First A380 Routes For Asiana & Vietnam, Where?

Wed Jul 10, 2013 4:31 pm

Asiana has 6 A380s on order, Vietnam Airways has 4.... They're suppose to start taking deliveries next year

Anybody care to wager what their first A380 routes would be???

My guess-

Asiana- ICN-LAX
Vietnam- SGN-CDG or maybe SGN-FRA

Asiana already said it was LAX along with some intra Asia route like China/HKG.

Vietnam Airlines signed an MoU, not a firm order. And that the MoU was signed over three and a half years ago and had yet to be firmed makes me think that it will not be (at least until Airbus meets whatever specifications VN stated they needed to in 2010 before they would firm the MoU).

Asiana : probably JFK has a good chance since they're sending their premium OZ Suite there (although 77E to 388 is a huge increase in size).

Vietnam : probably not FRA. I'm thinking more along the lines of SYD.

Looks like more range, so now that there is a 575t MTOW model...

Vietnam Airlines is waiting for Airbus to provide more detailed specifications for a new higher gross weight variant of the A380 before deciding whether to order the superjumbo.

The flag carrier revealed last November that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus covering four A380s. Vietnam Airlines chief executive Pham Ngoc Minh told Flightglobal on 22 June that the carrier has still not committed to acquiring A380s and the superjumbo is still "under study".

Vietnam AIrlines never firmed their MoU.

Asiana Airlines A380 route will be one of the following:

Thinking outside of the box, what about VN SGN-SVO?

There is more, the first A380 capable airport in Vietnam won't be ready until 2015 at least so they are not in a hurry to firm that order.

Cant be that big of an issue making room for a couple of A380's. I was just at SGN and HAN and it seemed to be more than enough room to park, on runway and between taxi ways. If the airline want's to operate them, I'm sure it won't take several years do get things ready.

Asiana's first A380 route will be within the region, they're going to keep those A380s close to home for the first few months.

As far as long-haul, I gotta go with LAX like LAXint'l mentioned

LAX-ICN is interesting...with the huge amount of airlines on LAX-NRT/ICN, OZ might be able to make more money flying a smaller plane to LAX (Supply vs. Demand. Ex: UA 787 LAX-NRT instead of 777). Of course, now that they are low on 77Es, the 388 might be the best option.

If they really want it, they could. But they didn't. And there are no A380 delivery slots left before 2016 anyway.

There are only 2 core airlines flying LAX-ICN. KE and OZ. (TG has a token 4x weekly stopover run).

ICN is the single largest LAX international O&D market, and 5th largest overall US-Pacific market.

With continued strong growth (+7.1% min 2012), the need for capacity is there.

Airlines can only add so many frequencies, before upgauge in capacity is needed.

Anyhow for OZ, the A380 will be replacing the 744 fleet, which already serves LAX, so its not a massive seat increase at the end anyhow.

If they want range, the wing twist helps.

That was my thought.

Vietnam is very unlikely to firm this order IMHO.

From October last year:

Quote:
“By 2014, Vietnam is projected to be the world’s third fastest growing market for international passengers and freight, and the second fastest for domestic passengers,” Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s Director General and CEO, said in a statement on Friday.

I guess maybe part of Morty's response will answer yours. Is there that much left of the french colonial system in Indochina to support this? If not, what's driving that demand from HAN or SGN to France? From what I've heard French isn't widely spoken in Vietnam anymore.

Tourism tourism tourism.

Vietnam is a hot destination including from France. In 2012 some 219,721 French visited Vietnam, making them the largest non Asia-Pacific visitor group except US citizens.

Add in the fact VN is in Skyteam, Paris is a good sized market to collect connections all over Europe from.

Tokyo-Narita is definitely one of the stations that Asiana's A380 will serve ... because the Delta Flight Kitchen near Narita Airport has ordered A380-compatible inflight catering trucks for this service.

+ a huge Vietnamese diaspora in France ==> very important VFR traffic.

It's a high volume leisure destination so a high density A380 makes a lot more sense than higher frequencies with smaller planes.

Yes when you consider KE sends 77W and 380 to JFK, Asiana is rather "outgunned" with a single 77E, which is their flagship. Ordinarily would not use status language for planning, but it applies here.
