Wed Jul 24, 2013 4:13 pm

I was wondering why BA have a A380 going into Manston?

BA realised how ugly it was when it landed at LHR, so have now banished it to deepest darkest Kent.

But seriously, Manston has a large and underutilised runway. A deal will have been done for a package of landing/parking fees which provides the airport with some much needed revenue and BA a few weeks of cheap training.

Multiple bumps stops and go rounds short hops to Vatry (East of Paris also with a very long and little used runway) and around again.

Training and time familiarisation.

G-XLEA is currently out stationed at Manston for these ops because its got a long runway is quiet and yet commutable by road from home base (Might even by nearer from home for some than LHR itself !)
Ground crew and handlers are also out stationed.

You really think this sort of build up could take place at LHR slots and all ?

Unsure, but two possibilities spring to mind:

1) route proving for a new MSE-LHR triple-daily A380 service to ensure Little Red doesn't jump in on the route ahead of BA

or

2) BA's given up on the 380 already and it's there to await a new owner and/or parting out. I've heard the FA unions don't like the idea of crew possibly needing to walk up and down stairs occasionally, and Walsh refused to have the 380s modified with pontoons to land at Boris Johnson's Thames Estuary airport.

How long will it be at Manston? Might pop down to see it... I love the fact that you can drive across the taxiway and stand close to the jets there!

BA does operate (by some margin) the largest fleet of double decker aircraft of any airline in the world.

Actually, Manston is quite an interesting Airport on it's own account.

Not exactly LHR, but some interesting aircraft, all the same.

I was hoping that the reference to pontoons on an A380 in the next clause might make it blindingly obvious that the entire post was a joke, as might the reference to triple daily MSE-LHR service, as might the theory that BA had given up on the 380 and it was going to MSE for a new owner or parting out, as might the bit you quoted. So, in other words, the entire post. The OP's question had already been answered so I thought it okay to take a little poke at the astoundingly inaccurate and random answers that these threads often generate.

Sounds like a very attractive commuter route! Saves you going thru traffic in London itself!

Emirates have around 36 388s in service at the moment

BA still have 52 744s in service plus this 1 388 !

Emirates won't pass BA for another few years !

I'm afraid you're just going to have to accept it. The future hasn't actually happened yet has it.

With the arrival of the first BA A380 the double decker fleet just got bigger.

'Too right,' as they say.   It was actually a 'key' fighter airfield in the Battle of Britain in 1940 - the Luftwaffe, with airfields in Northern France, could take off and be over Manston, dropping bombs, in not much more than 20 minutes - I know because my WW1-veteran father was an Army 'medic,' helping to treat the wounded from Dunkirk; but also a makeshift anti-aircraft gunner/loader. And was stationed there at the time.......

Apparently the Hurricanes/Spitfires - warned by top-secret radio intercepts - had to get off the ground in about five minutes flat, climb like hell, and hopefully get higher than the Luftwaffe guys before they arrived.......

VERY different times............

17 airframes is not in my book "quite some margin" that's what I take exception with. Quite some margin would be far more than 17.

If you haven't already got a copy of 'First Light' by Geoffrey Wellum you should get one .. it's a very interesting Spitfire read, with quite a bit based at Manston.

The numbers have already been posted and they're approximately accurate, so everyone can judge for themselves whether the margin is substantial.

I think it's pretty funny that you've taken my parody of these threads and turned it into exactly the type of pedantic, unnecessarily emotional discussion of off-topic details that I was parodying in the first place. Very well done.

But if we want to get even more pedantic about it, the post you misinterpreted to quote as a serious piece refers to the FAs not wanting to walk up and down stairs. A380s have 2 staircases, while 747s have only one. Therefore, EK has more staircases in its fleet, yes? See how this game works?  duck

The point is that given that BA operates a fleet of 52 747-400's I found your joke rather a witless one considering it was centred around 'stairs'.

It seems you missed the point of that part of the post, then. The operation of such a large 747 fleet is exactly why the reference to FAs not wanting to walk up and down stairs is as ridiculous as an A380 on pontoons. Everyone else seemed to understand that.

It's funny how BA spends vast sums of money on petrol for the A380 training. You normally hear the test pilots say after flying the aircraft that it performs exactly like it does in the simulator.

Did BA do such training flights for the 787?
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

BA needs to let the pilots fly the aircraft. CAA rules say they must do 3 landings in the aircraft before getting their licence.

that is horrible! Maybe the should do a 380 commuter circuit MSE-LHR-LGW-That proposed 4 runway one in Kent (don't bother building it first) and back? Or if you put pontoons on the thing you could try Flying Boat service to the MAT at LGA again?

I was not expecting a banal and humourless topic like an airline positioning an aircraft to trigger or require such a cryptic retort.
