Sat Jun 22, 2013 5:43 am

System wide, all planes grounded, some returning to gate. Just heard on radio. Looking for an internet source.

Agnew said the system failure was having more impact on the West Coast, since there aren't any East Coast flights originating that late.

A flight that was due to leave Phoenix at 7:50 p.m. PT en route to Burbank, Calif., pushed away from the gate, then sat for an hour before passengers were allowed to deplane, said NBC News producer John Boxley, who was on the plane.

This seems to plague SWA, this has happened multiple times throughout the years.

Nowhere NEAR as bad as UA/US/AA...

...of course, if WN would start charging for bags, then they'd have more $$ to fix problems like this

This is not a common problem at WN. In fact, I was quite shocked to hear it was WN. When I saw a headline that an airline was grounded to a computer problem, my first thought was AA or US. I can't remember the last time this happened at WN. Hope they get up and running soon!

Is it, now? I'm curious. When has this happened on a similar scale?
I'm struggling to think of an example in my 9 years there.

Well I guess it was just a hiccup because they are fully back on schedule.

According to a friend flying out of SNA, it was handled poorly. Agents at the airport directed customers to use the website but of course for customers whose flights were past departure time, the website thought they were already flying and wouldn't allow them to modify their itinerary.

Sure, these things happen, but for an airline that prides itself (rightfully so) on a good record of customer service, it is quite the splash of ice water in passengers' faces!

Why? AA had one outage a couple of months ago and US had on a few years ago. I wouldn't have drawn a conclusion tht it would be any particular airline........it doesn't happen that often to anyone.

One of the articles mentions a dispatch system and another reservations, check-in, and weight and balance.

If dispatch loses the ability to flight follow the airline by regulation needs to groundstop itself and flights in the air operate under emergency authority.

If dispatch cant send new releases and file flight plans, flights legally cant depart without a dispatch release so flights still on the ground will need to be held.

If the reservation system is down, it depends on the airline and how they want to handle the situation. Many will stop operations if it is an extended outage for the reservation and check in system but will keep operations going if its just a minor slow down.

I think it may have been sarcastic, especially considering the wink at the end, but even the big airlines have their problems and they charge baggage and in flight services.

Isn't WN 'one of the big airlines'? Doesn't WN call themselves the biggest something or other?

And I heard the opposite about other airports. It varies.

Uncle Sam says the limit on sitting on a plane going nowhere fast is up to three (3) hours. So my most humble apologies to Clark Kent of the Daily Planet or, was that NBC.

Oh the media is SO dramatic. "FLEET GROUNDED"... um..no. Most flights were already done for the day as it was late.

FACTS:

" an estimated 250 flights were grounded at least temporarily due to the glitch.."

"at least 57 flights had to be canceled even after service was fully restored hours later, a company spokeswoman said.
43 of the cancellations were flights scheduled for late Friday night departures in the western half of the country. The other 14 were Saturday morning flights scattered across the U.S. because crews were not able to get to airports in time to make the scheduled takeoffs."

"Southwest, based in Dallas, conducts on average 3,400 flights a day."

So, some 250-ish of the total 3,400 flights a day were affected.
