This means one B777 gets freed up to either increase frequencies some where or launch a new medium haul route to Europe or Asia/Africa.

I remember reading here that EK want to retire their A330s. So most likely the 777s will takeover the A330 routes.

Emirates has 55 A380s on order + options for 30 more.
Instead of opening a thread every time they announce a new destination served with the A380, it would be more simple to have one remanent thread listing destinations NOT served (yet) with this aircraft !

The inbound/ outbound flights go to GRU. Does this mean the 380 will service Brazil?

You're thinking about Singapore Airlines. EK does not have a tag-on to Brazil from BCN.
Future flights: CPH-BOS; CPH-SVG; CPH-PVG-HKG-MNL-DVO; CPH-CDG; CPH-NRT; CPH-MIA; CPH-PVG

Does MAD see the EK A380?

Either way, this implies EK is doing well on the route.

Quoting B747forever (Reply 3):
So most likely the 777s will takeover the A330 routes.

Do not forget the large A359 order. We'll see those replace the A332s, A345s, A343s, and 772/77E. While I'm sure some A332s will be replaced by 77Ws short term, for fleet planning, EK will have a new 'baby bus.'    IMHO, the A359 will become the launch aircraft for most routes, excluding some cities that bilaterals are keeping EK out of (e.g., Xi'an or Wuhan).

Just the other day I was thinking about it... and I was like ¨nah don´t think it will ever happen¨ and there you go.

Good news for BCN and I hope to have a chance to fly the whale

Now we need QR to bring the A350 and I´ll be a happy chap!

That is not true. Madrid area is as wealthy as Catalonia. Emirates flies double daily to Madrid with 77Ws, that helps to make out about how large the market is.

Correct me if I am wrong, but is this not the first time that EK sends the 380 where they only fly once a day? Didn't they send the 380 to destinations with 2 or more daily frequencies?

Yes, it does 3 times a week. Air China flies to MAD 5 times a week. QR also flies to BCN but with 330s, MAD gets a mix of 77W/77L/330, but in high season they normally send 77Ws.

Barcelona is one of the Med's largest cruise ports and a major cultural city. I see more Far Eastern/Asian/Australasian tourists there every time I go, so throwing an A388 at the route makes perfect sense. It is also a major conference and business destination - the traffic is there.

Agreed.
We can add that IB does not fly Eastward further than Moscow or Tel Aviv. A strategic mistake when you consider : 1/how touristic and attractive Spain is, even for Middle-Eastern and Asian people (Barcelona, Madrid and Andalucia of course, but also Ibiza or Marbella) 2/ the growing south America to Asia market.
IAG should be more offensive, just my 2 cents.

On a personal note, I am just back from a trip to BCN. I was lucky enough to stay in a 5 star hotel near the harbor : 70-80% of the clients were from the ME. I was quite impressed, I never noticed that before (and I have been going to BCN once or twice a year since 20 years!)

Kuwaitis and Saudis in particular flock to Geneva and Spain in particular (in mainland Europe that is) during the summer season hence this is not surprising at all.

The top 10 markets relevant to feed EK's BCN flights saw the following demand over the past 1 year to/from BCN:

NRT 100,000
PVG 90,000
DXB 65,000
ICN 62,000
PEK 52,000
ISB and LHE combined 50,000

KIX 41,000
HKG 40,000
BKK 32,000

Evident by the fact that through this whole week, EK's business class on BCN-DXB sector at least is more or less FULL !

It is Ramadan and summer (aka unbearably hot in the Gulf) = peak season for Middle Easterns. You would had probably noticed the same if you were in London, Paris or Geneva... the new thing (let's say the last 10 years) is how Barcelona has got into this truly international circuit attracting a wide range of tourists, from cheap "drink till you drop" weekend breakers from the UK or France, cruise tourism from the US or LATAM and high-spending tourists from Russia, China or the ME (I know a few cliches here, but you get the point  )... today BCN has become one of the top global destinations and still growing at a very healthy rate.

Also bear in mind that tourism from fast-growing Asian economies (China, India, Indonesia, etc.) is really underrepresented in Spain (being Spain the 4th country in the world with more tourists) compared to more "traditional" destinations for Chinese or Indian like France, Italy or the UK. Most of those countries do not have any cultural connections to Spain (like India to the UK), the traditional lack of connections to Asia from Spain does not probably help (a vicious circle here), and the Spanish authorities historically had a very narrow-minded mentality and a lack of interest for tourists from those countries (i.e. making a tourist visa a hassle for Chinese or Indian nationals because they come from "poor" countries). That is certainly changing (Russia being the most notable case, with tourism from Russia to Spain literally booming over the last 5 years)... so you got a potential market of hundreds of millions of tourists (of course, Chinese tourists will never be as common in Spain as German or British... but when your numbers today are negligible and we are talking about the 2nd largest economy in the world and Spain being a very attractive tourist destination... just connect the dots)... and Emirates will be happy to connect them

IMO there are probably another couple of things. First, the crisis in Spain (and Europe)... many Spaniards have also ventured to the Middle East, Far East and Australia for jobs... only 10 years ago it would be an oddity an Spaniard working in Shanghai or Dubai... I personally know quite a few people who have moved to those places (and other EK destinations). Also, Spanish companies are becoming more international and less European and that certainly means looking for the fastest growing markets in the world (basically Asia). And don't even forget that during the Spanish boom years, Spain received a good number of foreigners from Pakistan (big Pakistani community in BCN, for instance, even PIA flies there) or China... so you have a noticeable VFR traffic today Spain-Asia (in both directions) that didn't exist only 10 years ago.

And even for Spanish holidaymakers (contrary to some comments in this thread, some people in Spain still do have money to travel) I personally see a shift of mind. Older Spaniards would venture outside Europe to the typical destinations (US and Latin America where you can basically use Spanish)... newer generations are venturing into more exotic places... which makes Asia on top of the list... and I have no doubt that QR or EK help to stimulate that traffic... if you consider the historical lack of connections Spain-Asia (specially compared to North and South America). So instead of going to Punta Cana or Cancun as their parents did, they will go instead to Phuket or Vietnam.

The majority of the (quite wealthy) Chinese community in Spain comes from Zhejiang... so I just assume they use PVG as their "local" airport for international travelling to Spain. I am pretty sure that this explains the gap between PVG and PEK (almost twice the number of travelers to Shanghai than to Beijing with Emirates; I don't know if that is common to other destinations).

ISB and LHE are interesting as well, if you consider that PIA offers direct flights, and you got QR on the route.

And places like BKK I am pretty sure are almost entirely explained by local Spanish tourism to Thailand.

It's not just Spaniards seeking jobs abroad. It's also likely Spanish companies seeking new business overseas due to the weak local economy. For example, next door TP has seen a significant increase in business passengers over the last couple of years. They attribute this growth to Portuguese companies being forced to expand overseas due to the weak local economy, which stimulates international business travel.

Surprising BOM is not on the list. Anyways, a major bollywood film from 2011, based on a road trip through Spain has spawned a lot of interest in Spain as a holiday destination for Indians. The film was supported by the Spanish tourism board.

http://travel.cnn.com/mumbai/life/in...ovie-boosts-spanish-tourism-694426

Quote:
La Tomatina, the tomato-throwing festival, was re-created in Buñol in Valencia for the film. Some 16 tons of tomatoes were flown in specially from Portugal, thanks to the movie's government tie-up.

However, the Spanish government does not usually partner with commercial ventures.

"The theme of the movie was about a holiday in Spain -- we saw it fits with the storyline and we collaborated with the producers of the film," said Saliankar.

Until a few years ago BCN was totally unserved going East. Now there is QR with a daily A333 (and two rotations during some days in the summer). There's SQ with almost daily 77Ws to SIN (some stopping at MXP), and EK with a daily 77W to be upgraded to an A388. Not so underserved, I'd say. None of these routes existed 5 or 6 years ago.

Well, the growth is there obviously, but only due to EK, QR and SQ, ie "foreign" carriers. Considering the figures given by behramjee (Reply 20) and the analysis by SCQ83 (reply 23), it seems a bit odd that Spain's flag carrier never tried DXB, NRT, PVG, DEL or BKK from either MAD or BCN... Besides VFR and O&D between Spain and these asian destinations, IB could take advantage of these services to connect (6th freedom) Asia and South America where it is the leading European airline - but for how long ? This market is growing... Any idea why IB never thought of this ?
