787 Production/Delivery Thread Part 17

Sun Jul 14, 2013 11:54 pm

Due to length of part 16, here is part 17.

Well despite the fire on Thursday, Boeing is still going full tilt on production...2 B-1 flights and a EWA flight kept them pretty busy. ZA466 was supposed to make it's 3rd flight but got timed out...it'll probably fly tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see how deliveries go.

Also got some information on ZA274. IT was supposed to have its B-1 late last week but Boeing is still trying to complete all the write ups it has on that air frame. LOT wants the aircraft on July 24th but it's looking like it'll be the 26th or later.

It's a C-1 (unless it was a complete basket case on the previous two flights which I doubt was the case).

With LOT ZA274 getting airborne on its B-1 today there are 7 airplanes at PAE that could deliver this month so far plus the 2 delivered already in CHS -- looks like somewhere between 9 and 12 -- that's a good pace. So much for all the worry.

Just came back from spending the day at Everett. Simply spectacular. Was lucky enough to see a landing (A7-BCE) and a take off (N29907). Also didn't realize how close you can get to the aircrafts. Its like Paine Field was built for plane spotting. At both ends of the runway there's a hill that allows for uninterrupted views of takeoffs/landings. At Kilo South, you get as close as 100 feet from the planes. At the EMC fence, you can get as close as 10 feet from VT-ANC in the first position. Within 50 feet at the 11-29 runway, tower ramp and the fuel dock. Only the flightline is a bit out of reach without a good lens or binoculars. I had only an iphone so pics not great. a little teaser below of A7-BCE taxiing.

I also took the 2 hr tour which takes you into the assembly lines. in the 40-24, the first 789 looks as good as ready for roll out. not much equipment left around it and engines attached. in the 40-26, things are not rolling off as quickly as some have been predicting. only 2 "new" frames in positions 1 & 2 and two "old" frames getting the battery fix in positions 3 & 4. i guess this is good as the backlog can come off the flightline. I wouldn't anticipate seeing a "new" frame roll offs the 40-26 in the next two weeks.

Anyone on this forum anywhere in the northwest should make it a duty to spend some time at Everett. For $18 you get to spend two hours on the assembly line. A once in a lifetime opportunity.

Uresh - i'll send you a PM with all the aircraft positions so you can update your spreadsheet.

Cheers

Do you remember the position of ZB001, 3 or 4? Both are slant positions.

Yes it was. I was surprised to see it there as well but being 10 feet away difficult to confuse with any other frame. still with the star alliance logo on the side and all. a lot of work remains though.

Yeah ZB001 has been in position 3 for several weeks already. It's probably going through a lot of systems testing right now as well as installation of any remaining flight test equipement. Boeig's going to take their time on this one. but I still think it should be out by the end of the month. It has to go through position 4 in 40-26 (for aqueous wash of fuel tanks) then paint and finally to the flightline.

Air India is supposed to take 3 more '87s by the end of August. This is in order to help support the start of India-Australia service due to commence August 29th.

ZA242 and ZA243 look to be ready for delivery except they need to have customer flights. ZA235 would be the next one to be delivered as it is done with change incorporation and really has been ahnging out at theEMC with nothing to do until space on the flightline opens up.

Yeah ZA235 spent some time on runway 11-29 with engines attached, we should see it at the fuel dock very soon.

ZA242 is currently at the fuel dock, which could indicate it might fly soon (customer flight?).

N964AM (compass rose) and G-ZBJD (flightline 201) came out of the 40-26 yesterday (July 16). I anticipate a line move was also done that day with N965AM moving into P3, LN 128 into P2 and LN 130 into P1 with P4 empty for now.

Probably no chance to see ZB001 before it enters the paint hangar? I would think this would be enough of an event to have a spotter checking out the bridge right? 2 hours remaining if the sources are true.

If I am correct the 787-9 is being built on the temporary surge line.

Interesting pictures. From what I can work out the production line includes at least two new pieces of tooling. The Wing Alignment System on tracks and the Barrel Joining Rig. Both fairly serious investments and would seem somewhat permanent.

Can someone with more knowledge confirm if the production line is at seven units per month. I have been following NYC777's thread for the last couple of months and it seems slower than that.

Cheers!

Much, much better (proportioned) than the -8. Can't wait to see it in KL colours

Boeing is saying that they are producing at 7/month but my information is showing it's slower than that. I think they're sloly ramping back up to 7/month since end of June. I wrote that during June Boeing was essentially re-configuring and re-constructing the final assembly line in 40-26 thus that is the slow down but I also think they slowed things down due to the increasing number of assembled 787s crowding the Everett ramp. If they can clear off at least 10/month through the end of September then things should be back to normal.

That is not possible as the ELT is a basic requirement for basic VFR flight.

Screw economics; I wish they had left the longer wings on the 787-9 for purely aesthetic reasons.   Looks great as is, though.

Man that -9 looks sleek. Looks incredibly longer than the 8 just by looking at it.

Wrong! If you look at the MEL's available online for 777 & 787 (thru the FAA I believe) the ELT (fixed) is listed with "0" required if it is "deactivated/not installed" for up to 90 days. If there was no listing in the MEL it would of course be required but it's listed therefore it's not necessarily required. There is even "talk" now as to whether it's even necessary for a 787.
