Amazing Swissair Boeing 747 Video

Thu Sep 26, 2013 10:29 pm

I found a wonderful video (30 minutes) the other day. It follows Captain Caro Stemmler's last flight before retiring, from ZRH to JFK on Swissair's classic Boeing 747-300 HB-IGE (Geneva) in December 1997.

What makes the film so special is the uniquely Swiss atmosphere. Instead of having a narrator, the film calmly follows the event from various angles with some amazing portrait shots of the people involved, beautifully backed by a classy song that for some reason you don't really get tired of, even though it plays for most of the half hour. The lack of a narrator takes away the language barrier or the need for a tacky subtitle, with just the right amount of Swiss German talk for that authentic touch. Lots of beautiful air-to-air footage too.

You'll notice how the film feels so uniquely Swiss, so 90s, so calm, professional and stylish.

Some rare, memorable cameos by HB-IWF at 6:13 (crashed after a cockpit fire just months later) and the World Trade Center at 28:50.

If you have half an hour to spare, watch it and enjoy it. It's probably the best and most rewarding thing you can do with your 30 minutes of time. I promise.

I stumbled upon this video a few months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very classy indeed, makes me miss Swissair even more. Love Swiss German too.

I enjoyed it. It is a real pleasure to watch it, even if you don't understand German. The footage of Manhattan at the end was superb! The music was so soft.

And you can spot also, if you pay attention carefully, a Delta 767 in the old Widget livery.

I used to fly these beautiful birds annually from 90-97, but I was too young to remember much. I remember the airport in Zurich was my favorite place in the world and still is probably. Does anyone know what regs used to fly to JFK for the 743?

Wow this video brings back memories of Crossair in Zurich along with the old delta liveries. How time flies.

Thanks Sören! Love the scene at 07:01 where he walks the ramp totally humbled, glancing at the B743 and being dwarfed by the engine!

When the 744 was being launched there were articles about Swissair 744 coming but sadly those were never ordered. The Swissair 743 were the most elegant 747.

Fantastic video! And I love how the whole cabin crew was properly briefed about the flight by Captain Stemmler. I lived in Switzerland for a year... and this brought back great memories.

Swissair was the launch customer for the 743. I remember flying on one very soon after they went into service. It was operating YYZ-YMX (Montreal Mirabel)-ZRH. At that time there was only F and Y class, no J which was introduced fairly soon after. The 743s originally had 69 Y class seats on the upper deck.

Back in 1988 and 1993 I flew with them in Y on the upper deck. That was cool to be up there.

Most surprising is the bit around 02:05 with a member of the crew smoking in the meeting room. Oh how times have changed.

Brings back wonderful memories hearing the route being discussed in the film; 'Manchester - Isle of Man - Belfast'. Albeit their plotting chart shows a more southerly route to the south of Ireland, cannot quite figure that one out!

I spent my teenage years when I should have been doing my school homework, watching/listening to the transatlantic overflights crossing just south of Belfast (the BEL VOR was in a different location than it is now). Many times I heard/saw Swissair flight 100 taking this route gracing Northern Ireland skies, and many times it was HB-IGE.

I noticed the captain was the pilot not flying on this leg. Would he not fly JFK-ZRH the next day? It seems strange to have a Swissair captain retire on ZRH-JFK and also not be flying his last flight.

I have a possible explanation:
In Europe, you retire at a certain age. This is not the USA where you have 90yo cabin attendants and 80yo pilots. So if you happen to reach that age while on layover in New York then you're done. This means Swissair would have ferried in a captain for the return segment, which seems like a hassle but then again the retiring captain probably made it clear that it's his wish and lifelong dream to fly to JFK as his last flight, so this might have been Swissair's farewell present.

Just my wild guess, but it kind of makes sense!

Mandatory retirement age for Part 121 pilots in the USA was 60 years old when this video was made. In fact, it was changed to 65 in large part because of ICAO's age limit of 65. It did not make sense to limit US pilots to 60 while foreign pilots were allowed to fly in US airspace at 64.

I agree on the cabin attendants tho!
