It's Official: AA Sending The 777 To SCL

Wed Aug 14, 2013 2:36 pm

....but with a curve-ball: instead of deploying the 777 on the long-rumored MIA-SCL route, AA is sending it from DFW!!!!!

I'm in absolute shock, I have been waiting for this upgauge for years!!!

According to the source:

American Airlines from 21NOV13 is introducing Boeing 777-200ER operation on Dallas/Ft. Worth – Santiago de Chile route, replacing Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. Planned operational schedule as follow.

AA945 DFW2125 – 0950+1SCL 777 D
AA940 SCL2310 – 0605+1DFW 777 D

My guess is that similar to DFW-EZE, this will be a seasonal upgauge, but I am so happy to see this! I have lived in both DFW and SCL in the past and such developments run dear to my heart.

Yeap. It's already loaded on aa.com/ but it looks like its seasonal. 2014 Jul flights show AA945/940 with a 763. Let's pray that it goes permanent.

An AA 777 in SCL is nothing new. AA flew the 777 MIA-SCL several years ago. DFW was a 767-300.

As a trivia point: wasn't DFW-SCL AA's last MD-11 route?

I expect to see more 777s in South America - particularly SCL and GIG - once the 777s are reconfigured. Once AA gets the 777s reconfigured into a higher-density layout with a competitive J product (i.e., how the 777s should have been configured 6-7 years ago), I could definitely see AA doing a lot more 777 flying to Europe in the northern summer and then rotating down to South America for the northern winter.

AA will deploy the 777 on the DFW-SCL route until the end of March. On a side note, AA will upgauge the DFW-LIM route to a 763 from 21NOV13 through 07JAN14.

Indeed. Here is N757AN arriving at SCL during 2003:

IIRC, the last time AA operated the 777 into SCL was during 2007.

It's a bigger deal than one might think for several reasons:

1. For at least the past 5 years, AA has continually shelved plans to up-gauge MIA-SCL from a 767-300 in the northern winter during peak season in Chile, but this never materialized, despite the fact that AA's Latin America performance has been consistently strong YoY and the Chilean economy has been stable.

2. The DFW-SCL route is a slam dunk for cargo, so-so for passenger volume. The fact that AA is deploying the bird with FCL seats is pretty big here.

3. I'm still surprised as to why they chose DFW over MIA: can anyone answer this!? A few years ago, AA tried to add 3x weekly flights on DFWSCL to go up to 10x weekly in high season, but pulled these fairly quickly.

AA has always been a fan of frequency. This winter AA is going double daily on MIA-SCL-MIA. Both will be operated by a 763. This provides more overall capacity over an upgauge to a 772 with the added benefit of providing more options to passengers.

Won't the 77E not have any F class anymore?

It will be several years before the conversion is complete.

SCL is the big hole on UA'S deep South American network.

Yes, AA's last MD-11 international flight was SCL-DFW during October, 2001.

Perhaps UA is waiting for Chile to become a member of the U.S. VWP. Also, DL has indicated in the Chilean media that the carrier plans to increase capacity on the ATL-SCL route in the very near future...

I bet GRU will get a downgrade from a 777 to 767 soon as well

AA will operate the MIA-GRU route 4x daily with the 777. The DFW-GRU route will operate daily with the 77W. The JFK-GRU route will operate 12x weekly, (77W daily and 777 5x weekly). On December 16, AA will launch LAX-GRU daily with the 777.
