Last KLM MD-11 Destinations

Mon Jul 15, 2013 1:40 pm

Hi everyone.

As many of you know, the MD-11's PAX days are rather limit now with KLM receiving more A330-300s and the latest -300s far more capable than earlier versions. I'm wondering if anybody knows for the rest of the year what likely MD-11 destinations will be? Also, I have never traveled on the type, I'm wondering if its worth the effort to get it or not. I now the jet looks gorgeous, and the trijet design I sadly fear will be a thing of the past soon enough. But is this beautiful jet worth making a special effort to ride? Where should one sit (I am assuming you can hear the tail engine towards the back?) does it have a different feel inside or does it pretty much feel like flying any other slightly older widebody -- aka other than the seat configuration you wouldn't feel that much different on a 767 or an A300?

Any info at all would be great.

At the moment scheduled destinations are LAX, YYZ and YUL.

YUL has historically been your safest bet to log the MD-11. Now that they've got 5 flying frames around (Number 6, PHKCC has been grounded in the AMS technical area for the past two months) you're almost certain to get one. YYZ in the summer schedule is blessed with sometimes 2 MD-11's a day! LAX has a second daily flight on certain days which will be operated by the MD-11.

I was happy to log 2 examples on a trip to YUL last January. Their interior looks a bit plastic, but is quite modern and the large windows are amazing. It feels like any modern jet to me.

Their flights are being posted on this facebook page

Latest info from "Scramble" Dutch forum.

- PH-KCC didn't operate since April 28 2013. (used for spare parts ?)

- PH-KCK will be retired at October 27 2013 and is scheduled to be ferried at November 25 2013 to the desert.

- So, at the moment five are left for production : PH-KCA, -KCB, -KCD, -KCE and -KCK., in the winterschedule only four are available.

- Actually there is production for 1-3 aircraft each day : 3x (Su and Fr) , 2x (Mo, We, Th and Sa) , 1x (Tu).
YUL KL 671daily
KL 691 and KL 695 6 flights /week.
LAX KL603 3/week

2 aircraft are on "standby" .

Scheduled retirement KCA til/incl. KCE will be at October 26 2014. (but this may be changed-earlier ?)

Sounds like LAX is my option, I can come through and connect to it easily from Australia.
Is it worth it? or would everybody think i'm better off just getting on another 747 or 777 flight and saving a
few hours going the other way?

Bragging rights are always worth it. 20 years from now when a new generation of geeks start "What was the MD-11 like to fly on?" threads, you can be front and center with your trip report. That's worth going a bit out of the way for, shirley.

I'm very tempted... its meaning I'm going the long way to europe and downgrading half the trip to economy yet i'm still very very tempted! having never flown on a McD widebody, I'm feeling like this is something i should make the effort for!

KL603 is again operated by 744 aircraft after June 29, see :
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/KLM603/history

IMHO, , LAX is a very unreliable destination to catch a MD11, because the actual aircraft rotations are changed at a daily base, depending availabilty of 744 aircraft*.

* All 744 aircraft are scheduled for a business class upgrade, so depending the progress of these modifications, one or more 744 aircraft may be unavailable.

Absolutely. I did just that about three weeks ago coming home to LAX. It's a fantastic airplane; very comfortable and with large common areas. Really quite different from most widebodies of today.

The most interesting thing that I saw was the galley set-up; they don't have any seats for the F/As, so they have these foldable chairs that makes them look like they're camping in the galley. Naturally, if you go, ask for a cockpit visit--on the ground--and you'll see the famous spectacular windows.

it's a curious airplane, and, if you can, one that you should fly on...

LAX-AMS will be MD11 during the month of September 2013 ONLY:

- LAX dep. 17:15 - arr. AMS 12:50 KL 0604 Non-Stop MD11 - Thu, Sat, Sun ONLY

Probably last time you can catch a scheduled widebody three-holer in that part of the USA.

I was quite surprised by the really huge windows. It's a nice add-on and helped for a lot of time spent by looking around when reaching Canada (AMS-YUL) last year. Somehow I haven't been pressing my nose on the window for such a long time since I was a child...
And yes, the No. 2 enginge is audible inside in the back. Esp. while being on final there is quite some thrust up/down.
Therefore I would suggest the last row. It's also one of the few 2-seaters (and KLM charges extra for it).
Other than that it's not that special - KLM refurbished their MD11s some years ago, so they look quite modern.
Oh, I found it to be what I would call a noisy flight - the 77E on the way back from YYZ was much quieter.

I flew LAX-AMS on KL in June aboard PH-KCD. I decided it was now or never. I was not diappointed. I enjoyed every minute of the 10h20 flight time.Highly recommended. Takeoff from LAX was worth it..

I live in Virginia, and three times I've gone out of my way to fly to Europe on one. Twice from San Francisco and once from Montreal. I hope to do it again before they are gone.

No, SFO is scheduled to be MD11 in W13 (5 weekly). However, if want to have a higher degree of certainty then YUL should probably your bet (that will probably be the final destination to loose the MD11).

Just checked and KLM has scheduled 3x/weekly MD-11 AMS-SFO-AMS for W13 as part of a 6x/weekly schedule.

The other 3x/weekly are A332.

- dep. AMS 10:05 - arr. SFO 12:35 KL 0605 Non-Stop A332 Tue, Fri, Sun
- dep. AMS 10:05 - arr. SFO 12:35 KL 0605 Non-Stop MD11 Mon, Thu, Sat

So Yes..........California can enjoy a widebody three-holer at least until March 2014.

You should try the md-11 its very comfortable and powerful plane. I like it more than A340 or 10 abreast 777. Try to get window seat theres good view from the big window.

I'm very interested in this as I am flying to Florida to visit a friend in November, but I want to fly across the Atlantic in a MD11. I've been watching Flightradar24 & KLM671 AMS-YUL is always a MD11! But going via SFO would be more interesting for me although I wouldn't want to turn up & find a A332 on the flight instead of the scheduled MD11! So am I better off sticking with going via YUL as I will be returning via a different route & this will be my only shot at a MD11 flight!

Yes indeed. A few years ago I flew YUL-AMS-YUL on KL and was really impressed. I had the chance to be seated near the rear where you not only can hear very clearly the rear engine but you can also feel it. The person with whom I traveled was surprised by that push feeling in her back. Not to forget the aircraft's rocket-like take-off.
