Emirates Launches A New Route - Kiev

Thu Jul 11, 2013 8:26 am

Dear All,

This is to inform you that Emirates today has officially announced that it shall be launching a new nonstop service to KBP-Kiev, Ukraine effective 16JAN14 as the carrier looks to rapidly tap emerging markets in the ex Soviet Bloc which have good demand to DXB + beyond to SE Asia in particular.

Flights shall be operated on a daily basis using an A340-500 with the below mentioned schedule which has already been uploaded on all across major GDS systems for sale.

EK 171 Dep DXB 1715 Arr KBP 2035
EK 172 Dep KBP 2210 Arr DXB 0455+1

Currently on this route, FZ operates a daily service departing DXB at 0920 and PS operates 5 times per week

FYI the market size demand between KBP and DXB over the past one year was 80,000 passengers !

Good news for KBP and Ukrainian pax. Cant help but notice that EK is moving more and more into FZ territories... I guess its a matter of time before we see them moving into thinner but growing Eastern European and African points as well.

Nice equipment choice! I thought it would have been the 330 they started it on.

Interesting timing, avoiding the peak departure banks at DXB and not being in the middle of a peak arrivals bank either.

Despite being dated, I do like the A345. Will it be operating with full FJY service? I guess the choice of aircraft type is in part driven by the planned phasing out of the A332s?

Perhaps this is a utilization play for a plane that would otherwise RON at DXB? Relatively short hop for a plane with such long legs. Does EK operate the 345 on many other routes of similar distance?

emirates really baffles me! whilst I understand the attraction of under served market, there are many more western destinations that in my opinion would be way more lucrative. BRU anyone with its lackluster connections to anywhere in Asia for example?

Wish them good luck nevertheless!

DXB-LYS is also operated by A345.

100% agree but BRU would not work for any airline with a 2000 arrival into BRU and that too a long haul service.

Remember EK's fleet from a rotational stand point (a345 in this case) may only be free between that duration period hence a route with DXB-KBP flying time range would picked as its shorter than DXB-BRU.

Potential in BRU for EK is a no brainer but would only work if they depart DXB at either their 0300-0400 hub wave bank or 0800-0930 hub wave bank. They will get very high S/F in F/J class along with cargo and can have a real negative effect on the market share of QR/EY/KL/LH/LX etc to Asia in particular. With 9W now most likely pulling out of BRU, this is one opportunity just waiting for EK to exploit to its fullest extent !

I don't have a complete listing but some of the routes operated with an A345 in recent times include:
BEY, EBB, HYD, LYS, NBO, SEZ, TUN, VCE and VIE.

Although I agree EK would have a large impact on other airlines in BRU, I just don't think it would be to the extent that you describe.

When EK started flights to DUB, everyone thought the same for the other Middle East service with EY, however in fact both routes have grown.

BRU has a large catchment area, including that of AMS. Due to its proximity to AMS, people in the dutch and Flemish regions often compare prices from both airports.
Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

They operate the 345 to BEY as well. EK move was preceded by FlyDubai announcing IEV ops, alongside KBP. I guess now FZ will fly to IEV and pull-out from KBP once EK starts flights.

This is a route we've speculated on for a bit. Good to hear.

I bet not for long.   (I think the A345s will be parted out within 3 years.)

Huh? It is in the middle of the 4am to 7am arrivals bank which has great connections. That is in the #2 arrivals bank. It is the regional departure bank which will have poor Asia connections.

So there will be a long layover for many passengers, for IMHO, the 4am to 7am arrival bank from Asia is most likely to feed this flight at DXB, but this flight is well timed for mid-east connections:

EK no longer flies the A345 long haul. From the link (which dates back to 2010)

The most striking example of changing priorities in fleet planning at Emirates is exemplified by the airline’s 10-strong fleet of ultra longhaul Airbus A340-500 aircraft. Once hailed as the airline’s flagship and deployed on some of its most prestigious ultra longhaul nonstops, this aircraft has now been relegated to a secondary role with very similar characteristics to those of the A343 fleet.

The fuel burn of the A345 is too high for long haul. In particular as EK has a *massive* 77W fleet, enough 77Ls, and a growing body of A380s for long haul.

Not for the premium cabin.

Just wait. EK is getting flack for 'over-serving' Western Europe, so now it is time to serve Eastern Europe.

Which would push down yield... I don't understand the complaint. Usually its for EK *starting* service somewhere.

Bad news for Ukraine international/ Windrose... I wonder how this will affect them, if they will discontinue DXB operations altogether.

Kiev is maybe one of the only cities in the world where the same low-cost airline would serve two airports, so i guess this is gonna change now with EK's entrance where we can, as previously said, expect FZ to pull-out from KBP and leave room for EK.

At the same time, probably the second most important city in Eastern Europe, didn't have any mainline Gulf carrier serving it until now. There were 'only' FlyDubai and Air Arabia. Also the timing of the flights is really great, phenomenal.

Good move by EK, wonder if it will be followed by QR as well. EY announced their intention of serving Kiev through codeshare with B2 via Minsk.

DXB-LYS is also operated by A345.

1 flight a day to Venice also sees the 345 operation in place (EK137)

That's what DWC stands for ? Never knew that.

Blimey they do mean business don't they !

What percentage of its capacity will be used by the airlines of the 'world' other than EK ?

Good news for Kiev though going forward being linked to such a vital facility. Any other city for that matter.

You know actually I'm not being funny but I am beginning to see the light here.

Now I know why EK and therefore the UAE government is beginning to show interest in other airlines as with the QF arrangement. It was all part of the plan all along.

With more and more people having to connect through Dubai the city itself will basically become one big transfer lounge.

One big money spinning transfer lounge full of theme parks, glitzy hotels and shopping centres.

QF is just the start.

My apologies. It is genius.

To be fair EY have got the start on them, but it will definitely be interesting to see which partners EK can find. With the notable exception of Jet, which was a master-stroke IMHO, EY's partners are mostly a rag-tag bunch (JAT anyone?), and it is not exactly clear how they plan to integrate them all yet (other than making sure they fly to AUH), so it will be interesting to see how EK progresses.
