JAT To Relaunch Beirut & 9 Other Destinations

Tue Jul 23, 2013 11:22 pm

I was surprised to learn that JAT was returning to Beirut after quite a number of years away.
I was a regular fliers of their's up until 2001, transiting at Belgrade before continuing onto London.
Sometimes the flight would depart Beirut only to land in Damascus before picking up more passengers.

Here is the article

http://www.balkans.com/open-news.php?uniquenumber=179048

The other destinations are Abu Dhabi, Bucharest, Budapest, Cairo, Kiev, Ljubljana, Prague and Varna

As exciting as this sounds, I have many questions.

Where are they going to get the aircraft for all this new flying and when? I have heard they are getting A319s but that has been said for years. Any confirmation on that yet?

Can JATs current aircraft fly all the way to AUH? Seems a bit far for a 733...

I will believe all this when I see it. I'm really hoping Etihad is bringing real change to JAT, unlike what the government has been promising for years.......
I'm not complaining, I'm critiquing...

Abu Dhabi

Well that is not much of a surprise. The EY tie up is already showing its benefits. Hope it works out.

EY plans to completely restructure JU and acquire a new fleet of A319s (apparently in the coming months) and AUH will not be a problem for this type, as is evident with EYs daily AUH-BEG service. So AUH will go double daily!

Well, as far as I know JAT is currently flying to Bucharest OTP, code sharing on TAROM metal ATR42-500. So Bucharest shouldn't be considered a new destination for JAT. The Bucharest to Belgrade route has been operated by Tarom for about two years?

Great news for JAT. The day A319s arrive i'll book to fly them! Can't wait. Belgrade Airport deserves JAT to survive and to do well. Finger's crossed!

Can you call Bucharest a "relaunch" where as the route is up and running since Dec 07, 2009 ?

Back then, started at 3 weekly with AT5, and I see it at 6 weekly/AT5 for Nov 2013. So yeah you can call it frequency increase on the OTP to BEG, but certainly not a "relaunch"

Sorry 777,
Beirut is a relaunch as are some other routes. Others are new.

Pedanticism aside, this is a great direction for JAT. A new fleet, connecting traffic through Belgrade and backing from a sound source, all weighs up nicely for the airline.

I wonder how Etihad's influence will filter through to inflight service..

Beirut is a relaunch but I am not sure that all of the other destinations have been served before at some point.
Exciting times for the airline. Wonder if their low cost approach will change with the backing of an well to do investor such as Etihad.

Why is JAT starting AUH flights as the loadfactor on the EY flights are below 40 to 50%?
EY is flying 40 to 50 pax on average per flight on AUH-BEG-AUH, some flights even with just 20 to 25 pax...
So what's the point to start a second daily flight on this route by JU?

From the 1992 timetable:

They at one point didnt need stops. DXB was served by the DC10.

AUH-BEG was launched a month ago, and it takes time for a route to start ''living''. I remember when JU launched DXB in 2004 - twice weekly, it had miserable LF initially, something like 20 pax. But, after 6-8 months LF improved drastically and within a year, flights went to six weekly with very healthy load factors, the highest I believe in JUs network at the time.

Considering JU's potential strategic tie-up with EY, double daily hub to hub sounds reasonable and I'm sure time will come when at least EY will deploy A332s on the route on certain days at least. Their strategy is evidently to give QR, FZ, TK and even LH to a certain extent, a hard time. My wild guess is, they will probably win sooner rather than later.

yes we know that, its being relaunched as in operated by JAT itself, any airline that returns to a market with its own service in addition to a c/s, is a relaunch or resumption of its own operation on that route.

Quoting raffik (Reply 10):

Varna is the only new one, but may have been served before too seasonally. They are also resuming Banja Luka.

Does Banja Luka have enough traffic to warrant a resumption of service?

It's on RO metal. Tarom operates an AT5 on that route. Wonder if that codeshare will go away or expanded if JAT starts flying the route as well.

Will EY send an A330 to BEG?
Jat could start long-haul flights if these new flights prove success to JU

After the 40 days of service, flight have been performing ok. On some, 50% load factor as someone mentioned earlier, on others, full to capacity.

Eventually, i do believe that 330s will be deployed, at least during peak periods.

Do you have any formal source to support Jat's own aircraft deployment on BEG to OTP beyond Oct 28 ?

Not really   But given the right connections it 'might' work. Personally i think JAT should attempt to get the rights to Belgrade-Banja Luka-Zurich flights a couple times per week.

Could not agree more. Banja Luka is a mildly ''political'' route, BUT, if connected well - and especially if JU decided to pursue 6th freedom to ZRH as adriaticflight says, it could turn into a positive zero run.

RO has AT7 as well. sure it is not just an upgrade? Don't really see the need for a daily AT5 and a daily AT7 on that route. Especially with a codeshare in place.
