BA B787 Dreamliner Flies Over Rolls Royce Factory

Thu Aug 08, 2013 10:19 am

BA flew their Dreamliner over the Rolls Royce engine factory this morning, accompanied by a couple of slightly older veterans of RR power. You won't see this very often!!

I guess the last flyover would be when Airbus did a similar flyby with an RR-equipped A380 a few years back now.

Nice videos.

I always enjoy little shows like this...feel good stuff

Just like the mornings at work when the F22 Raptors take off from HNL and go straight up vertical (like this morning)

Good vibes

Indeed. It's good for the workers at the factory to see the results of their hard work taking to the skies. Rolls-Royce makes some incredible engines. The Trent 1000 is no exception.

Since when?

The aircraft is called the 787 Dreamliner.

Great video and highlights how quiet the 787 can be You hear the Merlin quite clearly, but hardly anything from the 787.

The "Dreamliner" bit is unofficial, so you use it or not, every one can decide for themselves. The 787 bit is official.

I thought Boeing had dropped the customer designation number for the 787. So G-ZBJA is simply either a Boeing 787 8 or a Boeing 787 8 Dreamliner. Boeing seems to prefer the latter.

If you follow this link, on the Boeing website, it is referred to as the "787 Dreamliner". So yes, it is official.

Watched the flyover this morning and even though the Spitfire was on the far side of the 787 it was the throaty roar of the Merlin which was all you could hear.

Flew right over my house. Very impressive, as I didn't know it was coming and it flew low enough to identify the tailfin. Until this came into view I assumed it was a TOM example on approach to East Midlands Airport.

Is this the same factory that Boeing flew the a/c over when they sent it to the airshow a year or so ago?

Yes it is. I remember the day and thinking how elegant it looked and how quiet it was. It was a lot lower too!

According to GINFO (The UK CAA's database for all G- registered aircraft), the 787 is listed as 787-8.

(For the benefit of anyone in doubt about the 'Dreamliner' thing, it's listed under 'Popular Name'.

Compared to Boeing 777-336ER G-STBA:

I believe the Spitfire was the Rolls-Royce PR Mk19 and as such is a Griffon powered example - that aside, the Spit was MUCH louder than the 787. I was watching at EMA and it was the sound of the Spit that first alerted us the fact the 787 was coming back for another pass!!!!

As others have stated, it's nice to see this sort of tribute, both for BA and RR.

Quoting hotplane (Reply 4):

Whether or not one wants to use 'Dreamliner' is up to them. Boeing market the term Dreamliner, so it is an official term. No need to make a post that offers no contribution towards the thread, particularly when you are nitpicking, when the OP wasn't wrong in the first place.

Quoting justloveplanes (Reply 15):

Actually, it is not painted on the BA 787's, however they are still Dreamliners.

Technically, you'd be incorrect. All 787s delivered to date are 787-8s. No customer codes.

Maybe BA quietly dropped "Dreamliner" after all the recent negative publicity?

There's nothing quite like the sound of the Merlin. I love it. Never heard a Griffon but I would imagine its even better.

Airfleets lists customer codes for some aircraft but not others, If Boeing are dropping customer codes for 787's will they be phasing them out for other models ?

I was under the impression it was to do with less customisation/greater standardisation for the 787 compared to previous models...
