CO and AA should consider a DFW/IAH-SYD flight. The 777-200ER does have the range. Both flights will be about 8600mi, and the 777-200ER has a range 8600mi.

I don't know if there is much of a market for these flights, but if they were to originate in JFK/EWR, then they could advertise New York-Sydney service.

AA already codeshares with Qantas, so they already have codeshares out of DFW through LAX to Australia. In addition Qantas already has a flight that goes from SYD-NYC via LAX. It is also an AA codeshare.

I'm not sure about CO's Australia flights (do they have any through Continental Micronesia?)

It would be really if CO started such a flight. I think CO Mike does serve SYD, but it's really inconvinient. There are no direct flights from the USA-GUM, so you'd have to fly EWR-HNL-GUM-SYD or IAH-HNL-GUM-SYD.

The 777-200ER Range: 14,260km

Although the plane could fly there non-stop, there are prevailing winds, and ETOPS. The routing, Great Circle, would place the 777-200ER flying right through a no-fly zone for 180min ETOPS. Even with 207minutes, it is close. What if there was a delay? They would really be pushing it. Wait for the A340-500/777-200LR to see that type of service.

Qantas has stated that once it gets it's new aircraft, they will serve DFW.

With the winds, only the 777-200LR could operate non-stop. Another issue is the ETOPS 240 approval.

I would not expect CO to start this service anytime soon, even with the 777-200LR. Australia is a very competitive marketplace, where yields are extremely low due to the long distance of the flight. The poor yield situation drove CO out of the HNL-SYD market a few years back. I don't think there has been an signifcant change in the market composition to encourage CO to try this once again. Look for IAH expansion to asian points such as KIX, SIN (a real stretch), TPE, and SEL.

Arguably more service to Austrailia and New Zealand would be good. Preferably that is not from LAX/SFO. However as Mitchell Gant stated it is not an overly high yield market and highly competitive with Star (UA/NZ) and Qantas flying several daily 747s. For an airline like CO there more profitable routes that could be started up with exisiting and future 777 aircraft. Plus ETOPS is a big issue on that route as well.... which would be an issue until the 777 got ETOPS 240.

With CO doing their huge European expansion, I can't see them returning to the low yeild market or NZ/OZ.

Once AA settles their contract with their pilots AA will order the 777-200LR and serve the route 3 to 4 times a week with Qantas serving it the other days with their own 777-200LR....And Possible ORD but that might be a stretch for the 777-200LR

I heard that Continental will first do New York to Osaka, Seoul, Taipei, and possibly Shanghai at a rate of about one route per year. I've never heard of anymore Asian service out of IAH. But I would like ot see service to Kona from Houston, because Kona only has service from Los Angeles and San Francisco, and TWA and American control the Midwest-Maui market.
