I missed this: Yesterday was also the first time a 747-8i landed at ATH. This was D-ABYC:

From there it flew on to TLV:

It was a PR flight.

So, any success on pictures? How was the light? I was in MEX last week and it was beautiful light on the day of arrival, but on the departure day was horrible rain and thunderstorm...

Glad to hear it was a great day and that the news are interested in that even as well. Maybe the 748 will be a regular visitor to MEX soon

Well indeed it was a lovely day yesterday, really unbelievable, we were able to take some pictures as it slow down on runway 5R.

I heard these rumours too. And that it flew to MEX now is a good sign as well I guess.

This, in addition to the Cargolux 747-8 Cargo that we see here as well. Together with daily 747-400s from Air France, KLM British Airways and Lufthansa, A-340-600s from Iberia, and A-330s from TAM, we've got a nice spread of heavy arrivals in the early evening each day.

It seems that plans have changed. The flight to GRU is in the air now but is showing up as 747-400 D-ABVO on FlightRadar24. Lufthansa and FlightAware are also showing 747-400. Only FlightStats is still showing 747-8. I wonder what happened? D-ABYG seems to be on the ground overnight at FRA at the moment.

Wilco, do you have any information on this?

Believe it or not, ANAC (Brazilian Flight Authority) has cancelled the 747-8i aircraft permission at last minute ! This is simply ridiculous !

Sadly the BA 744 is not daily. I believe it is 4x weekly or something like that. The IB A346 is seasonally more than daily, and I believe A343s are used sometimes too. You are forgetting LA's 763ERs coming from LIM and SCL.

Even still, that is quite poor for a metropolis such as MEX. Gone are the days when we also had the JL 744, the MH 744, the A310 from AR and the Lauda Air 77E. We also had widebodies from LY and SU.

But here you seem to have an answer:

That is very sad and I am sorry for the Brazilian guys. Would have been great to see the new bird in GRU - hopefully it happens soon.

Here's the official confirmation from Lufthansa to start MEX with the 747-8 this Fall:

https://www.celebrating20yearsofmore.com/home/de/de/

Interestingly, it only shows up on the German version on the bottom right. D-ABYK seems to be delayed a little and I expect MEX service to start when D-ABYK enters service.

To hell with its poor sales thus far, that is one beautiful aircraft! I loved the look of the B744 but the B748i for me is hands down the best looking bird ever built by Boeing! I recently walked literally the full length of the terminal at HKG just to get my first close up look at the LH B748i. I hope a few more airlines order it as it would be an awful shame to live in a world where there are no passenger B747s left.
