SQ Reveals New F, C, And Y Cabins

Tue Jul 09, 2013 2:47 am

Just released via their Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151743958103679.1073741834.6352578678&type=3

My thoughts:

Y Cabin
Doesn't seem changed too much, other than slimmer seats and new colors. Not quite sure I like those colors. I like the current tan and turquoise they have.

C Class
It seems the seating area is much smaller now and you are further away from the window. Having said that, the current C-class seat can be uncomfortably wide, and it also doesn't recline much. It seems they have gone away from the fold down to the more traditional reclining seat.

F Class
Doesn't seem like a major change, other than it looks a bit more plasticky.

Kudos to SQ for working to upgrade a 5-year old product that is still years ahead of the competition. However, shame that it kinda looks more like CX!

Cheers

I give it an A+ in the three cabins. Nothing very new but it seems that SIA just does it better than the competition!

Y
The narrower seats in Y seem to suggest a 3-4-3 layout for Economy class instead of the current 3-3-3. I am glad that they retained the footrests in Economy as they were testing the possibilities of removing this.

J
In J, the seat width has been reduced from 30 inches to 28 inches and more storage space in the side unit has been added. Still a flip down bed concept. IFE screen size increased to 18" from existing 15.4". The colour of the seat shell is extremely cold and doesn't reflect the warmth of the existing leather coated product. The increased recline to 132 degs from 128 was necessary as the existing product just doesn't recline enough in seat mode.

F
In F - not a fan of this mini-suite concept. I still don't get why SQ decided not to roll out the existing Suites fleet wide on the 773 and 77W. The interior of the seat retains its warmth however the metallic grey shell is rather unnecessary and annoying. Nice to see the length of the bed extended to 82".

I never like F/J cabins that look almost simlar, in this case the F cabin looks even lamer, with that J I wouldn't dish out an extra cent for the F seat, so bland and un F like.

Suites would be better like 380 also the metallic shell is un classy and un-SQ atleast in F class.

People were saying the same thing when the previous generation of seats came out. The service and overall experience makes the difference worthwhile, trust me.

That maybe true but I would like the cabin to portray that as well not look like an upgraded J seat, honestly for a moment I couldn't differentiate F from J not only in the smaller pics but also in the larger ones.

You can say so, but that says more about how good the the J class product is than the F class. J class with SQ might be expensive, but I think it is in par with or outperforms a few other carriers F class.

Some people pull the footrests all the way down, cover them with the socks from the amenity packet and use them as a leg rest to support the bottom of their calves so that they can stretch out fully.

and that's why F should have been way better looking, the J can actually qualify as F on most high class airlines.

Then it has to be the SQ suite as on the A380, but apparently SQ finds that to be an overkill for the 77W and A350 fleet.

Links direct to SQs website:

http://www.singaporeair.com/jsp/cms/...K/press_release_news/ne130709a.jsp

According to SQs website, the new products will be on the new and not yet delivered 8 77W, and A350 fleet. Does that mean the current A380 fleet as well as current 77W fleet will keep existing cabin?

I like the look of the new designs, nothing ground breaking - however a nice evolution rather then revolution. I do think we will have to wait to see real life cabin shots and try it out before making a judgement.

What I do think is interesting is the attention to the finish that SQ places on the products, not just its soft product but by the looks of it its hard-products as well. I find the designs, modern, understated and sophisticated - high quality and distinctly classic SQ. This is often the deal breaker between the hard product on many other carriers. A good example is the finish CX uses vs that of DL. Same seat but the finishing and subsequent impression of product quality given by CX is higher. I am curious is there anyone here with a better understanding who could advise the cost difference that would be present for the upgraded finishes? Surely with a rather long life, it would be worth it? I can't imagine premium seats themselves are that cheap.

Aurgh - and, if you ask me, a prime reason NOT to fly an airline. If one cannot be assured of the type of seat one will get when spending upwards of £5,000 on a fare, it is time to book elsewhere. This is one reason why I avoid EK.

It is a great pity, because the J class seat looks like a lovely place to spend 12 hours to SIN.

The New Regional J is newer than the current long-haul J, but it will stick out like a sore thumb compared to the new J, color-wise. Will they change the leather/covers? I wish they could change the seat because it is very uncomfortable for short people like me (5'8).

Glad to know Y will remain as 9-abreast.

Although I agree on the look of the hardware between J and F to be similar, ultimately the service and food quality is much, much higher in F (both on board and on the ground).

Cheers

Until March 2014, yes.

Current Business Class products are:
Ultimo recliners on the non-refurbished 777-200s.

Spacebed angle flat on the non-refurbished 777-200ERs (these will be refurbished by the time SQ receives the new product)

New Regional angle flat on the A330s and refurbished 777-2/300s.

Current long haul Business class on A345, B777-300ER and A380.

New product for the 777-300ER and A350 being delivered in September.

SQ assigns specific products to specific routes. You will know what product will be serving your route in advance. I don't see what the problem is.

That's true. However, given that you're most likely to fly long haul with SQ, you'll only have a choice of 2 options - the current one of the 380/777 and the new one due in Sept to LHR. This means that it's a choice of the 380 (the old, but still lovely seats) or the 77W and the choice of new seats. SQ reflects the aircraft during the time of booking so I think it's alright!

I like the new seats. It lacks the warmth of the current ones but I think it's still too early to say. Will definitely need to see how it looks like in the cabin. It does bear some resemblance to luxury sports cars though.

Most airlines will have at least some different cabin products across their fleet at any point.
Unless of course the airline has not revamped their cabin products in 15 years...

SQ doesn't swap planes around, every route has a particular model attached to it like the A380 or 77W.
SQ's website and numerous third party sites out there tell you which cabin products are found on which fleet so you know in advance what to expect

The new seats are mainly designed for the future A350 fleet where 9-abreast is the only real option for SQ. We didn't expect them to go 10-abreast in only 8 77W machines, did we?

I will fly in December on A380s, and I wonder if I have a chance to get these new seats!

No firm plans as yet. You won't have the new product but a fantastic current product nonetheless.

Just locked in a F class seat to LHR in late September. Looking forward to trying the new F seat.

SQ had a media event today in which they released the new cabin hardware. I think the original renderings I first posted look quite different from reality. I REALLY like the fact that for the J seat they are bringing back the purple color they used to have on the Spacebed seat. Plus, I like the wood work on the J seat as well. In a way, from a purely visual point of view, the old J seat looks more like F while the new J seat looks much more functional. I think in a way it helps to make the F product more differentiated.

Gorgeous new business class and thats really all that matters, this is where revenues come from.

Never seen anyone get much excited about an economy class seat or configuration anyway, but I am sure SQ will remain possibly the best and most reliable service in this class.

I dont mind F, they dont give free upgrades and therefore I dont expect to ride it anytime soon. From an outsider point of view it looks nice though, no golden fru-frus and I much prefer the open concept rather than the outdoor WC-esque mini-cabin thing.

But C class will continue to be amongst the top 5 in the industry and thats whats important here.. 1-2-1, do you hear this BA, QF, EK, etc etc...just hope they come up with a full necessaire this time (or am I asking too much?).

although the hard product doesn't feel like much of an upgrade, at least the darker colors look a lot more classy

those light beige in existing J are getting long in the tooth

scary the size of that J seat nearly rivals the QF F on A380

In Economy Class, Singapore Airlines missed the mark in not providing some sort of Economy Plus or Premium Economy option. The new Y seat is nice, but does not make up for the airline's failure to acknowledge a significant (and lucrative) industry trend.

They failed to acknowledge 3-4-3, an even more significant and lucrative industry trend.. so maybe we should cut them some slack.

In any case, I'm sure maybe people on this forum could agree that SQ's "Y" class is equivalent to other US carriers "Y+" options, if not better. Without a doubt, their Economy class is superior to anything offered in Y stateside.

Does anyone have the actual width/pitch dimensions on the new Y class seats? The current A380/77W 32" ptich / 19" width is probably the most comfortable economy seats out there.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Well SQ didn't have much luck with their premium Economy product on the A340-500, as passengers appeared to prefer to just pay for Business Class. Subsequently, SQ eliminated premium Economy and just went with all-Business Class.

If SQ is not seeing a decline in Business Class traffic, not offering a premium Economy product is a smart move as it does not dilute revenues by giving customers a cheaper option.

The First Class looks like the present J class. The new J class looks like a compromise between the new Cathay J class and SQ old J class. I woud love to see the seat map with the new seats.

not at all. both new F and old F sleep forward, while both new J and old J sleep angled relative to direction of travel

the differences are very subtle. the most noticeable would be the darker colors and more stylishly curving walls

but then again, when they're already one of the best, it's hard to leap-frog

neither BA/AA is up to SQ's old F/J, let alone the new generation

The current A380/77W 32" ptich / 19" width is probably the most comfortable economy seats out there.

TG has 34 inches of pitch in coach on some of its planes, no? AM also has 34 inches of seat pitch in 3-3-3 configured 777-200ERs in coach. Don't know the exact width of the seat, but the 3-3-3 config. is very telling.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Plus, one of the pics of the first set that Coal shared show a family of three in a middle row of three seats in coach.

That information was not available/the picture was not online at the time of the start of this thread.

I dunno if SQ supplemented its gallery after Coal started this thread, but when I first logged on this thread and clicked open the link pasted by Coal in his opening post, the pic was already there:

They sure did. All that was initially up there was a set of three seats next to the window; not one showing the middle block. That's why if you read the second reply on this thread, somebody suggested that the seats looked narrow and thought they could have changed for 3-4-3.

The narrower seats in Y seem to suggest a 3-4-3 layout for Economy class instead of the current 3-3-3.
Quoting NZ107 (Reply 6):
Had word from someone at the launch - they're remaining 3-3-3; as it should.

Yes 3-3-3 will remain:

"Singapore Airlines will continue with the 3-3-3 configuration as seen on its current Boeing 777 jets, although the new seats will be fitted only to new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and SQ’s forthcoming Airbus A350s."

In any case, I'm sure maybe people on this forum could agree that SQ's "Y" class is equivalent to other US carriers "Y+" options, if not better. Without a doubt, their Economy class is superior to anything offered in Y stateside.

A gimmicky 32" pitch seat still does not equal 35-36" of pitch in United Economy Plus, the 34-35" pitch of Delta Economy Comfort or AA Main Cabin Extra, the 34" pitch of regular Asiana/Korean Air/ANA (selected aircraft) Economy, or the various Premium Economy cabins with up to 40" of pitch. I very much like SQ's service, but it's allowing other carriers to handily outclass it on Economy Class hard product, especially for those travelers willing to pay a premium for an enhanced (read: more comfortable and spacious) economy experience.

That may be true, but I'll gladly take the extra 3" in seat width over pitch.

I asked earlier, but don't seem to see any responses. Does anyone have actual numbers on seat pitch/width for the new Y seats?
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Now they need to work on their Flight Attendant attitudes. Typical of the SG attitude, if you pay a lot, they treat you nice. FA's service J and F go out of their way, but in Y you are left to fend for yourself.

Not sure how lucrative it is. Many airlines with premium Y products have quite small cabins, much smaller than J class. And TK recently announced that they're dropping their premium Y product which apparently was unprofitable. I've been on a few BA flights where J and Y were virtually full while premium Y had a very light load.

Having flown all 3 airlines extensively in F/C the past 18 months your dead wrong.

In fact I found SQ's A380 J seat to be the worst of the 3.

That has not been my experience with my (limited: 5 flights) experience with SQ in Y. Quite the opposite. A short story will suffice. Last summer I flew the day-time MEL-SIN, and skipped lunch on board. At dinner time, the FA came to me, asked for my dinner preference, and brought it right away to me, just before starting the service to everybody else in Y, because "you must be starving, since you didn't have lunch." I found it amazing that she remembered, and, even more, that she cared. After all, it was solely my decision to skip lunch...

No offence, but I would associate that attitude with Hongkong from personal experience. I'm unable to speak Cantonese and Mandarin.. Had terrible service there compared to my friends who could. Also, compared to the other Asian carriers I've flown I felt the SQ crew are better in cross cultural communication and I attribute that to Sg being a diverse multi-ethnic immigrant country.

SQ is typically more expensive out of SIN, being their homebase, so I had no incentive to take them and local sentiment seemed to be that they were over-rated. But in 2007 I decided to give them a shot. In the boarding lounge for that flight, I saw the crew and asked one of them if they distributed newspapers onboard. He replied that they do but they have limited copies, it is subject to availability. I took that to mean I wouldn't get a copy.. It didn't matter to me that much. When we boarded and were settled in, the same steward came by- calling me by name he said he saved me a copy. I later realised he was serving the rear Y cabin. I was in the forward Y cabin. Ever since then I swore by SQ's in-flight service and have never been disappointed since. In fact almost every flight, short and long has been simply amazing.

Que? SQ's J is significantly better than AA's J seat on 757, 767, 77E. That AA J seat was horrible from its introduction and widely panned on traveler-oriented sites like FT.
oh boy, here we go!!!
