Delta Adding IND-MBJ & IND-NAS

Sun Jul 21, 2013 3:49 am

This is such a strange add. Delta is adding nonstop service from IND to MBJ (Montego Bay, Jamaica) and NAS (Nassau, Bahamas). The service will be Saturday only service starting December 21st. So far the routes are bookable on Delta.com until the end of March. Yesterday MBJ could be booked as early as Dec 21 but as of last check it available Jan 4. Not sure if it will be available again 2 weeks earlier. Can anyone figure out the reasoning behind these two additions? I know Legacy Travel Club has a major announcement due a week from Monday. Could this be related? In any case this will give Delta 3 international flights out of IND on Saturdays this winter. Service to MBJ will be on the A320 and NAS is a CRJ-900 I believe.

I'm going to bet you are right on about some travel package firm buying most of the seats on these flights and then DL just selling the rest as icing on the cake. Where is FIS in the new terminal? Or are MBJ and NAS preclear airports?

FIS is I think gates A4 and A5 which is right over with Delta's other gates.

I was thinking.... I am kind of surprised DL is getting this instead of F9... especially with the Republic MX right across the runway and plenty of E190's sitting around.

It is no longer an issue at IND like it used to be. International arrivals is part of the A concourse. From what I was told by a member of the IAA a few years back is that if anyone arrives through an international arrivals gate, they will be able to get back to the concourse without going back through the main security area in the event they have a connection. That is a far cry from old IND where international arrivals was at some building across the field from the main terminal. No direct link and even worse... no jet bridges.

I certainly wasn't expecting DL to start these routes, but I don't think they seem too far fetched. DL has a very strong presence in IND (following from NW) and will probably be able to fill these flights quite easily while improving utilization for aircraft that would otherwise just be sitting around.

If the flights from IND do well, I wonder if they would try CMH-MBJ/NAS or bring back CVG-MBJ/NAS on winter weekends?
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

Great to see DL adding IND-MBJ. Hopefully it will do well and be a regular winter rotation. Quite a presence they have there in the '' Bay "........

They did mention in the past about creating preclear but haven't heard anything about those plans for quite a while now.

Hasn't DL been running Saturday-only IND-CUN service already this spring/summer along with BNA, CMH, and a couple of other smaller cities where DL is strong in the respective local market? Rather than ask "why," ask, "why not?" This is a low-risk way to deploy a likely otherwise idle airplane--especially if many of the seats have already been sold by a tour operator as suggested.

Yes, DL has run CUN service from IND since the PMNW focus city days.

I'm surprised it took them this long for an airline to add IND-NAS/MBJ - NAS with the popularity of the Atlantis resort, and especially MBJ with the popularity of the area in the Midwest (there's even an LAN-MBJ route, for crying out loud).

I think DL will do well on these routes. TZ used to fly them with 722s (?) and IIRC they did fairly well. Does anyone know the type of a/c that DL will be using?

A Saturday only service is not a complete surprise. DL has done similar winter Saturday only services. I am thinking MKE - Cancun for example.

My guess - there was just enough traffic to make it worthwhile. I'm guessing some package deals were a pig part of the traffic, but clearly there is a market to be served.

Also, it could open up some seats for other "odd" connections to MBJ and NAS.

It'll be interesting to see, especially since DL is running weekend flights to MCO during the summer now and adding seasonal TPA and RSW flights this winter to go along with MCO and CUN.

Skybus had applied for CMH-NAS but had never started it. Much like IND, DL is on the concourse at CMH with the FIS gate (C46, and, for the time being, is right next door to it thanks to the renovations and gate shift).

I second the notion. I'm surprised it took it this long to come back in some type of nonstop manner. I'm also surprised no one has done seasonal service to Cabo or Puerto Vallarta yet from Indianapolis.

MBJ and NAS could be the first step. I'm a bit curious as to why they are running Saturday only to MCO. With so little service left on that route I'd think DL should be able to operate that daily. MCO is a big destination and a big DL station.

Sounded strange at first, but as others have noted, DL has done a lot of Saturday only flights to CUN. The planes are parked anyway that day, and DL(/NW) has a decent sized presence in IND. I don't see it as a premier money making route, but it will probably at least provide a bit of extra revenue that they wouldn't have if the planes were parked.

Interesting move, I wonder how well they'll fare
Ironically I have never flown a Delta MD-90 :)

Not to mention it is good publicity for the airline. What I like is that it appears the plane flies out and then makes the journey back to IND. Great for airline geeks like us interested in adding another dot to our destination maps. I'm not going to burn my miles on a free ticket but if the money is available I'll give MBJ a try.

DL will fill these flights easily.

The market for both routes is nothing to sneeze at when you look at it on a weekly basis

MBJ - 200 people each way per week
NAS - 120 people each way per week

I'm sure the majority do travel between the times that the flights are available.

Saturdays have slack capacity.

Rather than this being about IND, I think it's a useful idea of the "package" DL could give to all markets similar to IND. DAY, DSM, OMA, possibly MCI, FAR...

DAY, OMA and FAR aren't airports of entry. DSM is, but good luck convincing airport officials to staff immigration for a weekly Cancun flight.

And regardless of whether a flight pre-clear, it still needs to be an airport of entry.

So how does preclearance work for flights to airports like DCA and LGA? Those are considered airports of entry?

Last year, DL added a significant number of "fun & sun" flights on weekends during the peak holiday & spring break travel season.

DL has loaded many of these flights again during the ~ 2 week Christmas holiday & New Years period.

The added benefit is to utilize otherwise idle aircraft during periods of lower capacity on business-heavy routes.

I don't have time to look for them all, but I can see flights such as:

RDU/IND/BNA/PIT - MCO
RDU-CUN

All operating around the Christmas holidays.

While I know AirTran doesn't currently fly non-stop between these 2 markets, these also could be to beat Southwest into the market for when the post Air Tran integration is done.
