Interesting, is the 'seasonal' aspect just to test out the route, with the prospect of it being a daily year round service?

Or is there a point of it being a late winter/early spring only route because of the slack in the system due to lower winter demand?

Spring/Winter Break at South Padre Island.

I think it its interesting that they didn't do ATL or DTW as well, but maybe those are still to come.

This route showed up in this week's OAG thread. There was some minor speculation that DL is going head-to-head with SY out of MSP for some reason. Not only did they add this route, but they increased frequency to PHX and extended many of the seasonal routes in the spring where SY also flies.

Well, also NK is launching a few seasonal routes to sun destinations out of Minneapolis this winter as well, so its not just an SY-blitz.

Lots of snowbirds in south Texas. This route could do well in season.

Is HRL cheaper than Brownsville Airport? McAllen is too far west I presume.

DL is trying to squash SY, NW style. NW has butted heads with SY in MSP for years, and SY has survived, many twin cities residents would fly SY for the lower fares and find it a decent experience.

SY even used to run a flight MSP-SEA-PDX some summers ago. DL has been focusing on their other hubs until now, it's just a bit of ill spirited activity on DLs part, that's all.
Next Flights: PDX-HNL-OGG-LIH-PDX On AS, WP & HA

MFE is too far west, maybe BRO has a negative connotation, inly UAex flies to BRO.

BRO has a tiny terminal (it really looks and feels more like a general aviation FBO than an airport), and lacks the amenities present at HRL (number of rental car companies, gate space, terminal space, etc). It is a somewhat shorter drive from BRO to S. Padre Island, but not enough to make a huge difference. Also, for people headed to places like Port Mansfield for sportfishing or birdwatching, HRL is closer. Although it is still in the planning stages, HRL will also be more convenient once the second causeway to the Island (running further North) gets built.

Sun Country is upset about Delta. SX had route MSP-HRL for many years. I remembered that Sun Country used to fly MSP-HRL on a DC-10!!!!

That is probably more in response to NK recently adding MSP-PHX than SY, who's has been flying it for years.

Actually, DL and SY seem to peacefully co-exist in MSP. DL even does the ground handling for SY's MSP flights in PHX.

SY has flights more then once a week to HRL. SY is not worried about DL or even NK. SY is growing, 4 more 737 coming in the next few months. These are not even Transavia jets.

DL's flight to HRL is daily.

SY would be foolish not to worry about the other carriers. SY has mainly been expanding in traditional DL business markets such as MSP - WAS/NYC/BOS/CHI/LAX/SFO. I fear they may have awakened the sleeping giant and make themselves a target. I believe that this difference in strategy is why the last CEO, Gadek, left SY.

HRL is a completely new destination for DL. I'd say that's newsworthy.

WN has the following routes:

HRL-SAT
HRL-AUS
HRL-HOU
HRL-DAL

It's tough to say, although there could be some truth to what some of the other posters are saying. Perhaps it was not SY that sparked the ire of DL, but perhaps DL is heading off an NK invasion and SY is going to get caught in the crossfire.
