If There Will Ever Be A Microsoft Airways...

Fri Oct 27, 2000 1:56 pm

...Then it will probably be in the form of what is now Alaska Airlines:

"Microsoft's Gates Has 5.33% Passive Stake In Alaska Air "
WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) co-founder and Chairman Bill Gates has a 5.33% stake in Alaska Air Group Inc. (ALK), according to a Schedule 13G filed Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

A Schedule 13G denotes passive ownership of a company.

Gates and his investment vehicle Cascade Investment LLC reported shared beneficial ownership of 1,409,500 common shares of the company.

Based in Seattle, Alaska Air Group is the holding company for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.

If Microsoft had an airline it would freeze up or crash every ten minutes. You'd have to restart everything every few hours. and for best performance you'd have to scrub it once every six months!!! And in order for everything to run properly you'd have to spend more money and get Norton to keep things from completely falling apart. *lol*

And the term "blue-screen of death" will have a new meaning.

I heard of this before about Microsoft planning to build its own airline. Dunno if its true or not.

However, I sincerely hope that their planes will NOT crash as often as their software. Haahaa!

I wish the code for Airbus' FWB was written by Microsoft - it might be rather more stable than it is.

I suspect that the stock ownership of AS stock is tied into the very special commercial deal Microsoft has with them - no more than the deals that some other majors (GM, IBM, etc) have with various carriers.

Celidh, your usually on mark with most topics, here I'm not sure.

This Alaska Airlines stake is not owned by MSFT, but rather Cascade Investments, a private company owned by Gates personally. I have a feeling that the stake is simply an investment as somehow Gates thinks AS will be worth more in the future than it is now. Any preferential treatment with MSFT employees is probably negligible if existant.

Incidentally, Cascade also owns a significant piece of Boca Resorts (PAW). PAW owns the Florida Panthers hockey team, the Boca Raton Resort & Club (I'm a member!), The Arizona Biltmore, The Registry Resort in NaplesFL, and the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 hotel.

Clearly, Gates has steered Cascade into travel and tourism investments.

Regards,
Russell

One more thing, the carrier GM and UAW had made arrangements with ProAir has filed for bankruptcy protection and had their Air Operators Certficate revoked.
