Ummmmm... A failed airport in an area that isn't exactly likely to be highly valuable land to develop either.

Not exactly a great deal.

I suggest they offer this in real estate magazines worldwide with the text heading

GET REAL

The place is worth a symbolic € and not a cent more. Still, anyone buying the place would be in trouble before the ink on the contract has dried.

It was "pecado en la ciudad" to build this place and to waste money on it.

Could be used as a storage/dump airport Nevada-style? The place is hot and dry, few rain, very long runway and not that far from MAD. By the way, are there in Europe these kind of storage airports?

Believe it or not, there is one in Spain, Teruel Airport, Teruel. I never heard of that and came across checking the move, ments this morning finding that the 2 744s from Air Cargo Germany have been ferried there from HHN resp FRA. for storage.

Teruel is a dedicated storage airport. Amazing. That kind of business is taken from Ciudad Real as well....

There are others as well, Chateauroux in France, the English have some former RAF fields that specialize in scrapping, someone tried that in Ahlhorn AB in Northern germany once. Pau in France or was it Lourdes is an Airbus facility...

becoming big business.

In the UK, you have Kemble, Bournemouth, Manston, Southend, Lasham, and to some extent St Athan.

They also do storage/parting.

Sounds manageable... we all chip in $50 and make it the 'A.net Memorial Field' or something of the like.

No, one € without any debt. That would be the deal and that contains a lot of risk for any potential buyer.

I'll have to see if we have some discretionary spending money sitting around and see if Paul will let us buy it . Though I have a funny feeling NIMBYs will burn our airport to the ground with all the classic jets making a racket    .

It's a shame to see an airport just sitting around to waste. I know Spain's economy isn't the best right now, but were the projections just crazy high for the passenger count? Or did the economy really hurt the airport that much?

Imagine the money wasted too on what was obviously a totally inaccurate feasibility study.

Again it proves how random some business decisions really are. Can we presume this was mostly EU money?

It seems to have had airline backing which you would have thought would have given it a good kick-off.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

None of it was EU money. It was all PRIVATE MONEY. It's absolutely hilarious to see some of the comments on the daily mail website, deriding the EU for this "waste", "point out one single thing the have done". The EU has opened borders, allowed the UK to benefit from a relatively strong pound, weak Euro, made those Spanish and Greek holidays cheap and easy. The EU has removed trade barriers allowing Asian and US manufacturers to open factories, employing thousands (Toyota, Honda, etc) and made that nice BMW or Merc much more affordable than it would otherwise be.
Now, much of that money has probably been "bailed out" by the Spanish and EU tax payers since, but it was originally a private project, not a government one.
Next flights: MAN-ORK-LHR(EI)-MAN(BD); MAN-LHR(BD)-ORK (EI); DUB-ZRH-LAX (LX) LAX-YYZ (AC) YYZ-YHZ-LHR(AC)-DUB(BD)

Finally a place to really put all the whacky airliners.net ideas to the test!

With the a.net boarding process it will take 11 minutes to turn them bad boys around!
And someone call O'Leary! Tell him we got a conveyor belt runway ready to shoot those FR 737s right into the sky.

The problem is that 50% of those here on A.net want FR to fly to their airport and 50% not.......

Not only that, it made house prices in Spain go up as all those British holiday makers wanted to buy a house in Spain, making it impossible for some locals to buy one of their own.

This airport featured in Pedro Almodóvar last movie (Los amantes pasajeros). The fun bit of the movie was that one of the characters was someone who tricked people in investing into the airport Cuidad Real and was was on his way to Mexico flee from prosecution.

Given the huge debt and zero market prospects, the airport may not even be worth a symbolic Euro...

Nothing to do with the economy, the airport would have failed anyway, as it was a political pet project built on an unrealistic "business case", real-estate speculation, etc. There was no true market for it, with or without a good economy.

Quoting babybus (Reply 15):

Not a single cent - just more of the usual EU-bashing there. Mainly local authorities and [now-bankrupt & bailed-out] regional savings banks. Don't worry, no UK tax money has been wasted there, just the savings of Spanish grandmas.

Now that could be an idea - rent it out to producers as a movie location - given that the scrapping business seems to be taken by Teruel (which I have just learned). Or what about general aviation, getting a flight school to set up there?

Ciudad Real doesn't do too badly for transport connections - it has a stop on the high speed railway line between Madrid and Seville and an international airport. I once went there for the weekend and we left early out of boredom - it's just a small town with nothing to see. I think there was a plan at some point to build a huge casino complex and to try to create a sort of European Las Vegas, but I don't know if that ever go off the ground.
