I agree - when I flew on a DL 777 (April 2000, ATL-MIA) I found it a bit cramped, and the "cool controls" of the seats (the lumbar support, I think) didn't work at all...

CO and AF were smart to configure their 777's in a 3-3-3 configuration. Although there are 2 seats in every row that are more than 1 seat away from an aisle opposed to one, being in that middle seat in the 5 seat row is pure hell. Trust me, I spent 10 hours in that seat.

if its 2-5-2 then your no more than 1 seat away except if your right in the middly where your 2 seats away, thats 1 person per row that is 2 seats away from the aisle. If its 3-3-3 configeration the window seat passengers are 2 away from the aisle so 2 people per row are 2 seats away from the aisle.

An the A340, there is no problem because the configuration is 2-4-2 and your never anymore than a seat away from the aisle.

BA`s 777 also have 3-3-3 economy class layout. Although I haven`t flown on a 777, I think the 2-5-2 is a better solution, because it`s only if the flight is very full that you have to use the middle seat. And in that configuration, only one seat is two seats away from the aisle. But I do understand that it`s not so cool to be stuck in the center seat, but as a whole, to me the 2-5-2 configuration makes more sense. But I think that the majority of airlines operating the 777 use the 3-3-3 layout. What`s even worse, Thai have a ten- abreast 3-4-3 layout..

All of DL's new generation seats (777,737NG,764) are pretty miserable as far as comfort goes, but relief is not far away. We will be replacing all of these seatbacks with a slimmer unit along with new slimmer armrests (with the telephone mounted on the side) and new IFE underseat mounts. Engineering is currently working on the problem and the modifications should begin shortly. Hopefully, all of the planes will be modified within a year.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

Yes I agree, the A340 is free of these double-excuse-me problems. It is the best seating arrangement...........
well, maybe not, the first class seating on 747s on airlines such as BA, SQ, CX, QF is the best- all aisle seats, no excuse-me-s at all.

Has the president of Delta (sorry, don't know his name) self tried to sit in the middle of 5 seats?
If he hasn't, I would like too see how he reacts.

Actually, Cathay Pacific conducted a survey when they deceided on their first 777
by simulating and calculating how many pax will get a prisoner seat at diffrent seat load factors. They did actually found out that the 2-5-2- configuration was the best it is only beaten by others when having full coach load.

BA actually has a few 777s with a 3-4-3 config. I flew one LGW-ANU a few months back. The plane had 383 seats altogether, and that includes the few Club World seats they had,

But later CX switched to 333 seating arrangement on the 777-300.

United's coach seats are about as comfortable as a brick and as roomy as shopping cart.

Delta's seats arent that bad!

2-5-2- is good unless you are in the middle of the 5. usually the airline puts family with kids in the center and the kids are so small they dont care.

Let's take the NW DC10 for an example:

2-5-2 in 23 rows of the main cabin
5 rows are 2-4-2

its takes over a 90% load factor before ANYONE has to be in the center seat

Not all of Delta's seats are bad... the Biz Elite seats are the best in the business.

I beg to differ... the BusinessFirst product is the best biz product in the industry, hands down, bar none, that's it. The 767 is where it is really evident. Continental offers a 2-1-2 arrangement, maximizing space and comfort. Delta has it 2-2-2, which compromises the size of the seat.

2.5 inches is a lot, especially over a long transatlantic flight. No doubt, my choice will always be BusinessFirst

I do really detest the 5 across seating. It seems to be an American (the country not the airline) thing which started with the old DC-10-10's then caught on with the L-1011's. It just seems stupid to cram all those people in the center. It is also ugly, frightening and overwhelming visually and psychologically. Especially for claustophobics.
I also feel (not proven but just my own opinion) that it is more difficult to evacuate from a 5 seat center than a 4 seat center. I recall the survivors of the United
DC-10 Sioux City crash landing complained about the tightness of the rows, which I must assume was a reference to the center 5 seat consoles.
In any case, it would seem to me to be just as easy to create a 3-4-2 configuration, which, if you all recall, was the original Y class configuration Boeing suggested and offered on the B747 when it was introduced as a "luxury Jetliner".
Why do they still use 5 abreast seating???
Ciao.

It will be 3-4-3 in the near future. I read about it awhile back. They will also have "thinner" materials used on the seats for more leg room (I think).

How About AA's Seats?

Mon Oct 30, 2000 1:40 pm

How do you all feel about AA's coach/business/first seats? they are the "new generation" seats --- somewhat similar to Delta's seats. Are AA's better tahn Deltas? I have not heard much about AA's seats.

What do u think?

I dont find DL seats uncomfortable. I have only experienced the old seats (the ones without adjustable headrests) on the MD-88, 727-200, 767 & 757. All of them were very comfortable except for the 727 which was alittle cramped.

I love the posters that say, "I hate the center seat in the row of five... I was stuck xx hours in that middle seat..." Stuck? What? Was there a bear trap that you happend to step in while crossing the row? NO? Maybe the airline handcuffed you to the seat. "Now sir, don't you try to get out of this seat, you are now 'stuck' here for the remaining xx hours!"

OK, in all my flights on the DL's L1011s I was never "Stuck" in the middle, I always requested another seat. So, to all of you who claim that you have been "stuck" in that middle seat, what circumstances "stuck" you there? Hopefully it wasn't the bear trap.

I requested Delta's reservation department for a seat assignment 10 days before the departure of my flight and they told me that they couldn't assign seats for that flight because it was a codeshared flight and they didn't have access to the seat screen, so I had to get my seat in the airport. I got to the airport three hours in advance (to try to get a good seat) and guess which seats were available, only the center ones of an MD11. The lady in the counter told me that only center seats were given by the other airline to Delta for the Codeshared flight. So I spent 8 hours in that center seat with a fat guy next to me taking some of my vital space.

That's how I got stuck in that center seat after paying a lot of money for my ticket to Delta.

Well, you were very unlucky, because if you knew the percentage of people that don't show up for their flight (in other words, you could have had their seat) you would know just how UNLUCKY you are.

Fanoftristars:

I did that trip on August and the flight was oversold. At least I could make the journey.
The good thing happend on my return trip, I didn't have a seat assignment for that flight also, and it was oversold. I waited until the departure time and how lucky I was that I couldn't get a seat. Delta booked 5 other passengers on SN and my brother and I on KL (Free travel voucher).
We went to KL counter and they didn't want to accept the coupons issued by delta, so we had to go back to DL counter to clear things up. After having a little chat with DL manager he talked to KL manager and he agreed to accept the coupons, but the only problem was that tourist class was full, so we ended in World Bussines Class.
My big problem is that I fly on pick seasons and days, so flights are always full and sometimes oversold.
