TWA DC-9-15-how Far West

TWA operated a fleet of short Douglas DC-9s from 1965(to replace Lockheed 749A Constellations) to being retired around 1978-1979.How far west did TWA operate DC-9s,not much west past St.Louis or Kansas City.They were mostly operated in the Ohio valley region between the northeast to St.Louis and Chicago. I know they flew from St/Louis to Atlanta visa Nashville,In 1975 I spotted one in TPA.At that time St.louis to Florida was mostly 727s and maybe a 707-131B.You never saw a TWA DC-9 in California.

I believe ICT was as far west as any sked service went, not sure on that?

I rode those DC-9's many times! Good memories!

Those 9's were real work horses for TW. I believe they had 20 total order
and had one accident with N1063T on approach into DAY in 67 mid-air with a Barron

Of course, DC-9s came back into the fleet with the purchase of Ozark in 1986. I'd need to check the OAG, but I recall they mainly stayed back East.

They stayed east of the Rockies, about as far west as they went was OKC/ICT/TUL/AUS/SAT.

For a while there were (pure-jet) -331's ops out of TPA in that time period -78-79. I think the last ones I ever saw in ops were at TPA in that time period.


I never recall seeing the TW -9's out west in those days.

I would agree. I checked the 260 photos of TWA DC-9s in the A.net database, and all were taken east of the Rockies, except for those who ended their lives in Victorville, CA.

I remember flying one out of AMA while in the Air Force back in 1971.
Qualified on Concorde/B707/B720/B727/B737/B747/B757/B767/B777/DC-8/DC-9/DC-10/A319/A320/A330/MD-88-90

Are you sure they've never been to ABQ? I remember seeing DC-9-14/15's in either TWA or Continental markings when I was a child in the sixties. I know TTA (eventually Texas International) operated the short 9s as well, but I also remember seeing a major trunk carrier fly them in the Albuquerque as well.

TWA DC-9 westbound flight routings from June 1, 1968 timetable when all 19 were all in service (one was written off in 1967). Most flights daily; some weekend variations. I used code BWI but the code then was BAL.

Did any of the major carriers based east of the Rockies (AA, UA, EA, DL, BN, NW, TW) fly any of their 1st-generation twin jets (Caravelle, 1-11, DC-9) out west?

UA - Caravelle never used on western routes.

AA - BAC 1-11 not used west of Texas/Oklahoma based on a couple of timetables.

BN - BAC 1-11 same as AA. And when BN retired the 1-11s their only destinations west of DEN were SEA/PDX (and SFO/LAX but only to South America), and the Texas-SEA/PDX routes were well beyond 1-11 range.

EA - DC-9 not used in the west as far as I recall, at least not the early ones. And in those days EA didn't have many western routes. STL-SEA/PDX were the first in 1967 and the 727 was used on those initially.

DL - can't see any early DC-9 routes west of Dallas, and DL's few west coast destinations then were mostly nonstops from ATL and DAL using DC-8s.

NW - didn't have any 1st-generation twinjets until their 1986 merger with Republic, and from then on the DC-9s they inherited were widely used in the western U.S. as they had been by Republic and predecessors.

TW - DC-9 not used in the west.

When DL started DAL-PHX in 1969 and for several years thereafter, DC-9-32s were assigned to the route.

At one time ICT was the furthest west, but I believe AMA came along later for the DC-9. I remember growing up a TWA brat in STL in the 60's and 70's the Douglas was a regular sight at STL, with tails from TW, OZ, DL, EA, SO and AL gracing the ramp at Lambert..

What makes it even MORE sad for me than usual was that this aircraft was LESS than 2 months old... You just know that back in those days, passengers felt safer when they entered an aircraft, and it was not dirty or stained. The irony of it all.

Didn't a DC-9 with a western sort of name go down at around the same age? a year or so earlier?

There was a Hughes Airwest DC-9 that collided with an F4 on June 6, 1971.

But, around the time of the TWA DC-9 .... an Allegheny DC-9 collided with a Piper Cherokee, on Sept 9, 1969, or a Piedmont B727 with a Cessna 310 on July 19, 1967.

Many were starting to doubt the feasibility of the "see and be seen" concept of traffic separation in the era.

Or perhaps you are thinking of the West Coast Airlines DC-9 on October 1, 1966. Not a collision, but a crash, the first for a DC-9.

The DC-9 that operated TW 553 only had 304 hours on it, according to the NTSB crash report.

TW flew a single daily PVD-PIT in the early 80s using a baby 9. I think it was during the 1981-82 timeframe. PVD didn't last very long on TW's route map unfortunately.
