AF Just Received Its 9th A380

Sat Sep 14, 2013 10:50 am

The 9th A380 (F-HPJI) landed yesterday afternoon (Fri.13th) in CDG from Hamburg around 4PM

http://www.lefigaro.fr/flash-eco/201...-air-france-recoit-son-9e-a380.php

(Sorry article in French)

The article says the 10th one should be delivered in 2014

The airline was to receive the 2 last A380s by April 2014 but owing to the econonmical situation, deliveries will be delayed with no further notice

As a reminder, the routes currently served by the AF A380s from CDG are : JFK, IAD, LAX, JNB, NRT & PVG

Congrats to AF on another A380 delivery!

I wonder if Air France has a new A380 destination in mind??

Given that they appear to have indefinitely deferred the final 2 frames from their current order of 12, I think it's probably unlikely that they will be ordering any more in the very near future.

Are there any plans to fly again in SFO?
I am flying to San Francisco on November and as an A380 fun I booked a flight via LAX instead of flying
direct with the noisy 777.

Very unlikely. 12 A380 will be more than enough for AF.

I'm curious about A380 service to JFK. They have such a mix of aircraft to JFK (A330-200, 777-300, 777-200, A380, sometimes even A340). Is the A380 assigned to the 1410 departure because that is the most popular hour for them? Is there a big variation in demand by hour departure?

This is the reason. When you see variations like this, it tells you which flights have higher demand than others. Some airlines up and downgauge a/c multiple times a week on a particular flight depending on the demand.

I asked this question a while back, and IIRC the answer at the time was essentially that the summer to SFO was a test to see how it would work since they couldn't justify running it to NRT after the earthquake, and the test wasn't all that successful. It'd be nice to see a second A380 to SFO (or at least bring back the summer 747; getting sick of all these 777's!!), and maybe something has changed or will change, but I wouldn't expect it...

Too many premium class seats for the Montreal market. 80 J and 9 F seats are far too many. AF's high-density 77Ws are much more appropriate in that market where you're competing with carriers with equally high-density aircraft (Corsair, Air Transat, and AC's new high-density 10-abreast 77Ws).

I would assume an AF A380 would be sent to terminal 2 at MEX, as terminal one would be horrible to handle the arivals of the IB A346, LH 748, BA 744 and a AF A380. The customes lines in MEX terminal 1 are horrible. Not to mention that taxi-ways would need to be widened, and a gate with two story jet ways. If it doesn't happen now, it will happen in the future. I sure hope MEX is the first A380 destination in Latin American but as of now it's looking more like GRU. Darn brazilians

An interesting topic, but there is an A380 production thread where this information could be posted.
Is it necessary to start a new thread each time a carrier receives an A380?
I mean, there'd be 30+ separate "EK gets a new A380 delivery" threads...

There is no doubt that the 777 is a superb plane but when you have to fly for 12 hours, well for ME, noise is a big factor.

I think I'm in the minority on this board, but I find it easier to get info when threads are more specific, than to see one gigantic thread on a general subject where you have to go through dozens or hundreds of posts on different sub-subjects before finding (or, in my case, not finding) the info you were looking for. In that context, I welcome this thread.

On many, probably most, modern airliners most of the perceived noise in the cabin is from aerodynamic sources, not from the engines.

I would not be to sure about that, according to this article, Both LH and AF have expressed desire to look into staring A380 operations at MEX. http://mexdfmagazine.com/2013/02/22/a-new-airport-for-mexico-city/ This article also highlights that a lot needs to be done in MEX for it to be able to receive the A380. Also, due to MEX's high altitude, (7,343'/2,238 m) a quad jet has better performance than a twin. Once AF retires their last 744, this route will most likely go to 77W until MEX is able to receive the A380.

Definitely! All airlines are upgaugeing GIG/GRU routes or staring new ones, I.e, LAX-GRU (AA). Hopefully we will see MEX-GIG! More and more Mexicans are visiting Brazil and vice versa due the visa restrictions being lifted.

Initially, MEX was supposed to be among of the first AF A380 destinations ... But it seems AF changed its mind because of safety concerns on the ground and taxiing areas. The intense vehicule traffic and their speed on the apron at MEX seemed to be risky ... This was at the time of the AF A380 incident with a CRJ at JFK.
Since then, MEX was dropped by AF as a potential A380 destination. (That's what I heard from AF A380 Pilots themselves ...).

Interesting FlySSC. Thanks for the info. I would say it is not only that. AF sends currently a 2-class 744 to MEX, which suggests that for them, unlike BA and LH, demand for F-class is very limited or even non-existing. The AF A380s have a large number of premium seats, including F seats, so even if it were technically feasible for MEX to receive the A380, it would not make commercial sense for AF to send one to MEX. Very few 744s will remain on the AF fleet for the next few years and MEX will remain one of the very few 744 routes. When they are finally retired, I would expect to see AF send 77Ws or, who knows, maybe another single decker twin, perhaps more than 7x weekly.

Yes, you could probably make an aircraft cabin nearly silent with existing technologies. But would you really want to? Last time I flew on an AF A380 I was woken up by the person snoring two rows in front of me, not to mention every chime of the seatbelt sign, etc. I believe EK discovered something similar with the A380 crew rest area. When you're sharing a small space with several hundred other people, a certain amount of white noise is a good thing!

This is a very interesting question, and I believe EddieDude answered the best.
I too see AF sending either a 3 class (JWY) 77W over anything else. Yes. There will be a capacity decrease, but then again, AF could send a 3 class 77E daily and fly a 77W either daily or 3-4 weekly.
Since MEX is not equipped for the A380, I don't see anyone rushing to ask to have the airport upgraded. Won't it have lots of performance problems too.
Further, I don't see AF ever needing to send a 4 class a/c to MEX. Their SkyTeam Partner, AM, only has Business too.
It will be wonderful for those of you who fly MEX-CDG when AM upgauges the service from a 762 to a 788. You all deserve an updated, nice product on this route.

"P" Class or not won't soon be an indication for what type of aircraft can or can not be used to a destination : starting 2014, with the introduction of the new seats in J and P, the First Class "La Première" will be available ONLY on some B77W (new seats) and on the A380 ("old" seats). No more P on the B772ER. And on the B77W, the capacity will be reduced from 8 currently to only 4 suites.
Concerning the modification of the P Class on the A380, the decision is not taken yet. It could also be reduced or/and moved to the upper deck. It is even on study that it could also be simply removed on part of the fleet...

Concerning MEX, it is historically an important and profitable market for AF and the cooperation with AeroMexico within SkyTeam is doing quite well, so ....

This delivery is effectively, at least for the foreseeable future, the last delivery of A380's to Air France. That can warrant its own thread.

MSN117/AF's 10th was convoyed on convoy 24/2013 last week, so will be delivered in 2014

21 77w are currently in a P/J/W/Y config. 19 77W will be retrofitted with new P/J seats and the 2 other ones would be retrofitted in "COI" (C/S/M) configuration (14 "COI" 77W in the future).

Actually, this is no more called "COI" configuration as this version is now used on many other routes than the "COI" network ... (BKK, MCO, CUN ...). Moreover, the former "Alizée" class is now replaced by the standard "Premium Economy".

So, we have 3 different cabin config possible for the B77W :

8P / 67J / 28W / 200Y - 42J / 24W / 317 Y - 14J / 32W / 422Y

I do agree with you. But the trouble is, that, even for these international destinations such as BKK, the service in Y is the same as for COI destinations ..... that's not clear for AF customers...

I've been told that the new configuration for 772 would be 0P / 16J / 24W / 252Y: is that true ? seemingly less and less premium seats......

Damn, Thought I got away Scott free without anyone seeing that. I realized after I got up the next morning that this was the 9th not 10th, so my post was useless... But it was too late to edit it out.

I too see AF sending either a 3 class (JWY) 77W over anything else. Yes. There will be a capacity decrease, but then again, AF could send a 3 class 77E daily and fly a 77W either daily or 3-4 weekly.

At times AF flew a combo of 77Es and A343s to MEX more than 7x weekly, so this would not be a surprise.

Quoting laca773 (Reply 38):
I don't see AF ever needing to send a 4 class a/c to MEX. Their SkyTeam Partner, AM, only has Business too.

It seems BA and LH can fill their F-class seats ex/into-MEX, but amybe it is not necessary for AF to offer F.

How many A380 options do they have?

Guess HKG will be a future A380 destination?

It's not "Y" class, it is sold as "M", which is a sort of discount economy.
I agree it can be confusing ...
