Collision On Ramp At LAX

Wed Jul 31, 2013 7:13 pm

My cousin plane spotting at LAX reports seeing a 777 push back from Tom Bradley terminal into A321 or A320. He saw it in passing, did not get the airline names. 777 and A321 tails were both damaged in incident. He thinks the 777 was a Star Alliance aircraft, not sure of who A321 belonged too. I am more details will follow.

Well if it was the left side, American doesnt have airbus, so it must be the right side of tbit into either VX or F9

The OP mentioned a 321. Who else besides US operates the 321 at LAX?

Star Alliance 777s at LAX today include B-2032 (Air China 77W) which, according to flightaware, has been in the air for two minutes, N794UA which pushed back a few minutes ago, and B-16701 (Eva Air 77W) which hasn't landed yet.

I don't know that much about TBIT, but I assume UA doesn't use it, so that would leave Air China and as we all know, flightaware isn't the most reliable so that could be it. The NH 77W isn't at LAX and SQ doesn't have their's there either.

I asked my cousin to make sure the details he remembered seeing and he stated it was a 777 and an A320. He was in the terminal when it happened. The livery he described on the 777 was that of a Star Alliance aircraft. I have been checking for any news out of LAX on this.

I just spent nearly two hours at TBIT north with my company aircraft. There weren't any Star Alliance triple 7s on that side today during that period.

Could it have been a UA 777 into a DL A320 from opposite sides of the alley? Or UA 777 into a UA A320?

This doesn't make sense to me.. He saw this only in passing, could not name either airline, yet noticed damage to both tails?

As rabid as the Press is lately for airline "scares", and "disasters", you'd think something like this would have been reported by now.

It could have been UA because sUA does have two Star Alliance 772ER. N218UA is flying IAD-NRT and was not in LAX at all today but N794UA which is currently in the air is flying LAX-NRT but is several hours behind schedule. I do not know the reason for the delay of flight 802 out of LAX but United did in fact have a sUA Star Alliance 772ER at LAX today. But if the tail of the UA plane was damaged as it has been suggested I highly doubt that the aircraft would be in the air on its way to NRT and as it stands right now UA fligt 802 is only 1:40 minutes behind schedule. Are you sure there was damage done to the plane or could it have appeared that two planes tails were touching simply from the position your cousin was standing in?

Yeah, that's what strikes me as odd. The news media is out for blood in the airline industry. Surely something would've been reported by now.

Is it perhaps possible that, because of his viewing angle, the aircraft appeared to collide but actually did not? If he saw it in "passing," what led him to believe there was a collision and/or damage? Were there emergency vehicles around?

I opened this thread to see what I thought to be a legitimate incident.

Guess knot.

UA802/N794UA was late due to a late inbound turn from NRT. It showed no more than about 2.5 hours on the deck, so that's not time for a serious check-up.

I did a search in FlightAware (I know, reliability issues...) on every 777 tail in Star Alliance livery that has it's photo here in A.net. All are accounted for, either not touching LAX today or on-time, UA excepting as above. So if the report is true, then somebody has a new one that nobody here has photo'd and posted yet.

And the 321 LAX operators (US and AC) don't show any cancellations for PHX, PHL, CLT or YYZ. (TA didn't show one arriving LAX today.)

I have to say, I'm skeptical about the report. Maybe the wrong alliance and/or A/C types. But still no news report on a bump at LAX today.

Not possible.... UA and DL do not use TBIT at LAX; they have their own terminals.

AC uses T2 at LAX not TBIT

UA uses T7 which is nowhere close to TBIT

I mean no disrespect but this sounds a little muddled.
Your cousin was "plane spotting" and yet didn't get EITHER airline?
I don't understand how he saw it happen, and yet didn't recognize either tail?
Sorry, I'm just a bit confused.

This would be a good time to lock this thread mods. Report is based off of a cousin to a friend's brother who happened to be plane-spotting at LAX while on the go and clearly saw two planes bump but didn't care to stop and find out more. I throw the BS flag on this thread, hate to say!
