Delta Delays Second ATL-GRU To March

Thu Sep 12, 2013 4:04 am

Delta was awarded seven weekly frequencies in order to double its daily frequency on the ATL-GRU route. The proposed start date was originally set for December 15th, 2013.

Yesterday (09/11), Delta submitted a HOTRAN (hours of transportation) application before the Brazilian ANAC that sets the start date for a new ATL-GRU on March 1st, 2014.

HOTRAN applications are not slot applications. It's bureaucratic procedure unique to Brazil that involves everything related to aviation infrastructure, including navigation. Slot allocations come before HOTRAN applications.

Proposed schedule:

DL58 763 daily GRU 0025 ATL 0815
DL59 763 daily ATL 2215 GRU 0950+1

Isn't the busy travel season about to start for travel between the US and Brazil? I would think that DL would need that second flight especially during the months of DEC, JAN, FEB, and MAR. Why are they delaying the second nonstop to March because by the time April rolls around demand start to drop somewhat?

Personally I prefer to think of the route as MCO-GRU with an intermediate stop in ATL to pick up a few extra passengers

If MCO was taken out of the equation i'm not sure any Brazil routes would work long-term for Delta.

Keep in mind that next summer 2014 Brazil is hosting the 2014 FIFA Men's World Cup. Probably that is the reason why Delta is delaying the second proposed flight.

The realities of Brazil economic slowdown and currency issues likely are the cause.

The boom times look to be over, and airlines will suffer along with everyone else.

I am no expert in economics, but the Real is weak yet the prices (inflation) are high, virtually canceling out any real shopping deals. I bet there are enough current seats to/from Brazil (experts would know). I think this is why United was so hot about an EWR-GIG non-stop a year ago, now they aren't.

Domestic flying in Brazil is crazy expensive.

For the foreseeable future I think everyone is proceeding with caution when it comes to Brazil, but at a projected 2.5 growth... It's growth many countries would want!
The world is missing love, let's use our flights to spread it!

UA is a little reluctant about Brazil and South America. They can do it, anytime, and they will have to decide what to do when US returns 7 unrestricted frequencies. IAH-GIG is not enough mostly days and a lot of people have to fly with other airlines.

That will be a month , but to be honest, heavy demand happens during the previous two weeks and the first two weeks of the World Cup. I see that DL in fact may consider this new flight can reduce their yields during the premium IATA winter season to Brazil (in fact DEC and JAN are good ones, FEB is terrible with few days of strong demand)
This year, for example, mostly flights reach around 60-75% load factor in February.
New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !
