What is A380 F-WWDD used for?

Fri Jun 14, 2013 11:06 am

As of right now i am tracking AIB350 on flightradar24, and i see F-WWDD flying near Toulouse. What is Airbus using it for? Testbed for new technology? If so, then what about F-WWOW? What does Airbus do with its c/n001 ?
I know its a lot of questions, but whats up with c/n002 F-WXXL?

> MSN001 (F-WWOW) is currently the Trent XWB test bed
> MSN002 is the private jet, currently being stored in TLS
> MSN004 (F-WWDD) is currently used for airshows

They retain an A380 just for airshows?! Surely it must have other uses, no?

Nope, just for airshows and other PR stuff. Here are a few examples:

1) MSN4 will participate at Le Bourget airshow.

2) MSN4 with a special paint for the Chinese new year:

3) MSN4 during the Mercedes party:

If I was RR I'd be a little hacked off if they used an EA powered aircraft for a photoshoot.. take up the RR powered FTB..

PR stuff could also be flying potential customers around I'm guessing, taking future A380 pilots for a ride, etc.

That would be cool chartering it out for Birthday parties, Weddings etc but might have a hefty price tag for an event like that

Must be costing Airbus a fortune to keep 2 A380's airworthy.. I believe they were using an A340 as a testbed for engines, what happened to that plane?

MS4 doesn't have a cabin so flying customers will be a bit hard.

AIrbus still have both A343 and A346 testbeds in the fleet.

Regarding the two A380s Airbus has kept:

Keep in mind that these two aircraft have different engines (MSN 1 has RR, MSN 4 has EA). There might be some operational reason for keeping one of each handy.

I may be wrong, but I think the Trent XWB is too large to fit under an A340 wing. The A380 engines were a tight fit already, and the A350 engine is even larger.

The aircraft you're referring to is F-WWCA. As far as I know, it remains in Toulouse.

Sorry, my bad, the testbed was F-WWAI, which also remains with Airbus.

A380 MSN4 is not simply for airshows, it is still equipped with flight test instrumentation and regularly used for continous development flight tests, in particular during these past times when MSN1 was busy as the TrentXWB FTB, so that MSN4 took over as the backup aircraft. It is also used for customer airline training (flight & maintenance crews). And then in addition, since the A380's schedule is not so busy anymore, Airbus can send it to a bunch of shows as well.

I read somewhere it are the initials of the flight engineers assigned to these aircraft respectively.
