These appear to be weather diversions waiting for DEN
. Not an actual termination of a flight at a alternative airport.
has leveled the playing field against diversions to alternate airports due to weather; diversions still occur.
It's amazing the way a mountain range can change weather pattern(s) perhaps this is why DEN
is built where it was when compared to the Stapleton airport which is closer to the front range.
In Southeast Alaska AS
flight(s) destined for JNU (Juneau) will historically give it three attempts to land from both ends of the runway before flying over to Sitka; a 25 minute flight to wait it out. On a handful of occasions AS
returned us to SEA
which makes for a lot of flying; What we coined as the trip to nowhere.
On at least two flights we were on our way over to Sitka ATC turned us around back for JNU because a short window of opportunity opened which is traced back to how mountains can change weather.
Man can be taken from Alaska. Alaska can never be taken from the man.
