Biggest Airlines In The US, In Order

Fri Oct 27, 2000 5:54 am

Yo, do any of you guys have an official list, or link to one that states the 15 top largest US airlines. I’m pretty sure I’ve got the top ten down, United, American, Delta, Northwest, Continental, Southwest, US Air, America West, Alaska and ATA I imagine that Hawaiian would be up there along with Aloha, Frontier and probably Skywest (If that’s not included in United & Delta) Thanks for input.

Alright man, in pax numbers:

United
American
Delta
Northwest
Continental
US Airways
Southwest
TWA
America West
Alaska Airlines

#11 is ATA

Hawaiian is small niche carrier. Aloha is too, just a simple 732 carrier between sparsely populated islands!

Real Data

Fri Oct 27, 2000 9:38 am

From the airlines, data is Q3 2000. This is total, including INTERNATIONAL passengers. The cents figure to the right is the cost per ASM for the quarter, which I thought interesting for comparison purposes.

#1 Delta 27,351,000 9.14 cents
#2 American 22,097,000 10.31 cents
#3 United 21,458,000 10.98 cents
#4 Southwest 16,500,662 7.70 cents
#5 Northwest 15,950,000 9.29 cents
#6 USAirways 15,809,000 12.28 cents
#7 Continental 12,155,000 9.65 cents
#8 TWA 7,211,000 9.72 cents
#9 AmericaWest 5,178,000 8.42 cents
#10 Alaska 3,655,000 10.04 cents

If you look strictly at DOMESTIC passengers, here is how they stack up. Data is for August 2000 from the DOT website:

1. Delta 9,086,764
2. American 6,693,174
3. Southwest 6,463,421
4. United 6,179,481
5. USAirways 5,259,312
6. Northwest 4,605,072
7. Continental 3,242,814
8. TWA 2,449,864
9. America West 1,806,771

Hope this helps.

I believe FL is #12 in pax numbers, with maybe Frontier #13?
