Your Longest Nonstop Without Entertainment

Tue Oct 31, 2000 12:47 pm

My longest nonstop flight without audio/video entertainment was back in 1993, when I flew Continental Airlines from New York/LGA to Houston/IAH. Flying time was four hours. Aircraft= MD80. Next month, I will be on an AA MD80 on the Dallas/Ft.Worth to Boston route, roughly 3.5 hours. That should be interesting.

My longest would either have to be IAD-IAH or ABQ-SEA. Both of them a bit more than 3 hours.

I still think about this sometimes when I fly. Mine was aboard an eight-hour UTA French Airlines flight from LAX to Papeete, Tahiti in 1982 after graduating High school. It was a DC10-30, the inflight mag mentioned movies and audio controls on the seat, there was a screen, but we had absolutely nothing. No movie, no audio. It was a night flight though, maybe that was it, but otherwise I could not understand why, nor did I ask since I was non revving on an interline pass. This was a very good airline, and there definately was service with 2 meals, but the only entertainment was watching the light on the wing light up the cloudy night sky.

Depends on how you define entertainment.   I flew on one of Aeroflot's 767-300ERs last summer on ORD-SVO-ORD, and good ole EI-CKD's IFE was completely down. That's 10.5 hours one way, 11.5 hours the other way, all with no headphones or movies. However, I had some awesome conversations which made the flight go more quickly than most dumb movies they could show.

The longest for me was AC from YYZ to POS in 1979 but then most airliners did not offer IFE. Of recent time the longest, though not nonstop, was BWIA MD83 in 1989 from POS to MIA via GND, UVF and ANU (Trinidad to Miami via Grenada, St. Lucia and Antigua), all told taking 6 hours.

For me, it would be a EWR - MEX on a A320. 5 1/2 hours without any kind on entertainment. But a very good flight though.

LAX-ORD on AA 757.
Didn't want to pay for the headsets! Good thing UA now offers free headsets on domestic flights!

Regularly do 14 hour flights with no inflight entertainment, I much prefer to sleep or read a good book.

Trvlr: AA never had, never will, have IFE on all their 280 somewhat MD-80s. Poor souls who get stuck on a little more than 1/3 of AA's fleet =( The MD-80s, however, do have AA's new ultra stylish and pretty comfortable seats.

My longest flight without entertainment:
TSR (Timisoara, Romania)-AMS-ORD 11+ hr
on Tarom Romanian B707 in 1992.

I guess this one beats the most...

It was also my first transatlantic flight, actually my first flight over 1hr in length.

Northwest shows entertainment on aircraft that have IFE systems when the flight is 3+ hours.

The 757s and DC10s all have IFE

Some A320s do (mostly the older ones) and they will use it if they have it.

The A319s do not have IFE (but they are mostly used for short hops)

The DC9s don't, but is there any surprise there?

NW A320 MIA-MSP 4.5 hours
NW B757 MSP-MIA 4.0 hours

The NW 757 did have TV monitors but those were only used for the safety announcments and for some 3 minute long ad about 5 minutes after takeoff. Otherwise we looked at a blank TV screen for the rest of the flight. When asked about why there was no entertainment, a NW flight attendent said 'people steal the headphones so Northwest deciced not to give them out anymore.' (This is for domestic, Canada, Mexico, and Caribbean flights only I think.)

My longest single flight without IFE was aboard a Rich International charter flight from LGW to JFK (8+ hours). Service on that flight was, likewise, nonexistent.

The longest time spent on a single airplane without IFE was on an Air India 707-437 from Bombay to New York, with stops in Beirut, Prague, and Paris, back in 1967. Beautiful plane though.

AA- ORD-SJC earlier this year - 4.5 hours of sheer, unadulterated misery on a packed MD-82 w/no IFE. To boot, the plane had not been "reconfigured" w/the new seating arrangements yet :-( Definitely one of my worst aviation experiences, as I could barely read my book because my "neighbor"'s stomach overlapped well into my seat.....ugggghhhh.

It was in a flight with IBERIA between Madrid and Caracas... DC10-30... any inflight entretaiment!!!! (for 8.5 hours).

Inside the USA it was in a AA flight between Miami & Washington Reagan airport some time ago in a B727-200... the only "entretaiment" was the rude people whom were supposed to attend us in the plane.

BA215, LHR-BOS, although there was a movie, I didn't feel like watching it!

Delta Express BOS-RSW, just over three hours, no entertainment whatsoever!

UA 777 from IAD to DEN (approx. 4 hrs) last summer. PTVs decided to go permanently blank about 15 min into the flight. Channel 9 audio was great though!!

I usually bring my own IFE onboard in the form of a Gameboy, CD player, and/or a book or two. I refuse to pay $5 unless the movie's *really* good (on domestic flights it usually isn't   ). Kudos to UA for providing free headsets.

RNO-STL on a TWA MD-8X(not sure what series, I was 12, it was painted in old colors though)

ORD-ANC on UA in '91, too young to remember much.

MSP-ANC on a NW 757 that was about 5 hours.

ANC-HNL on a Hawaiian DC-8. That went about 6-6.5 hours.

Are Northwest and Sothwest the only two major US carriers, who have decided not to install inflight audio/video systems in their NEW narrowbody planes ?

Well, Southwest is excused, as they are no-frill, low-fare carrier. But NW ? For them, IFE is a low priority. Wait and see when all other carriers have IFE in their planes. NW will suffer.

I flew Guadeloupe-Paris in 1992 in 747-200; the plane was packed with 510 people(!). The airline was CorsAir, flight time 10 hours; no entertainment.

I deployed from Offutt AFB, Omaha, Nebraska direct to Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean on a C-5. We had 3 aerial refuelings enroute and our flying time was approximately 20 hours. No movies. No hot meals. Just a bunch of Air Force guys playing cards and sleeping....

Actually, my longest flight without a movie was EWR-SFO on a CO 757-200, the flip down monitors were "malfunctioning" (actually they were freaking out, they kept folding up and down) so I only had the music which repeats itself every hour or so. I would say I dealt with no entertainment for about 5 hours or a 6 hour flight.
