Vanilla Air Launch

Mon Sep 30, 2013 9:29 am

Following the previous thread, Vanilla Air has been launched in Japan. I'm not sure what the airline code will be.
Air Asia Japan To Rename As Vanilla Air (by ktachiya Aug 19 2013 in Civil Aviation)?threadid=5849452&searchid=5856193&s=vanilla+Air#ID5856193

They're thinking of of flying in the future from Japan to GUM, HNL but will not fly FUK/PUS, perhaps a lucrative route given that Fukuoka is a sister city of Busan and that KE and Air Busan (BX) fly that route twice a day each.

Uniforms are a light blue colour. At the launch, there was a male and female staff member - does this mean that Vanilla Air will have male flight attendants? Besides Starflyer (7G), the main carriers ANA and JAL do not employ male attendants on domestic routes. Why is this so? A friend of mine felt discriminated against for not being able to do this job, which is an extremely rare situation in male-dominated Japan!

Competition must be a good thing... No?

FUK - PUS is only done twice a day by KE 739's, if it was that lucrative there would be many more flights. Even OZ don't seem to operate this route now. It's also a very short flight, only 133 miles, and there's a ferry service too.

True - that takes about three hours, subject more to rough weather than by air and with comparatively few passengers.

Fukuoka population approx 1 million and Busan about 4 million.

Initially Vanilla Air will from December fly to 4 destinations: Seoul, Taipei, Okinawa and Sapporo.

Air Busan also flies twice daily on FUK-PUS.
Until they start flying to FUK or PUS, I doubt they will start FUK-PUS.

Also, NRT-HNL is out of reach for A320.
I am kind of surprised GUM wasn't announced for this winter, but surely will start sometime in 2014 along with possibly SPN.

I'm surprised no one flys NRT - BKI any more since MH dropped this route.
I would have thought Borneo would be a great destination for the Japanese winter sun seekers and at around 2500 miles certainly doable with A320's or B738's.

Do able with A320s/737NGs - Yes.
However, all the new LCCs have pretty much stated 4 hours as being the max. endurance.
MH probably has much better cost base than any of the Japanese LCCs, so if it doesn't work with MH, I would doubt any of them would dive into such a long-haul LCC route when there are plenty of much shorter int'l routes like GUM, SPN, & CEB that cries for LCC entrance.

Being based initially out of NRT, I would think Tokyo news stations had it covered.
Palau is certainly within range of NRT, border line duration though.

UAL has an NRT-GUM flight (UAL196/197) that's operated by a 73H, but every other flight is a 752 or larger.

Would Vanilla Air get A330s like their Malaysian and Thai counterparts to fly NRT-GUM and NRT-HNL runs?

MAS is relaunching this route, due to start from 28th Oct 2013 with 3 flights a week. BKI - KIX will be suspended.

MH080 BKI0725 – 1400NRT 738 146
MH081 NRT1455 – 2005BKI 738 146

It is supposed to but it is not, which is why they have been flushing billions of Ringgit of Malaysia taxpayers money down the toilet since 1997.

I don't think UA operates 757s out of NRT. I thought it was just sCO 737s and 777s to the islands.

Dang I must have missed it.

Currently, no, but good-ole CO did for a short time around 2000.
It was really short period between the retirement of the 727s until mainland CO had enough 738s for Air Mike. However, NRT-GUM was mostly on DC-10s though.

I forgot about that. Thanks.

Probably no, since Vanilla Air will have nothing to do with AirAsia plus most carriers in the world do not purchase or lease aircraft with just one route in mind. NRT-GUM is doable with A320s. GUM is not slot restricted so they could run four daily A320s if they want to run JL/DL/UA out of town.
