JAL7 (B788) Returns To BOS

Thu Jul 18, 2013 9:17 pm

JAL7 made a u-turn over Canada and is returning to BOS. Anyone know the reason? (And please - no stupid crew-names or Boeing-bashing please...)

It can not be too serious, otherwise it would have been the next big airport and not all the way back to Boston.

Just made a big turn - now heading north. Dumping fuel?

Now heading east out to sea.

I'm a flightradar24 noob, too . Can anyone explain? Plane just seemed to make a 270-degree right turn?

Circling at 13.000 ft over the ocean .. probably dumping fuel. Obviously nothing critically wrong.

Great way for the folks at JAL in Japan to start their day. Some fuses likely burning short.

Well now it's the headline on www.boston.com

Let the media frenzy commence - 787's fault or not. Timing couldn't be worse.

Today's thunderstorm has finally passed so I'm heading back out to work.

Supposedly a fuel pump problem was indicated. They let the thing fly over downtown Boston and taxi itself back to the gate. They clearly are not too worried about it.

Only 50 or so flying and several diversions per week. High risk of being delayed if you book a 787 flight. Must be expensive to operate at the moment, diversions cost a lot. Fuel being dumped, booking passengers on other flights, hotel etc.

I would think that business people with important meetings, appointments to attend etc will be increasingly wary about booking a B787 flight until these issues are sorted out.

An abundance of caution is being used by all 787 operators, I believe...while not downplaying any of the issues with the aircraft, I feel confident that over time, the 787 will prove itself to be a very reliable aircraft...As has been mentioned, the media picks up on everything the 787 does....or at least the bad stuff....But as we've seen over the last week or so, the media is after the Big headline...And as todays incident shows, this was picked up right away and will be splashed all over the papers tomorrow...

So JAL will take a three hour delay, find nothing wrong with said pump and chalk it up to yet another faulty computer error message.

Flight leaves and passengers are grumpy yet happy to get to NRT.

UA is having a hell of a time clearing these error codes that love to pop up. Does anyone know if Boeing outsourced the software engineering in addition to the rest of the major components on this a/c?

Since the issues began they latched onto anything to do with the B787. They did it when the A380 had issues also. Now since the fire at LHR on the ET B787 they are waiting to report even a burst tyre! of course some of the issues are very much news and in the public interest to report but we will get every issue now reported too.

Its not a 787 it is more like a 7 (180) 7...doing a u turn quite often these days

Well still remember the days when the A380 was called the A180? well the title has just passed on i guess...so no hard feelings

but seriously..what are the chances that your flt is delayed if you book a trip on a 787 these days...

I just did a quick scan of the following news sources:

www.abcnews.com
www.cbsnews.com
www.cnn.com
www.drudgereport.com
www.foxnews.com
www.nbcnews.com
www.yahoo.com

The 787 finally caught a break - Detroit, Michigan just declared bankruptcy.

And, in Boston, photos were just released of the Boston Bomber bloodied in the boat with a red laser pointer on his forehead.

The above newsites are focused on those two things among others.

This 787 U-turn story will never make it out of Boston.

Lucky break for Boeing!

Yes. If you're interested in aviation and anything happens to the 787 these days you want to discuss it... This idea that a thread like this one should not exist is really strange: if you feel this way, just do not read it! And spare us the "you guys are really morons talking about this".

Internationally only. The US media has become schizophrenically monomaniacal with stories du jour. Boston Bomber with red dot on forehead, Detroit bankruptcy, and US attorney general defying jury verdict and illegally directing the state of Florida not to give George Zimmerman his gun back despite acquittal and failure to charge him with a federal crime----- and today's 787 incident has no chance of gaining traction in the USA because it didn't crash. None. On a slow news day, conversely, it would be the lead. We've got unrest all over America due to mob mentality and disrespect for the rule of law, people storming freeways on both coasts and surrounding cars and punching trapped occupants while chanting for the arrest of a man found not guilty many states away, and mobs rioting in quite a few towns and assaulting bystanders, abetted by the corrupt news media and rent-seeking rabble rousers who are granted extended television time. 787 will get no notice the next while or so until the Zimmerman mess cools down.

These days, more and more Americans in search of news reporting are looking to foreign press, as our domestics have gone Soviet-era Pravda.

Boeing caught a PR break today.

As Boeing has many foreign buyers, the foreign media will likely be calling the shots then. US media is too self-absorbed with the chosen narrative of celebrity, anti-hero and racial grudge to pay one jot of attention to the 787 right now.

Apparently the 787 is now flagged by the major news services as an easy bit of news every time it comes across the wire - an easy target. I was actually rooting for Boeing that they would get some breathing room here.
Probably not so abroad.

I still think that the average American is not paying one bit of attention, despite the stories. Our country has become a dumb, slumbering ox, as we were before WWII.

Carry on - I was taking a break from some heavy night-time automotive suspension work - time to get back at it before my back seizes up.

Since the beginning of July, ANA has flown 1544 flights with 1 cancellation and 3 delays of over 2 hours (1 which was a cascading event because the inbound flight was delayed). That's 99.74% of the time -- just the facts Jack!!

From Bloomberg:

Quote:
A Boeing Co. (BA) 787 Dreamliner flown by Japan Airline Co. aborted a trip to Tokyo yesterday and returned to Boston because a message light indicated a possible fuel-pump issue, the airline said.

Flight 7 landed as a “precautionary” measure at Logan International Airport where Japan Airlines’ mechanics are examining it for any possible damage, Carol Anderson, a spokeswoman for the carrier, said in a telephone interview. She added that 184 passengers and 12 crew members were on board.

The pilots didn’t declare an emergency and the plane landed safely after dumping fuel, Lynn Lunsford, a spokesman for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, said in an e-mail.

On another note, 184 Pax out of 186 seats is a great load factor...
