Status On TAM's First And Business Class Refits?

Sun Jun 16, 2013 11:31 pm

How has TAM done so far in replacing its old F with the new (beautiful IMHO) First Class, throught it's widebody long haul aircraft and the "rumored" or even promised new flat bed Business Class?

I haven't even seen a pic of the proposed replacement for the angled flat seats?

Has the formation of LATAM changed plans for TAM?

Thanks!

Yes LATAM has significantly altered TAM's fleet plans. LAN has decided to phase out 10 A332s from TAM's fleet ASAP. LAN will transfer six B-767-300ERs over to the Brazilian subsidiary starting this month. TAM also has four 77Ws on order.

Since LAN's three B-787-8s have resumed service; plus with the three new B-767-316ERs that joined LAN's fleet this year (CC-BDM, CC-BDN and CC-BDO); LAN has the flexibility to transfer six B-767-300ERs over to TAM. LAN will soon take delivery of another B-767-316ER (CC-BDP) this month:

TAM will take delivery of two B77Ws (PT-MUI and PT-MUJ) during Q3. The new 77Ws will be deployed on the GRU-CDG route and the GRU-JFK route; which will increase to 11x weekly with the 77W.

Having sat in Business on TAM in PT-MUB for 4 hours between SP and Santiago a couple of weeks ago, I can confirm that:
a) still old F, still old J
b) dear God, that Business Class seat just needs to go. It was uncomfortable enough for 4 daylight hours to Santiago, I can't imagine trying to do GRU-JFK/LHR/FRA overnight in it. I can understand why my colleagues moaned bitterly about it.

I have flown in TAM's angled lie flat business class seat (the tan, taupe, red, maroon (floral), olive green, bronze seats) many, many times to JFK, FRA, LHR, CDG. It is a double Ambien seat. It's also an eyesore. I have been bumped up to their First Class once from JFK to GIG non-stop. Still a horrible color combo, but quite nice.

The pictures of the new First Class installed on 2 773's (I think) and it was said to be installed on the other 773's and then the A330's a year ago. They also said a new J seat to be coming soon after but did not say exactly when nor revealed an image of the seat. I was betting on the CO selected Diamond seat as it is a popular stock model, unique no, superior no, but middle of the road good yes. What type of business seat does LAN have?

Everything has stopped at TAM. New frames are coming with the new configurations, but the old ones are not being refitted. J class is still awaiting the approval of the new seats, so even the new frames will come the old J like last year.

All plans are on hold, old plans are not longer the best plans, remember company is under new management

LATAM's CEO recently gave an interview outlining the group's goals during the next few years. The major goal is to unify the group's subsidiaries under a single brand during the next three to five years. Within four years, LATAM's narrow-body fleet will have identical interiors. The wide-body fleet will also have the same interiors.

LOL. That description reminds me of United's old Business class seat.

I am flying FRA-GRU next March and I was considering flying on LATAM Brasil in Business, if it has already the new Business class seats. Hard to find any exact information, this 3 year old thread is the best I could find.
Seatguru lists two variants of the LATAM Brasil 777, both with angle flat seats in J. Is that new or old? Any news about that? Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi I found this https://www.businesstraveller.com/tried ... ess-class/

It is dated August 06 2015 and says, "TAM serves this route with a B777-300ER, one of ten that it has in its fleet. All ten of these have recently been reconfigured to remove first class and give more room to business class."

I hope all are configured with this new full-flat seat and you have a comfortable flight.
Never be proud. Always be grateful.

IIRC the reconfiguration was only about removing First Class. The Business Class seats are still the old ones, but they have installed ottomans, so that it's less cramped. They did not want to invest further, because the plan is to retire the 77W soon.
I would not pay to fly it. You would be better taken care by LH.

This was the best news that Brazilian passengers have heard in years!
Have you ever had the opportunity to fly TAM a few times? Once or twice is no reference, sorry.
Try to have some kind of problem and need their help thru call center, stores or on board ... you'll prefer a thousand times to go by bus or spend a few dollars more to fly another company. The only thing all their staff knows to say is: No, it's not possible, sorry.
A company reflects in its services the image of its owners. TAM was conceived as a regional small company and did not get where it is because it was well managed, but because the big Brazilian airlines broke almost together (RG, VP and TR) so they had a free way, without competition, does not mean they are good, they did everything fast and running now, years later, opted for this fusion with the LAN because they would not survive, that is clear as the day outside.

This is the refitted seat on their 77W. Basically new covers and ottoman added. I don't know exactly if the seat is now lie flat, but in the old config they were angled.

In addition to removing First, I think they moved the current J seats further apart (increasing pitch) and re-upholstered them to not look so... what's the word? I don't think there is a word for how awful that old upholstery looked LOL...

Does anyone know the new seat count? I assume the number of J and Y remains the same so just minus 4 due to the removal of First?

Well, the story about the upholstery...
The whole concept was conceived by a fashion stylist that was "in" among São Paulo socialites at that time.
Considering that TAM's president at that time was one of them...
