Ex-Fed Ex 727 At ABQ

Mon Jun 17, 2013 12:55 am

Hello A.Nutters! Although I am a BRAND new member (as of the last 5 minutes) I have been following this forum for years! Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but, does anyone know anything about this bird sitting out in front of the ABQ Sunport? Engines and APU have been removed but I can't imagine she will be scrapped there! Also, same question about a 727-100 baking under the sun at DIA? (Where I just came from). Thanks so much and happy to finally have taken the plunge and posted! Couldn't be more exited.

Yes, Fedex donated this aircraft to ABQ

Since 2000, FedEx has donated 67 of its Boeing 727 aircraft to aviation schools, municipal and airport fire departments, colleges and museums for training and education. Before its final flight, aircraft 727-200 REGISTRATION NUMBER N485FE provided FedEx with 20 years’ service transporting packages to destinations throughout the United States.

As with other FedEx community service programs, there are numerous success stories resulting from this donation.

"The donation of this FedEx B-727 to the city of Albuquerque is a tremendous gift," said Mayor Berry. "It will initially provide for emergency preparedness training and eventually, become an interpretive and learning center for the children of our community."

Yep... they are getting around. Sacramento Metro Fire just got one at MHR on Thursday. Looking forward to September when they move it to their training facility 3 miles away.

I'd been wondering about the -100 at DEN since my last trip out there as well, and all the information I could find pointed to it being used by the fire department as a trainer, along with the -200 alongside it.

Strange that it hasn't been painted yet. That's usually one of the conditions of the gift.

I noticed that the other week -- its sitting up at the north end of the former RWY 17 for those in the area.

Come to think of it I remember seeing that 727 back in April sitting down on the cargo ramp.

Interesting, as I don't believe I've come across a repainted one yet. Here at BIL they did not state any intention of repainting it. I would think FX would like them to stay in their colors as a reminder of where they came from.

There's an A&P school just outside MIA that has a retired DC-9 they use for maintenance training. ABQ has had a retired BA 747 on the field next to the Eclipse hanger for a number of years that at one time was being used for aging wiring studies. Both had their company logos removed or were completely painted. Airlines don't like old liveries on display, especially when the aircraft is not going to be maintained in flightworthy status. Joe Public is not likely to realize that the aircraft is being used for other purposes and will project the condition of that aircraft to the real fleet.

Curious, I could have sworn the fuselage wheels were steering.
