How Will This End?

Sat Oct 28, 2000 6:49 pm

Hi.

As many of you know, Airbus are making the VLA (?) with a seating for approx 600 passengers. Boeing and Airbus are, as far as I know, going to build a 800 seat airplane in the near future.

But what will pilots feel about being responsable for so many lives? If a 800 seat aircraft chrashes it would be a tragic disaster.

Still, there is the need for bigger and bigger airplanes, wich means that the skies will become crowded, meaning there is a bigger risk of a mid air collision. And to make matters worse, What if there was a mid air collision between two 800 seat aircrafts?

As the topic says; How will this end?

Wouldn't the skies be less crowded if there are 800 seat aircrafts flying around compared to 100-400 seat aircrafts. One plane could carry the capacity of 2 747's.

People said the same thing about the 747 when they heard about it.

Actually, the 800 seat A3XX is the same aircraft as the 585 seat A3XX, except it would be in a high density configuration, no spas, shops, etc. Just 100% steerage.

IMO, the 800 seat A3XX will be the only A3XX. Airlines are not going to forgo revenue seats for shops and spas. Maybe I'm wrong....

Anyway, larger a/c will help somewhat with the air-congestion problem, but I think crash protection/prevention is going to have to become a higher prority than it is now, otherwise the public may turn against VLAs.

Just my thoughts.

There will most likely be the recreational area on all 3XXs as these will be on the bottom level and have no windows. I doubt airlines will be allowed to put passengers down there. The only difference between 585 and 800 is the same difference as the 300 seat 744 and the 550 seat 744, i.e. seat pitch, and the amount of business and first call seats, whcich detract from the amount of streerage. As far as crashing goes, I have always wondered why they put first class passengers in the front. In most crashes (AA Little Rock being an exception) the front of the aircraft gets hit the hardest. (head on collisions, ditches etc.) So basically the best paying passengers have the least probability of survival...

The first version of the A3XX, the A3XX-100, will seat in typical configuration, without any spas, squash rooms, and whatever else, 550 pax. Emirates will seat some pax more (about 570, IIRC) in their A3XX.

The next version, the A3XX-200 will seat 650 pax in a typical 3-class-layout.

If any spas, bars, or whatever will be build in, this will mean less than 550 pax. On the other side, a 1-class layout for domestic flights could seat up to 800 pax.
