Wow! I hope everything turns out okay. I would also be interested in learning what this man's motive was.

To me that seems like it could be a protest against something, maybe a protest against poor healthcare or living conditions of disabled people in China? Doesn't sound like the explosive device would have been designed to hurt other people (unless it somehow failed to explode properly).

Dude must have had a crap bomb if it caused all that smoke with no injuries except for the bomber. Last word was no flights were affected.

We weill never know- the Chinese media never release motives, so there's no use trying to speculate at all.

Yes they do. Take the recent hijacking of the Hainan Air Embraer in XinJiang province.

Well wasn't that done by those turkish separatists who released a manifesto about the hijacking to the media?

This guy seems a bit different from that. A manifesto will almost always be released by the media...something like this probably wont be

The bomber was allegedly protesting conditions for the poor in the PRC.
The terminal he set his bomb off in is used by UA and AA. Not a good thing.

"An online microblog attributed to the man says the explosion was to protest at his ill-treatment by Chinese police.
The blog suggests his lower body was paralyzed after he was alleged to have been heavily beaten by security agents in southern China in 2005. "

the plot thickens.

No, it was done by domestic terrorists. Their excuse was pathetic if I recall.

http://www.latitudenews.com/story/ch...nd-passengers-say-no-to-hijackers/

"In June, six Uighur hijackers targeted a Tianjin Airline plane minutes after it took off from Hotan Airport in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in eastern China. Uighurs are largely Muslim, and represent a substantial minority population in Xinjiang."

HK news stating that the 'bomber' used homemade fireworks, and was aged 34.

Not if he was using black powder. I have used some cheap ammunition in the past and it causes a lot of smoke like this. This is only conjecture on my part.

Its certainly caused alot of smoke !

Really? Just looks like they left a door open at the terminal to me. (Having been to Beijing and seen the air there.)

I was in T3 by the gates when this happened, which is a train ride away. I was on UA898 to IAD and I had no idea that it occurred. Our flight was delayed 2 hours but not because of the incident. I first heard about when I got off the plane in IAD and looked at an email from my wife about it.

I arrived on CA from PVG right around that time it not have been T3 as all looked normal. We were saying if that happened in the us the airport would probably close.

As for the guy. I doubt he has a bad plight but he crossed a distinct line that makes me hope they throw the book at him. The vast majority of people in the airport had nothing to do with the situation he is in

Well the revolution in Tunisia was started when a man put himself on fire. Granted, this already happens in China every day with the only consequence being policemen wielding fire extinguishers.
