New UA TransPac Route - SFO-CTU

Wed Aug 28, 2013 11:10 pm

United is due to announce a new Transpac service from SFO on Thursday.

According to its media advisory, UA will be the first US airline serving the route.

Any guesses?

MEL-SFO? Given the downgrade from B744 to B777 on SFO-SYD and LAX-SYD?

Guangzhou is my guess. I think UA could make it work with a 787 - and if any U.S. hub/gateway could support it, it would be San Francisco. Or possibly Auckland.

SFO-Ganghzou on a 787, But I am wondering if there are other new 787 routes being considered too, like out of EWR and IAH and ORD.

They will get their 8th 787 next month. I don't know that they'll announce too many more 787 routes given that they will only have (most likely) nine a/c by the end of this year. They are currently serving NRT from LAX and DEN, LOS from IAH and PVG from LAX. I'd think they'd need a total of at least ten (to account for a spare) to launch a new long haul route.

I am going with CTU. There was talk at the Fortune Global Fourm this past summer about United starting a route to SFO. My guess also is that it will be on a 787.

It is not TPE as it is already bookable on UA.

SFO-AKL? Just guessing here. It makes sense from a connectivity standpoint, but I don't know if the market is big enough for both UA and NZ service.

I guess it would be either AKL or some cities in China.
What do you guys think about ICN? Is there any possibilities that SFO-ICN will be switched to the 787s, or any other new flights to ICN?

SFO-TPE was a long standing route, it wouldn't be new.

I think that SFO-SZX or SFO-CAN are decent bets.

Doubt it would be AKL as that would void the codeshare agreement with NZ.

UA codeshares on NZ between the US and New Zealand, NZ codeshares on UA between the US and Australia.

Is there a rule that says that UA and NZ can't both fly the same route and code share on each other's flights? That's like DL and AF both flying ATL-CDG or MSP-CDG.

It's slightly different as NZ withdrew from LAX-SYD and LAX-HNL, while UA withdrew from LAX-AKL. To my knowledge the full text of the codeshare agreement has never been released.

Don't think they will fly to AKL after the balls up they made when they tried to go for Huston the other year. some people say until wheels touch down on tarmac then it won't happen..

The may look at SFO-AKL-MEL and make their LAX-SYD-MEL a LAX terminator. Reducing from 744 to 777 on the LAX-SYD may have increased passengers loads whereby they feed LAX-MEL passengers to SFO.

Won't be SZX when they have HKG right there. Transferring from HKG to Shenzhen via ferry with no need to clear immigration in HKG works just fine to get to SZX.

Probably will be CAN or CTU.

Why does it have to be from SFO?    I'm still waiting for IAH-AKL!

My guess is is actually MNL. It's a huge hole for UA's TPAC network from CONUS, outside AKL.

I'd guess CTU also. It make sense as CTU is a large financial center, and SFO is the financial center of the west. CTU has also become a high tech center within China, with Intel, Dell, Oracle, Symantec and other silicon valley mainstays setting up offices in CTU recently.

Also interestingly CTU had a large paid advertisement spread in the past UA in-flight magazine. Hardly compelling but I thought it was interesting a Chinese city took out a paid advertisement in a flight magazine for an airline that doesn't yet serve the city.

Probably not as they say "first US airline" whereas MEL would make them the first airline.

That said, I think MEL non-stop and terminating SYD-MEL is a real possibility in the future as more 787s arrive.

That would make a lot of sense, but I think that CTU could be a good add as well. Either way, I see both happening sooner or later.

I would really like to see a IAH, DEN, ORD or EWR service with either UA or NZ.

NZ has SFO well covered especially with the two additional 77Ws on order enabling SFO to go 77W daily

But not direct non-stop from SFO. Having said that, there is no need for UA to ply this route with their own metal as their alliance and codeshare partner NZ already does.

SFO-CTU is 6870 miles, about the same distances as SFO-HKG. Its also CA's third hub.

I guess they see enough premium demand to justify overflying PEK, but I don't view serving CTU with a ton of urgency. AC isn't about to start it, neither will AA. DL could from NRT, but not as a US nonstop.

Does anyone have O&D PDEW stats for SFO-CTU and SJC-CTU? This will give us some idea of how much of overall CTU demand is going to be connections.

Interesting article on the growing number of airlines that are launching service to inner China....CTU is specifically mentioned.

http://centreforaviation.com/analysi...-chinese-cities-with-the-787-87000

"Now United Airlines looks set to be the first North American carrier to introduce non-stop service to secondary cities, with CEO Jeff Smisek telling local media that its Boeing 787s will open cities like Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an and Wuhan."

Keep in mind China's "Go West" economic policy has seen many companies and industries leave the coast and move inland in search of lower cost and more space. Things like low taxes and other incentives are seeing both Western and Chinese firms set up shop.

The Chengdu metropolis in particular is looking to become financial capital and along with other inland cities like Chongqing have become large cargo export markets (eg all the Apple products from Foxconn).

Such new service could give United a nice first move advantage and further build its strong footprint in China.

SFO-GUAM (787) Guam is the only hub and largest US territory with no flight to the Mainland US

SFO-MNL (787) would be a winner also, as a former USA commonwealth (1898-1946) lots of pax VFR and OFW's to almost every city in the USA and Canada.

It's CTU...Actually CTU has a surprsingly large Silicon Valley company base. For example, Intel has one of the largest chip factory in Chengdu. So I hope this route goes well.

Now it will be the 8th long-haul international route of CTU:

CTU-FRA by CA
CTU-AMS by KLM
CTU-YVR by 3U
CTU-MEL by 3U
CTU-LHR by BA
CTU-DOH by QR
CTU-AUH by EY
CTU-SFO by UA

I was about to post the same thing, this is a route that would not be possible with an A330 from Seattle or a 777 from LAX. There are similar potential routes both in China and India.

I'm not going to speculate on what the possible route or routes could be ill wait for the actual announcement. But what I have noticed is most people believe this new destination will be served by the 787. So my question is how many 787's both 8 and perhaps 9's will UA take delivery of in 2014? With all the routes that have and will go 787 this year and next year UA does have a quite a few spare 772ER's, so will some of these routes perhaps LAX-NRT or LAX-PVG go back to the 772ER to free up some 787's or will UA have enough 787 frames on hand in 2014 to launch whatever this new route might be with the 787?

press release confirms 787. wanna see how long the route will need to mature before going daily. the route is a real game changer since US airlines are no longer stuck in the PEK/PVG mentality.
