2008 and the second, for two A340-500s in 2011, neither of which ever came to fruition.

If true (which I doubt), I wonder where they could get an A380 so fast?

This article has more details:

Quote:
AirZim has not revealed from whom it is leasing this plane, but industry players speculate that this is also from a France-based airline.
http://www.financialgazette.co.zw/?p=43481

This leaves two options:

> They lease MSN002 from Airbus.
> Or they lease an A380 from AF.

Again: if true

They would need the A380's freights ability to carry enough Zim. Dollars to pay for it.

So its safe to say that this "deal" is as real as the tooth fairy? They have a total of 4 planes, one of which is stored and they want to get a hold of an A380?

They would have to wet lease it, wouldn't they? I don't think 6 weeks would be enough time to train the crews required.

Zimbabwe has been using US Dollars for a while now, I'd know, I was there last year and also in January of this year.

This seems a little rediculous, however, Zimbabwe as a country is starting to pick up again. Harare is bustling, there's food on the shelves, new restaurants are popping up everywhere, people are still as happy and friendly as ever. It's great news for my family, as we love to go to Zimbabwe for holidays. Honestly still one of the best destinations for a holiday, period.

So, although an A380 seems a little rediculous, it seems as if Air Zimbabwe might become a Phoenix, reborn from its ashes.

Airbus is still showing the order for 2 A380s on the latest orders/deliveries spreadsheet. Speculation last year seemed to indicate that they were likely to be cancelled but can't find anything official.

Due to their famous inflation levels, what is discussed as an 'A380' in Zim is actually a used A320 in all Y config, with no engines, and in NK livery.

however MSN002 can't just be flown off now, it's got no engines and hasn't flown for a number of years - would be cheap though if someone wanted to buy it!

Seriously, I had to check my computer for the date in case I was having a senior moment and it was April. The first.

They can't afford a B735. There is no way they could afford the associated costs with an entirely new massive aircraft. If SA can't afford or need them, why would UM?

If Air Zim got their hands on some new Antonov's or something rolling off a chinese production line (unlikely as even the Chinese US engines and I believe that's an issue) They'll be doing well. Believe this one when I see it.

If you think Air Zimbabwe can seriously take on an A380, take a look at this - Air Zimbabwe Comes To The End Of The Road - http://bit.ly/zuScfu

I covered their demise for more than a year and got hard confirmation from Airbus that squashed their repeated claims that they planned to receive two A340-500. The above story is laced with links to other stories that go into the depths of how much trouble AirZim has been in. While the airline is back, it is still barely a shell game.

That was my first thought when I read the headline. Mugabe could pay this out of his pocket but why should he when he owns the state bank.

However, this won't happen, they simply don't have the infrastructure to handle, even if they base the aircraft at LGW.

BTW anyone checked the sanctions? This might be a much bigger hurdle than filthy cash.

First of all they wouldn't be able to fill and A380 to LGW, also aren't there a ton of political sanctions on Zimbabwe because of Mugabe? I also know a few Zimbabweans in the UK and none of them have any desire whatsoever to even go home and visit when the situation is as it is.

I think this is all propaganda.

A6-EDA will be 5 year old in July. UM can try getting that frame?

UM can have an ambition to buy A380, so to me it is bit upsetting laughing at them or their issues in the country. They are in a mess not by choice but because of some people who run their country.

That is true but you haven't got a hope in hell in running an airline if you have a completely wharped business plan. Also, remember the government and Air Zimbabwe are hardly independent of each other. It's propaganda; nothing more, nothing less.

The whole thing appears to be complete fantasy, a struggling airline from a struggling Country states that they are going to operate the Worlds largest commercial airliner, when they don't have the infrastructure, and its a frame with a relatively small number flying, and no sign of one being available.

On the other hand when was reality ever a factor in places like Zimbabwe ? Mugabe and co will surely have enough money squirreled away somewhere to pay for one, so that's not a factor. Don't need it, case surely proven but it will be handy for those shopping trips to Harrods and Harvey Nichols. Infrastructure, once again it would only fly at best 1/3 full so no problem. Lack of aircraft availability, money as ever talks.

Its 99% certain that this is all hot air and wishful thinking, but stranger things have happened, and I'm sure Robert Mugabe would love to turn up at International conferences in his A380 whilst the leaders of far larger Countries fly scheduled. And it would even dwarf Air Force 1

Much overcompensating for something indeed. Maybe he REALLY thinks that if he shows up at the next big wig days event. in his big shiny new plane, that those in that circle will find a new respect for him, and the lovely country of Zimbabwe.

My cousin used to pilot for UM, and if what he says is correct, then that 380 would indeed have a harder life than most 380s currently flying. Plus many last minute trips to China or where ever the shopping leads him and the Mrs.

Maybe Mugabe needs a new private jet, and this is the only one big enough for his ego. Seriously though, a bankrupt airline from a bankrupt nation run by a crazy paranoid dictator that has run his country's economy into the ground and hates white people and especially Britain is going to start flying an A380 to London? They should get a few second hand 757/767s for the same price and try to create a realistic business plan, perhaps by providing onward connections to some of the other nearby economic disaster zones, genocide centres, warzones and rape and AIDs hotspots. If they do get them they should call their first A380 "Lunatic Dictator" and the second one "My Wallet".

G'day

I guess with South Africa's Zuma trying to get hold of a 777 for his personal use this is a matter of mine is bigger than yours. One size up from a B777 is A380, arguably also the B747-8, so Mugabe has not much of a choice.

Cheers

If they lease it, it won't be 002...but is this no longer being the flying palace?

Nope, Alwaleed bin Talal has sold it. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-0...o-invest-in-middle-east-firms.html

Btw, the A380 just seems to be a repeat of history as far as that part of Africa is concerned. Mobutu Sese Seko used to charter an AF Concorde for his (or was it the missus?) shopping trips.
'What's it doing now?'

Ditto my recent experiences. Honestly, I was shocked by the rate of progress. Obviously it will take years to recover, but I am immensely pleased that they have taken such huge strides. 2009 was dismal...

As for Mugabe - he is 89 and in the departure lounge. He doesn't really have much influence in the country anymore, everything has been handed over to his cronies, and in most cases, for the better.

As a side note, Air Zim have recently taken delivery of 2 x A320 (c/n 630 & 1973).

Ah, now I understand. It's not for Mugabe, it's for all of his cronies that are going to take over... that's why it needs to be so big!
