UA Not The First To Blink On LAX-PDX

For all those nay-sayers that always assume that UA will be the first to blink when a new competitor launches a route.....you're wrong. VX blinked first and it's been public knowledge for months. Effective Aug 1 they will no longer run LAX-PDX nonstop. They're adding 2 additional SFO-PDX trips for a total of 3. The planes are coming from LAX-PDX.
So PDX isn't really growing at the rate that some locals would want us to believe.
Furthermore, just because DL is launching the route doesn't mean they will own it. They still have to compete with AS and UA and their deep frequent flyer base. I flew LAX-PDX two days ago on UA and got the last seat on the 4:22pm flight. This was after NOT getting a seat on the 12:31pm flight. So I wouldn't say UA is hurting on the route. Seems like they've right-sized the market.

Which is too bad, really. VX had 7am and 5pm nonstops in both directions between LAX and PDX. UA flies mainly CRJs in the market, and the first southbound flight doesn't depart until nearly 10am.

I can tell you the loads in CLE-PDX have done great this summer..

Alaska has a much better schedule....~630a, 830a, 1130a, 2p, 5p, 8p. That 5p flight is always full. I wish they'd bring back the 630a northbound LAX-PDX flight though. I liked that I could be at the office by 10a.

I honestly forgot UA flew that route. My coworker takes them occasionally, but usually routes through SFO to get more miles.

Of course they do, AS has been the entrenched incumbent carrier on the route for a number of years now. That doesn't take away from that the VX flights were timed exactly right in both directions, yet VX still pulled out.

Timed right? They offered two flights a day. Not exactly a great schedule if you finish work at, say, 1p and want to get out earlier.

Yup, prime time in both directions. Not every airline starts out with a full schedule in every market.

And after dropping ORD-PDX a couple of years ago, AA is back with two 737's replacing the two MD80s that used to fly it. They are consistenly full with the max of 150 pax.

Yes PDX is growing as fast as we want you to believe. Your math above, suggests that VX stayed even in the PDX market, which it did, pretty good for one of their newest markets.

Who ever said that? AS still owns this market, and will continue to do so.

And as UA continues to diminish non hub flying, this route will go away, it's just a matter of time. UA will also discontinue their intra-Northwest flying with OO once the last EMB-120s start retiring. The Northwest was big at one time for UA, but not any more. Just like I expect SEA-NRT will go away as DL expands their SEA gateway.

I think these routes in the West, particularly North-South California-Oregon/Washington will get a big boost when the Skywest ERJ-175s start arriving. Skywest has 40, of their 100 on order, lined up to operate for UAX. Those 40 are in additional to the 35+40 options UA has on order themselves to be operated by other Regional partners.

When the schedule first came out the flight was a daily 737-700, now it's a mix with a 737-700/800 and sometimes a 757.
