It looks like a 777-300 with 4 engine mounts!! Hehe, just joking, I must admit that it looks better than the 340-2/300. Hey Airbus, I'm waiting to fly on it......

Hi Jeremiah
Thanks. I am also waiting for the first SR 340-600 to fly it. It does not only look damn long, like Amir said, it is damn long. It will be the longest airliner.

I am just so sad that air france will not buy some of these, just because of the engines...

Ditto the DAMN long part.....i think its percieved to be even longer because they only added a fuselage plug forward of the wing and not aft.
I wonder what the wheel base between the nose and main gears are and how it compares to the 777-300. Some airports had to modify taxi-ways to accomodate the 773, I wonder if they will have to do the same for the 346?

Looks like the center-gear isn´t in use there. I heard it will have 3 axis compared to 2 on the other 340`s.

Almost as weird as the 737 with the winglets.

Man, that bird is huge!!!!
You can really see it here the thin wing airbus uses compare to the large one boeing uses.

Future_Pilot, orders: At the moment there are, as I know, more than 70 orders for the A 340-500/600 (the 500 is a bit shorter with more range, -500 about 17'000 km, -600 14'000 km).
I only know that Swissair has ordered 11 340-600 (inkl leased aircrafts) at the moment and will get the first planes in 2002.

It looks out of proportion. Thats wierd that they only added plugs to the front. Probably to avoid tail strikes. Is the wing the same as on the -200,-300?

Fly-by-Pilot: This is not right, they added frames before AND after the wing. It is a new wing. The "old" 330/340 wing has a span of 60.30 meters (wing area 361.60 squaremeters) the 340-500/600 has a wingspan of 63.45 meters (439.40 squaremeters).

Someone more familiar with the specifics can correct me, but I'll try to clear up a few questions that have come up:

Wing: It is neither the A342/3's wing nor a brand-new one. From my understanding, Airbus inserted a wing-root extension to increase span, area, and wing-tank volume. This leads to gaining the desired range/payload requirements while minimizing costs by not adding a new wing.

Orders:

For the A340-500:
Air Canada: 5
Emirates: 6
ILFC: 8
Singapore: 5
Total: 24

For the A340-600:
Aerolineas Argentinas: 6
EgyptAir: 2
Flightlease (Swissair): 9
ILFC: 5 (2 to Swissair, 3 to Cathay)
Lufthansa: 10
Virgin Atlantic: 10
Undisclosed: 5 (AI, leased to China Eastern)
Total: 47

Program Total: 71

Hope this helps!

I hope this doesn't turn out like the 757-300 did.

The plane looks alright. I didn't realize that Airbus was that far along with it?

When is going to be completely finished and ready to fly?

Most elegant looking plane I've ever seen.

And yes, the tail looks pretty small..... but for such a long plane, a big fin is not needed.

I believe that Airbus is awaiting the completion of the Rolls-Royce Trent 500 flight test program now going on with a modified A340-300 that is owned by Airbus.

Airbus is expected to "officially" unveil the A340-600 probably late January 2001 with the test flights set to begin in (probably) early March 2001. I believe that Airbus wants to get JAA/FAA certification on the A340-600 by the middle of 2002, because both Swissair and Virgin Atlantic wants their planes some time in the summer of 2002.

Well once again Aibus has outdone itself, and come up with an even uglier "aircraft." What a POS that looks like! Yuk! I think there would have to be some emergency exits there, unless those brilliant airbus computers open the roof in an emergency, because we all know those computers aren't capable of much else!

Does anyone else get the feeling the tail was borrowed from the prototype A340??

Well Airbus, I hope you have as much sucess with this aircraft as Boeing has has with the 753 and 739!!

Yeah, I would have to say that the Airbus people are pretty obvious on this thread. This plane is hideous, at least without the paint, engines, nose-cone, etc.

The fin does look a bit small, and with the longer fuselage, I thought you would need a larger fin to control it. Seems rather backwards to me when the moment arm gets longer, you need less force to control it.

BTW, neither the 753 nor 739 are failures. Since they are brand new offerings (especially the 739) and have probably already made a profit based on their miniscule development costs, I think people are way off the radar to think that they are "failures." How many original 737s had sold in the first year of production? (Very very few.)

Even though it doesnot have everything sorted out, it is the most beautiful plane i have every seen in my life.
It is under test so im sure you can say the tail is small but im sure airbus knows what they're doing.
Are there going to be wingletts?

I must say this plane, along with 744, is one of the comeliest I've seen. Incidentally, the 346 looks much better with engines attached (and painted!) - AI has a CGI image on their site. The extended neck and small engine/plane size ratio give the plane a touch of swanlike grace.

Gotta say, it looks pretty awful! With the engines installed, it will be reminiscent of a widebodied DC8-73!

Any bets on the number of tailstrikes and pod-drags they have?

BTW, this aircraft will be a little bit longer, than the B773, but not much.

It will be longer than the 773: 340-600: 75.33 meters; 777-300: 73.79 (for Americans: the difference is about 5 feet). It will have winglets similar to the 340-200/300 winglets.

No offense to anyone, but it looks like they welded several airframe pieces together from ex-military planes(The several shades of green), and added wings taken from the junkyard(No engines).

After looking at the picture closely, some comments:

1. The tail was painted first due to weight balance considerations. Note that when Boeing builds their jets the tail is always painted first for this reason.

2. Note that because the fuselage sections for the A340-500/600 series come from several different manufacturers, that's why the primer paint is of a slightly different shade of green.

3. The center wheel is not lowered because the plane right now is still way lighter than the final configuration. After all, the engines are yet to be fitted to the plane, and very likely the interior fittings have yet to be done.

4. I don't expect stability problems due to the A340-600 using the same vertical tail as the A340-200/300 series. After all, we are talking about a plane that has full fly-by-wire controls with multiple backup systems, which means the plane can have "relaxed stability" and the plane's stability is controlled by computer control of the moving surfaces of the plane.

As for the first operational use of the A346, I think it'll likely be VS' second daily flight between LHR and LAX. VS is flying an A343 right now on this route but will likely replace it with the A346 once the plane becomes available in the summer of 2002.

The first destinations operated by SR with their A346 will be medium haul destinations for training purposes, just as the first A330-200 was used to CDG for example.

Expect the following "real" destinations as the first ones, that will be served: Singapore, Hong Kong, New York, perhaps also Bangkok and Mumbai.

With regards to the fin size, I would imagine it's not too much of a problem.

It seems that for AI aircraft the longer the fuse the smaller the tail has to be.

For example, the 332 tail is larger than that of the 333 due to the reduced fuse length.

Also, computers help.

The current A340´s have only two wheels on the center-gear and I heard the 340-600 will have two extra wheels. So correction to my first post: The 340-600 will probably have two axis ( 4 wheels ) on the center-gear.

The finn is even smaller than the one of the 330/340-200/300. The height of a -200/300 is: 17.88 meters; the height of a -500/600 is only 17.70 meters (difference more than a half a foot). The longer the plane the smaller the finn can be (not indefinitly of course). Longer aircrafts have a better lever arm.

I know that planes commonly look like this-my 5 year old cousin is here, and he called it a "Army plane" when he saw it.

PS: When did I say that Boeings don't look like this?
PPS: I think that it'd be funny if this plane(with all the correct parts installed i.e. jets) suddenly pulled up to a gate at say LHR for Virgin with just the tail painted. I wonder how many people would switch to BA, or another airline
